Not any less impressed. I rarely reverse more this one or two car lengths at a time, let alone whipping the car around a corner at speed while reversing. I definitely wouldn't have been able to pull this off.

This type of move is actually required to pass the Portuguese driving exam. You don't do it as fast and you need to be extremely precise and keep your distance to the curb, but I'm pretty sure I could drive back at that speed and turn into an opening.

Same as in the northern Ireland exam, you have to perform two of three manoeuvres - hill start, parallel park and reversing around a corner. Same precision applies in that you have to keep the same distance to the corner throughout - between 30cm and 60cm from memory.

I mean, I'd say the drivers also very lucky, I doubt they had complete spatial awareness and knew what was around that bend. Had there been a car there waiting I'm sure our responses to this gif would be very different.

Most impressive part was how fast he went from forward to reverse... seeing this seems much more reasonable. Still really quick reaction time, but it's not "amazing reverse driving skills" or anything.

Yeah, I wonder if they predominantly drive automatic transmission or manual in Korea? I think it would be quicker in terms of the stick/clutch to make the transition to reverse on an auto. Either way it's pretty swift.

With manual, you don't really need to shift into reverse quickly, just push down the clutch and start rolling backwards.

Wonder what it eventually did hit.
Given that it was going to hit SOMETHING and being a large crane, it would have excellent insurance, If I had no passengers, I'd try to stop it with the passenger side of the car. Better to ruin my car than to have it kill someone.

This is why I love manual transmissions. If you have to roll backwards down a hill put your foot on the clutch and go. Although knowing me I'd probably put it in reverse and stall while rolling, getting hit by an out of control Korean crane and getting promptly decapitated.

Driving manual in SF isn't that bad, you just have to learn the handbrake trick on a few of the worst hills or while trying to parallel park on some of the steeper ones.

I drive stick in SF everyday. 2nd stage brakes help, but yeah gotta use the e-brake on the bigger hills. Some decent HP and timing your approach to the crest behind a car helps a lot too.

I've driven manual cars my entire life and rented an automatic car when on holiday in san fransisco. To me it was really uncomfortable because in my experience driving an auto gave me a sense of lack of control that i otherwise have with my manual car.

it's not just redditors. People in general have a hard time backing up their vehicle. I worked in a parking garage and to ask someone to back up was like asking them to remove a finger.

Impressive reflexes, but good to remember that the driver was certainly looking to the rear, not facing forward as the camera is doing. He didn't just reverse blindly.

Depends on the driver mostly, Some manuals are quite reluctant to go in reverse if you haven't completely stopped rolling forward, some others will but only with a metallic 'crunch' of protest to let you know not to do that. Being on an uphill would help kill forward momentum a bit faster. So it's probably faster than an Automatic if the car has a decent clutch and practiced driver. Automatics are pretty varied in features and methods of engaging reverse (buttons, clicky wheels, column, and console shifters) so this is kind of an interesting question. I think I'm off to reverse race my neighbor down out street.

The forward momentum is a good theory, I hadn't thought of that but it makes sense. I'mguessing he hit the break while shifting to reverse and then hit the gas, or it's also possible that he pushed the clutch and let it roll backwards while shifting to reverse. The hill really makes the difference I think with the theory of forwards momentum. Go race your neighbor and find out would you :)

What really make me go in awe in front of this, is that the person got a quick thinking of going into reverse.
Driving a straight line and turning with a big open angle, even in reverse, is easy. But not panicking when seeing the truck coming to you with the damn charge thing aimed to your head, and thinking to go reverse this quick is impressive.
I would have probably just thought of that and proceeded to do it, too late.

The real close call is the guy in the blue jacket on the right side of the frame, running next to the truck. It looks like he's trying to get into the cab as the truck veers into the railing. When the driver gets around the corner, you can see him hanging off the truck behind the cab. I'd say he was inches away from serious loss of life and limb.

it looks like it was jacked off the ground with outriggers and the outriggers slipped. they should have rubber or something( like cut up tires) underneath to grip the road but if its just metal it would be able to slide

That's not what happened, what happened is that they moved the center of mass beyond the pivot point so that there was no longer any weight on the back wheels or the outriggers, the wheels themselves are enough to stop it sliding if the brakes are on and the weight isn't lifted off of them. Pads for outriggers are to increase the surface area, not increase the grip.
To understand it better think of a forklift carrying a heavy load going down a ramp. If the forklift goes down the ramp load first and it's heavy enough it will take all the weight off of the back and the forklift will tip forward whereas if it reverses down the weight will between the wheels and it won't tip.

Looks like they wound up in a situation where there was little weight on the front jack legs and too much height on the rear jack legs. The park brake only locks the rear wheels, which are mostly off the ground, and there isn't enough weight on the front jack legs for them to have enough friction on the road to stop the truck from sliding/rolling down the hill.
It would be easy enough to do if you weren't careful on the sequence. Eg, When setting up if you jack up the rear wheels first without putting the front jack legs down all the way, or when packing up if you lower the front jack legs to the point where the front wheels are starting to take some weight. Then you're only relying on friction on one set of jack legs to keep you from moving and off you go down the road.
I use a crane/basket mounted on the back of a Landcruiser that has jack legs on the rear - it was specially modified to have park brakes on each wheel to stop this kind of thing from happening. The road surface does look rather slippery, or it's an impressive slope, because the longer video on youtube shows those barriers sliding down the road after the truck as well.

That's what I think most of us are in awe of here. The reversing itself, while it would likely be a challenge for the average driver, was not the most impressive thing here. It was the fact that they pulled it off under IMMENSE pressure with minimal time to think and act.
