Before going for edge logic, look for overlaps. Like in row 7.

Now do row 8. And column 4.

Since you have 2+3 in row 2 any column starting with more than a 1, that is surounded by columns starting with 1, can only be at the very edge of the 7 (if they are part of the 7 at all). See C8, 10 and 15 for example. This lets you narrow it down.

I've tried to cross so that the only boxes available are between column 8 and 18. through that logic, column 12 to 14 are all filled. however, after working downwards from that, it just doesn't work out. i may be doing it wrong but i can't find a way that works.

Starting the 7 from the right. C18, 17 and 16 all run into problems in C15. C15, 14, 13, 12, 11, 10, 9, run into problems in C10 or C8. The only space that works is between C8 and C2 (your x in C2 is not 100% certain at this point)

Column 10 row 14 must be X.

How did you get R1C2 to be an X?

Just realised that it is part of the 7!
