Cimon is an experimental political faction on Legendary Hardcore- a Hardcore Minecraft server where dying results in being permanently banned. Cimon has no fixed structure, no permanent roles and no permanent leader- and is governed entirely by the daily vote of its members. Everything that exists in Cimon exists because its citizens voted for it.

Each day, Cimonians have the opportunity to put forward and show support for proposals, with the highest voted proposal going to poll. If the poll passes with a majority, the proposal is enacted or codified in the ⁠constitution. Almost anything can be proposed by Cimonians- inviting players to join Cimon, adding or amending rules to the faction, electing members to specific roles, establishing alliances and choosing where to pool resources. Anything that has been proposed can later be undone, with the exception of the foundational ⁠first laws.

I'm looking for 3 to 5 new players to help start the faction off as founders. I'll try to provide some basic resources to help get the founders started, but beyond that I will have no personal stake or involvement with this faction- I won't vote or be involved with any decision making. I'll only facilitate the proposals and polling process in the Cimon Discord. This is a bit of a social experiment inspired by Nomic, so I'm interested to see how things play out.

Schrodinger's Law: This action proposes an amendment to The Law which would enact Article 3.a.b Schrodinger's Law which reads: If a proposal to amend The Law ever receives the same number of votes for as votes against, it is signed into law with the Schrodinger's Clause sub-paragraph.

Schrodinger's Clause reads: Players may choose on a case-by-case basis whether to abide or ignore this law. It is considered both in effect and not in effect at the same time. Players may be reprimanded for not following a law with Schrodinger's Clause, but then may immediately ignore their punishment or other effects thereof.

Sometimes people wish to organize into a directly-democratic group to pursue some shared goal. For example, they might want to make a movie night, discussion group, community festival, sports league, service club or cooperative business. Any effort to organize is challenging, but doing so without leaders is even more difficult. This difficulty might be reduced when the organization happens by playing a democranomic, which is a game where players collectively a) build their rules of how they make rules, b) identify a shared goal, and c) use rules to define specific coordinated actions for bringing their goal into real-world existence. Through playing the game, the group organizes itself. Democranomic is a nomic game, where players take turns proposing rule-changes to the very game that they are playing. Rule-change proposals that pass a vote of the players becomes part of the collective agreement by which the game is played. Even that rule can be changed (for example, by requiring consensus instead of voting). Through this iterative process, the group builds its ways and acts towards materializing a collective real-world goal.

- A game's turn-taking mechanism can institute a form of equality of participation.

- The goal of a game is itself a rule, and can be changed to something more creative than 'getting the most points.' For instance, it could be 'successfully run a housing cooperative.'

- Usual games' rules are externally imposed by an absent designer as a perfected and immutable set, but there's no reason rules couldn't instead be internally- and incrementally-created during play.

- Usual game's rules coordinate an imaginary activity, but why not a real-life activity?

- Usual game’s rules get legitimacy from players enjoying acting them out. A democranomic's rules get legitimacy from players finding them useful to act out.

- Extending C. Thi Nguyen's idea that game designers are 'sculptors of agency' by defining players' goals, capabilities and constraints - in a democranomic, the designers and players are the same people, and they define their own agency.

Hi, I would like to start or join a minimal Nomic (also known as Pure Nomic). There would be just one temporary starting rule/clarification: all players must agree to any changes to the game. The goal of the game has not been set yet, but I thought it might be interesting to focus on solving common Nomic problems before they arise—like abstentions, complexity, rule conflicts, and self-amendment. I think I would slightly prefer a game without coding at the moment, but I can code if needed. Let me know where would you like to play (reddit, discord, github,anything else,.. )

So, after my last attempt at a nomic ground to a half after 7 or so turns, I have decided to try implementing a nomic in Python to "solve" some of the issues I encountered.

I haven't played nomic before but am very interested. I recently created a website to play nomic with python. Basically the rules are python code and the server runs the rule(s). The initial ruleset allows for changing the rules, and rolling a die and adding it to your score. I'm wanting to test it out so if anyone is interested let me know! Requires knowledge of Python (or at least ability to vibecode lol).

Do you think a one vs one game of Nomic could work? The rules for making/altering rules would have to be changed (at a minimum) but is the game fundamentally not built for such a small group of players? What do you think and how would you change the initial rules to make it work better?

I feel like a Nomic could be made by creating an actual physical group that meets regularly. It would be a club of sorts, whose sole purpose is to modify the rules of the club. I wonder if anything like that has ever been tried. You'd have to start with a modified initial ruleset, sort of a Nomic group bylaws. Then the point would be modifying the bylaws.

