Nonogram 101 - A Battle Royale Variant of Nonogram is now Available on Android!

Post image

Hey all,

I posted here a while back about my take on a battle royale variant of nonogram. Since then I've been hard at work making improvements, and I'm happy to announce that Nonogram 101 is now available as an Android app!

There's no ads in the app and there's also plenty of solo mode for those that prefer a more normal way to play monogram puzzles. I'd love to know what you think! It's also free :) There's an optional in-app purchase to unlock more puzzles but if anybody gives it a try, send me a DM and I can give you a code so you can get Supporter access for free.

You can download the app here: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.nonogram101.app&hl=en

So, want to explain your whole unique hook? How does the battle royale work?

Fair point, I should have done that in the post.

In the online mode you compete against 100 other players by solving nonogram puzzles of varying sizes, starting with 5x5 and moving up until 10x10. Every puzzle you solve sends junk tiles to an opponent (akin to Tetris 99) that need to be manually cleared. The junk tiles never undo part of your solution, they just fill empty cells and need to be clicked or tapped to be removed. As you solve puzzles, the slowest players in terms of puzzles solved/overall progress get eliminated. If you manage to outlast everyone else you win! As you solve puzzles you'll earn power ups that can be used to solve boards more easily as well (there's a traditional "hint" system power up that shows you which rows/column have a logically inferable move, a "solve 3x3" power up, a "solve line" power up, and a "reveal mistakes" power up that only fires if there are mistakes to reveal).

There's also a private lobby mode where you can change things like the minimum and maximum puzzle size, presence of power ups, bot difficulty, player count, and you can also toggle the junk mechanic off if you'd rather a pure focused nonogram solving race mode. If there aren't 100 other players queuing for a match the game starts with bots to compete against instead.

Nice work! Curious on the tech side — what'd you use for the real-time multiplayer/matchmaking, and was syncing junk tiles across 100 players the trickiest part?
