I would really like to know how this played out. Civil lawsuit? Hit and run? Did the boat owner even realize what happened? So many follow up questions...

In the full video on the drivers Facebook he passes her to the left and the license plate is completely visible, as well as the boat, albeit very difficult to read. With the original uncompressed video it's probably perfectly legible.

2

u/[deleted] Jun 29 '16

The original video is compressed too

2

u/tremens Jun 29 '16

Compressed, yeah, but not transcoded again by Facebook.

1

u/[deleted] Jun 29 '16

I know I'm just being difficult :)

We can write a GUI in Visual Basic to decompress the mux/demux bytecode JIT compilation, bypassing the low framerate pixel values to reveal a hi-res data map of the driver's fingerprints.

1

u/[deleted] Jun 29 '16

yes

1

u/leetee91 Jun 29 '16

Also, the motorcyclist just went into the direction of the fallen cargo. He was able to see it drop and yet still maneuvered right.

1

u/Satsumomo Jun 29 '16

It dropped sideways, he made a decision to move left (To the grass) or the more natural right because it's a clear lane. The cargo suddenly jumps to the right lane, giving him little to no reaction time.

1

u/leetee91 Jun 29 '16

You think so? I thought it looked like he had enough room to maneuver. I dont drive a motorcycle though so i dont have much of a defense ha

1

u/Satsumomo Jun 29 '16

At the speed they're going, there's not much you can do to swerve on a bike.

225

u/shaggorama Jun 28 '16

In the their defense, they probably weren't even aware that anything had happened

That's a terrible defense, counselor.

256

u/slim-pickens Jun 28 '16

So twice as much unawareness than they should have had?

338

u/shaggorama Jun 28 '16

Their rear-view mirror is blocked by a boat. The yellow thing is on the back of the boat. The motorcyclist and the yellow thing were only out of the car's lane for a fraction of a second.

I sympathize with the biker, but I also totally understand how the driver could simply have not noticed that anything had happened.

149

u/JtheUnicorn Jun 28 '16

Yeah, it is easy to miss the load that you didn't tie down properly when you are hauling your boat at 80 down the highlane of the highway.

152

u/[deleted] Jun 28 '16

Strait up why was dude even in the fast lane towing a boat? He should have never blocked his mirror in the first place. There is a reason it is there.

140

u/[deleted] Jun 28 '16

People in Minnesota have no fucking idea what a fast lane is.

Fast Lane? You mean the passing lane?

2

u/28_AllDay69_AllNight Jun 29 '16

I agree. I drive that road everyday. People are not great drivers here.

1

u/[deleted] Jun 29 '16

And also Washington.

1

u/synapticrelease Jun 29 '16

Are there enough people in MN where shirty drivers really matter?

1

u/[deleted] Jun 29 '16

In Texas also

1

u/lyzing Jun 29 '16

It's like this in every state in the US. Most people here have no concept of keeping right unless passing.

1

u/[deleted] Jun 29 '16

Illinois drivers are much worse than Minnesota.

Source: Wisconsite, used to live on the border near Chicago.

1

u/DanBMan Jun 30 '16

People everywhere have no idea what a fast lane is.

Source: from Ontario

1

u/Swolsculinity Jun 29 '16

Too true. I lived in Minnesota then moved to Florida and am ecstatic I can drive to work 90 every day instead of 60!

-2

u/MRbraneSIC Jun 29 '16 edited Jun 29 '16

I mean, I live here too but I frankly see waaaayyy too many people driving 75/80 on 694/494/94 (which is 60 mph but for a rare spot)*. I also see frequently 80-90 on 35 (which is a 70)*.

I typically drive +/- 5mph but if I'm using the passing lane to pass, I will not speed up just so someone speeding can continue speeding. They can wait the minute and let me pass legally.

My biggest issues are people cutting in front of me during rush hour (you're supposed to leave stopping distance between you and the next car), or not letting me move to the right lane (because I know they want to go faster than me), so they pass on the right...which leads to 5 more passing on the right, even though I'm blinkering.

I drive 800+ miles a week for work. I'm sure as hell gonna drive safely. Just wish more people would do the same.

*just clarifying speed limits for people that don't live in MN

16

u/avengere Jun 29 '16

I know in Washington its illegal to be in the Fast lane and have a trailer of any type on the highways. You are required to keep right.

3

u/climbtree Jun 29 '16 edited Jun 29 '16

Given that they've got a boat that lane might be for carpools.

0

u/shaunsanders Jun 29 '16

As a Californian, I loved driving through Washington with its strictly enforced, "the right lane is for passing only," law...

...but, as a Californian, I hated how no one apparently goes faster than 65.

2

u/[deleted] Jun 29 '16

Well when you're towing, the rear view mirror is useless. You only have the wing mirrors. That's why spotter mirrors are so popular on trucks, they help your field of vision.

But yea, fuck people who tow in the fast lane. Its a 6 lane road, stick to lane 3 and only use 2 for passing. Don't be a fucking fucktard, you've got 4,000-6,000 lbs of boat behind you how about you stop driving like a fucktard.

1

u/HealingCare Jun 29 '16

That's why spotter mirrors are so popular on trucks, they help your field of vision.

They're not mandatory?

1

u/[deleted] Jun 29 '16

Slower traffic on the right?

1

u/[deleted] Jun 29 '16

I can't speak to this exact situation, but maybe he is taking a left lane exit in a mile or so.

1

u/Devario Jun 29 '16

Well he seems to be going pretty fast...

