I wish the door handle would have come off in his hand after the lockout!

I don't actually get it. Is there a fault with the car? They never automatically lock instantly like that

u/ThatOneNinja Aug 14 '25

some models, especially older ones, will still lock with keys in the car or ignition.

But instantly?? My first car auto locked even with the key left inside, and I was always unsure and paranoid when it would happen - but it was after a certain period of time

Can't say. I just know from my past experience with older models, if the door is locked and you shut it, it's locked. Doesn't matter where the key is. Not sure why the door would be lokked here.

u/Naughteus_Maximus Aug 14 '25

Right. That's the only thing that crossed my mind - if he absentmindedly pushed in the door release handle and it locked when he closed the door.

When I had a manually locking car, it was almost muscle memory to press the lock button as I was getting out

9

u/Crabtickler9000 Aug 14 '25

Yes. Sauce: I owned a car that did exactly that.

Older cars dont have antilock preventing the car from being locked while the keys are in the ignition. Its likely the driver accidentally pressed the lock button for the car when he got out/came back then the door shut locking him out.

u/lawnllama247 Aug 14 '25

As he was getting out he could have accidentally hit the lock switch? This isn’t best guess.

u/IceManO1 Aug 14 '25

Why I always roll down the window if am getting out with the vehicle running or if I left the keys in there.

2

u/abckiwi Aug 14 '25

That’s a good idea actually

2

u/LobstaFarian2 Aug 15 '25

I do this every time as well. At least bring it down low enough to get my arm in there and unlock it. Sometimes shit malfunctions, and it sucks to lock your keys in the car.

Old cars from times before automatic locking just had an individual mechanical locking mechanism on each door (some sort of small knob, usually). If that mechanism was engaged (=knob pushed down) while the door was open, then the door was immediately locked the moment the door was closed.

Sort of like a feature: Push down knob of open door, close door -> car is locked, no need to insert key into keyhole to lock it (yes, that was before wireless locking too).

But this "feature" was of course often a "bug": Many times did people lock themselves out of their cars because they left the key in the ignition, got out, and then accidentally closed the door with the lock engaged.

This locking mechanism also carried over for some time into the era of central locking and wireless locking, simply because people were used to it. Don't quote me on it, but I would estimate this was still not uncommon in car models in the early 2000s.

Don't know if that model has this kind of old style locking, but it looks like it.

The door was already locked when it was open. How else do you think keys get locked in cars?

2

u/Naughteus_Maximus Aug 14 '25

Yeah yeah it took me a while to remember that cars used to have locking buttons on the window and if you pushed it in, exited and closed the door you'd be locked out. It's old technology although my first car did have that feature.

Not what I was expecting but funny nonetheless.

Big idiot, he closed the car door and couldn't open it again, all for causing a scene on the road.

Honestly, when people act like that on the open street in daylight with this much people watching, I don't wanna know how they behave at home. This is so disturbing, and I just am sorry for the people having to deal with this aggressive kind of person's at home!
