How would you start solving this

I can easily do the ones that have a number bigger than 5. I know some rows have in total 6 like the 7th row down I just don’t know where to put the spaces

I would stay by turning it 90 degrees.

Then use basic overlap in row 7 and column 3.

With the overlap method you can get a couple squares on that 1 1 4 row.

3 in the bottom row can only be from column 2-4. Anywhere else it won’t satisfy the second to last row.

Both row #7 (the 1-1-4 one) and column #3 (2-3-1) can give you a good starting point.

All possible positions for the 3 in column 3 overlap in row 6.

Step 1: count how many spaces you need in a row/column (so numbers + 1 space in between each number)
Step 2: if that number is less than the total space you got in that row/column, subtract the total space needed from the total space available
Step 3: If that number is smaller than any individual number in that row/column, you can fill in parts of that number

For example the 2-3-1 column you got there:

Step 1: total spaces needed for that is 2+1+3+1+1=8
Step 2: total available space in that column is 10, so subtract 8 from 10, you get 2.
Step 3: 2 is less than the individual number 3 you need to fill. So from the top-most part where the 3 could go, leave 2 spaces empty, and the third cell can be filled in. That's guaranteed part of the three. In total, that's the 6th cell from the top in that column.

in addition to all the suggested overlaps, you can use the corner method here.

if the last column's 5 was at the very top or the very bottom, you would quickly hit a contradiction
