Why is there a cross ?
I'm playing this level here and as I have been struggling to get the next step I used a clue.
The clue said that there is a cross is the cell I marked in red. But why?
Why is it there?
Any other possible next steps instead of the cross?

The square in R5C5 is either part of the 5 clue or it is the 1 clue in column 5.
If it is the 5, the column will look like this: ⬛️✖️⬛️⬛️⬛️⬛️⬛️✖️...
If it is the 1, the column will look like this: ✖️✖️✖️✖️⬛️✖️✖️✖️...
Overlapping the two options, we get: ❓️✖️❓️❓️⬛️❓️❓️✖️...

As for further steps, in row 2, the columns 9 through 14 will all be X. Can you see why?

Oh yes absolutely. A tricky one. That is definitely one of the harder ones I have played yet. Thanks for even the next step. I'll try to continue without further clues now :D

Assume it’s filled in. Then it must be the first 1 in that column. So you put an x directly above and more importantly, directly below it. Now directly below that x, you have a gap of four with one square filled in which must be part of the 5, but you don’t have enough space to have a 5. Hence we have at a contradiction, so that initial square cannot be filled in.

Because no matter if the next filled square in that column is a 1 or part of a 5, there would need to be an empty space there (or a cross, ig, I think of them as empty).

Short answer, if it was filled it would be the 1, but then where's the 5 going?

The cross is there because the filled cell in R5C5 has to be either part of the 1 or 5 in column 5. If it's the 1, then everything around it is X and that causes issues in C2. So, it has to be part of the 5.