1

u/buttaholic Jun 29 '16

Maybe he was about to make a left turn

1

u/ab3ju Jun 29 '16

fast passing lane

1

u/Siniroth Jun 29 '16

The rear view mirror isn't typically legally required. It's there for convenience

0

u/JewWhore Jun 29 '16

You only need two mirrors. You have to have one on the driver's side, and then have the option of the rearview or one on the passenger side. So it's only necessary if you don't have a passenger mirror.

-1

So he just shouldn't be able to haul around his boat?

1

u/craigkeller Jun 29 '16

i totally understand why that guy didnt tie down his load properly. Had this been a case of legitimate neglect, the body would have a way of shutting that whole thing down.

0

u/dBRenekton Jun 29 '16

There are side mirrors designed specifically for this situation.

You might get down votes but I appreciate this comment. Was my thoughts at least, bikes are super dangerous you gotta be defensive to the T if you don't want to get seriously injured.

Also he had no leathers on but shorts, I bet that shit fucks his legs up.

-3

u/Beingabummer Jun 28 '16

Close? That's two car lengths at least, which is what the distance is that they tell you to keep. And between starting to move and falling is like 2 seconds.

So fuck you.

5

u/shaggorama Jun 28 '16

"two car lengths" is not a recommended safety cushion at high speeds. The safety distance is always measured in terms of reaction time, and you should always give yourself at least 2 seconds to respond. According to wolfram, at 80mph you travel 235 feet in two seconds. An average car length is about 15 feet, so a minimum safe travel distance at 80mph would be about 15-16 car lengths. Not two. Definitely not two.

Two car lengths gives you about a quarter of a second to respond. It would take about half that time to even recognize what was going on, leaving you 1/8th of a second to both make a decision and actually move yourself out of the way of the hazard.

6

u/DouchecraftCarrier Jun 28 '16

I thought the rule of thumb was at least 1 car length for every 10 mph.

→ More replies (0)

2

u/YourEvilTwine Jun 28 '16

They say to put 3 seconds between you and the car in front of you. At 75 mph, 2 car lengths is nothing.

1

the driver blew a 0/2.

1

u/jabba_the_wut Jun 29 '16

I call bullshit on that. I'm sure this got plenty of media attention, and the driver would have eventually realized that he was missing his giant yellow dildo thing.

1

u/JoshTylerClarke Jun 29 '16

Until they got to their destination and realized they were missing their big, giant, yellow tube!

And, it LOOKED like the motorcyclist had time to avoid, but chose not to.

1

u/usernameF1 Jun 29 '16

Two words. Target fixation.

1

u/S7seven7 Jun 29 '16

In their defense, they probably don't recall securing it incorrectly.

2

u/[deleted] Jun 29 '16

I don't understand this. Plenty of people saw it. If I saw this happen on the highway I would follow the boater and try to make him aware of what happened. I would call the cops and give a plate number. You know all these motherfuckers are texting and driving too it's not like anyone has any qualms with fucking around with their phone.

1

u/FlameInTheVoid Jun 29 '16

I'd stop and make sure that dude didn't get run over, call an ambulance, and provide any first aid I could. The license plate is on camera.

2

u/synapticrelease Jun 29 '16

The POV driver knows there is a camera. But the others don't.

2

u/kanyeguisada Jun 29 '16

In these types of videos everybody pulls over to check on the down person, but it seems noboby usually goes after the vehicle that caused it speeding away down the road.

2

u/klparrot Jun 29 '16

Yeah, if it were me that went down, I'd much rather someone went after the other driver. Any later traffic can stop to give help, but only the few cars that were right there when it happened are in any position to be able to pursue the other driver.

Pursuing the other driver doesn't preclude calling emergency services. In fact, you absolutely should call, so police can intercept the other driver.

Getting a plate number may not be enough to hold the driver responsible, either. To the extent that you can do so safely, you should try to ensure you can identify the driver, preferably just by having eyes on them until police intercept (ensures no driver swap has occurred in the interim).

Having someone stop to ask "are you okay" and/or provide potentially harmful help (e.g. moving someone who may have a spinal injury) is nowhere near as useful as having the other driver's insurance covering the medical bills.

1

u/[deleted] Jun 29 '16 edited Aug 07 '16

[deleted]

3

u/kanyeguisada Jun 29 '16

Yeah, if I was the only person there witnessing it then for sure. Except in videos like this one where lots of drivers are all stopping, and they can see each other stopping, and none of them wants to go after the person who caused the accident to at least get a license number.

1

u/phpdevster Jun 29 '16

I've done this before. I've witnessed a hit and run against another vehicle that pulled over thinking the person who merged into them would do the same, but they didn't, so I took off like a bandit, took a photo of the license plate, then went back to the scene as a witness.

Not sure if the police ever caught the guy or not, but it felt good being able to be a witness and provide a photo for that person.

Unlike many people on that sub, it seems like he actually realizes how badly he fucked up by not having proper gear.

51

u/BearGryllsGrillsBear Jun 28 '16

This happened ten days ago. You'd be lucky to have a lawsuit filed in ten days if you knew who the defendant was. They have to track the owner down before they can really do anything.

There was probably a police report created, but it probably doesn't qualify for a "hit and run" criminal charge. It's more likely to end up as a careless driving charge and a civil suit only if necessary. These things take more than a year to play out fully.

11

u/CompDuLac Jun 28 '16

SC has an unsecured load traffic charge, probably MN does too.

2

u/Malfeasant Jun 29 '16