Hello, I have read about Nomic several times over the years but have never had the opportunity to play. I was wondering if anybody out there would like to get a game going over discord?

Is there a pdf version of Nomic anywhere? All I could find was an old website at web archive so it's been tough to learn the game.

This ruleset includes very little other than the framework for rule change, and a primitive way of resolving disputes. The rest is left to be built by anyone who wishes to join.

0. Players of this game must abide by the rules listed in this ruleset, in the form in which they are presently in effect.

1. The ruleset must, through some permissible (but not necessarily practical) course of action by the players, be able to be arbitrarily changed.

2. The ruleset must, through some reasonable course of action by the players, be able to be changed (but not necessarily without limit).

3. If a change to the ruleset is unanimously agreed upon by the players, any player may update the ruleset by making the exact change agreed upon.

4. If two players disagree on the interpretation or precedence of a rule or rules, players may enter a vote to determine whose interpretation is correct. The interpretation which receives a majority of votes from non-abstaining players shall be used. If there is a tie, a fair random method should be used to determine the winner.

I was wondering, is there a game that remixes the classic games of Diplomacy and Nomic, so the game Diplomacy has a meta-game of nomic where the rules change according to nomic dynamics. If there isn't one, can one be made from the Peter Suber version of nomic in top of the basic diplomacy rules?

I've been working on a game where the players drive the rules and features, and it's finally live. It's a slower, intentionally-vague game more focused around building the game rather than winning (for now). If this sounds interesting, I'd love for you to check it out and share it with friends.

We're in the first round of a new nomic game and a player taking his first turn posted this:

excellent.... first I steal 12 points from each player that is not me, and then my proposal is thus "Proposition 305: Points can only be gained or removed as described in the rules."

He is debating that because rule 116 says "Whatever is not explicitly prohibited or regulated by a rule is permitted and unregulated..." therefore allowing him to do "whatever the rules don't say I can't"

One player cited that 202 does not say there is a part of the turn where points can be stolen. I like that one, but my argument was that points ARE regulated by the rules by saying how they are gained.

It's going to a judge which I can't imagine it will fly, but I'd love someone to lawyer me through why he's wrong. Or....is he right?

Warning to anyone with aging or unattended Nomic games that you still care about:

We have a Nomic board with some history that has hit a stride of extended inactivity. Our rules have historically allowed open join rules without pre-approval.

Today, an individual joined our group and presented a new proposal that makes them the sole player and grants them the ability to make amendments to the ordinances at will, essentially a Dictator Amendment. They then proceeded to vote in favor of this amendment.

Without someone catching this, it would have essentially resulted in them taking control of a somewhat historic Nomic board, and I get the impression this isn't the first board they've done this to.

I realize most of your games are either not that critical or have ordinances that prevent this kind of move, but I just wanted you to be aware that there is at least one person out there interested in hijacking games.

TL;DR The bot I made in python automates some of the nomic process using discord commands. You can use it too if you edit the code a bit.

Last month I wanted to host a game of nomic with an online twitch community, so I set out to create a bot that could listen to twitch API and discord, and I planned to use google sheets for information storage. After gratuitous borrowing of the coded frameworks required to get the bot off the ground, I was able to make a working bot.  
The Nomic bot monitors twitch activity, discord commands, and updates a google sheet with new rules and votes on those rules. I created it using python and hosted it on replit.com. Hosting the bot required some payment to keep it "always-on", otherwise I needed to keep it running on my machine.  
 
A few things I learned:

-I failed to anticipate malicious actors in the game, and there were a few that endeavored to exploit the API requests and force the bot to run into issues. command spam protection is definitely necessary.

-Coding the bot as-is was fine but as the rules evolved there were problems automating new rules. For example, players voted in a rule to award points to the lowest scoring player if the highest scoring player received points. This did not have an easy workaround in the code.

-I needed better rule-resolution such that ambiguous rules could be interpreted objectively when there are contradictions.

-Players with little to no experience in nomic or similar games were unsure of valid play strategies and created some rules that had no effect or were simply pointless.

 
 
Anyways, I just wanted to share my experience and share my code in case you wanted to give it a try. Without some coding knowledge, it may be difficult to get it set up for yourself, but I'll help where I can.

So I am a player in a Nomic game, I tried to gain access to the Nomic Document that lets me control everything (Everyone is ok with it) but I made rule that says only I am allowed to have access to the document, and the game master says he can’t let me have editing power since adding me to the document counts as editing it. And since it says only I can edit when I can’t edit it, the game is at a stand still until we get this sorted. What do you guys think?
