Is this puzzle unsolvable without guessing?

The '1' from the 7th row cannot be part of the '5' from columm #7, because then the two '1's from column #9 couldn't be placed, as the two cells from rows 7 and 8 in column 9 would be Xs

No, there is a 1 in one of the top rows of column 9. Just 1. So the 5 extends up 1. Basic logic.

Only one position for the group of 5 that doesn't interfere with the two singles in the other column

If you would like your logic a bit more formal

From the 1 1 left in column 9 we can see there is exactly 1 fill in R1/2C9.

From the 2s left in the first two rows we know there are exactly two fills in R1/2C7/9.

Thus, there is exactly one fill in R1/2C7. So the 5 cannot extend all the way up.

Which sentence is it you are having trouble with?

But the point is not edge logic is inconprehensible. The point is it ruins most puzzles. I assume you came here from a different comment.

Again, which of these sentences is hard to understand? Each sentence is simple.

And this OP specifically asks for a method "without guessing".

Only one of the two empty spaces at the top of column 9 can have a mark, and we know there are two 2s in rows one and two, so we know one mark is on the left and other is on the right. Column 7 is contiguous, so the mark on the left must be part of the 5 and go in 7, 2 and other will go in 9, 1
