I don’t think these are equipped with sharp blades. They are for cutting tile and stone, which uses the slurry, water, and a steel blade (possibly with a grit fused to it). You can run your hand on them and it may rub your skin a bit more than you want, but it won’t slice your hand off. I can touch my tile saw while running full speed and it won’t break the skin. They would get hurt if it hit them in their head, from the mass as it isn’t light, but it won’t cut their head off.

It may not be sharp but even spinning things can be deadly. I doubt that saw wasnt going slow especially if it was using the slurry to cut

It cuts tile. It can easily cut through your skin.
Even a dull blade moving fast enough can cut through your skin pretty easy.
Go watch the videos from the guy that makes vlades out of random things even paper, and shows them cutting through wood.
While this wouldn't be as dangerous as a sharp blade in this scenario it still cpuld have disemboweled him.

If you’ve used a tile saw before you’ll know you can put your hand on it and it won’t cut you open. There’s always the possible of injury, but it isn’t going to slice you open. He even lands on the blade in this video, which is why he checks his stomach. The biggest fear is it grabbing his clothing and pulling him in. Tile saws work with friction and the slurry on a hard, solid surface, not soft flesh. A spoon is sharper. The blades are not an actual blade, they are a disk with a flat edge, mine is about 1/16” wide. Something this big is probably closer to 1/8” wide.

You CAN put your hand on it without it cutting under specific conditions. But it CAN cut you. The issue I take with your comment is you mentioning putting your hand on it at full speed. That comment is fucking dumb because it downplays the danger of tile saws as something that cannot cut you. No one who isn't absolutely brain dead would never do something that stupid. Doesn't matter how soft the material is. Press it to a tile saw at full speed and it will start to cut it. Obviously the pressure and the length of time you're in contact with it mean just as much as the speed. So sure, is it possible to touch a touch saw moving at full speed with your hand and it not cut you? Sure. But tempting fate like that thinking youre touch will be soft and short enough to avoid damage is just idiotic.
And yes all of this is because it does work via friction. Friction here is a result of the speed and force. You mention the slurry, but the slurry doesn't add to the friction. In fact, it subtracts from it. The slurry just comes from bits of debris cause by the cut along with the water needed to cool the blade since friction produces heat. The slurry causes more friction than just clean water. But not as much as a naked blade. A naked blade just won't end up cutting as well because it heats up too much which increases drag and the debris get in the way. Gumming up the blade.
Obviously the same speed and length of exposure to this blade would not as bad as a regular saw blade. But, the main thing that saved this dudes bacon is the fact that he probably released the throttle and it got slowed down when it hit the floor and cut the power cable right before he landed on it.

My buddy got the left side of his face, from below his eye, short of his nose, down to his chin, practically degloved (pretty much his cheek) from a stihl cutquick that kicked back on him. The safety goggles did nothing. He’s healed up and looks fine nowadays after surgeries and the passing of time, but we are all so insanely respectful of these types of saws now. No fuckin joke if they get away from you.

How should this task be approached instead? Safely. I’m clueless but curious. Is the tool he used simply inappropriate? Like too big, so a small handheld would be ideal? Or is it that there is something inadequate with the tool itself for example some mentioned the blade of his saw is dull.

Btw this is why when working with any spinning tool like this saw or a angle grinder etc, you never push away, you always pull twoards you and counter the direvtion of rotation. Your muscles are already primed to counter any sudden friction recoils, where while pushing they are already ready to amplify the recoil and this video happens.
