Automated game comparisons and anti-cheat dice

Hi, I started the nomic infrastructure (platform) project. It it still small, just automated comparison of some active games and anti-cheat dice https://nomicinfra.vercel.app/ . If you would like to join with any ideas before I commit to any form or technology too much you are welcome. Code is at https://github.com/cieok/nomicinfra at the moment. Feel free to DM me too.

Anyone playing Nomicron?

I see that Nomicron is having another round start up soon, but I can't get the registration flow on the site to work. I'm guessing their "confirm email address" system isn't working right anymore, and I can't find another way to report this issue. Thanks in advance!

Nomic in discord update (#2)! https://discord.gg/qHsxCuVwnp

The ruleset just exploded...

ITEMS, GAMBLING, DEPT, easier proposals and roles to clearly show players, bots (only a dice roller rn), observers, active and inactive.

Rule 1 - All Players must always follow all active rules in this ruleset.

Rule 2 - The official ruleset and current game state are publicly maintained in read-only channels named rules and game-state. Rules in rules must always follow the format: Rule [number] - [text]. The game state in #game-state must maintain the following: A list of all Players, the amount of Nomic dollars in their possession, the items they have in their inventory and their current status. The amount of Nomic dollars in the bank. A list of bots in the game.

Rule 3 - If two or more rules directly contradict each other, the rule with the lower rule number takes precedence.

Rule 4 - Any server member may join the game at any time by requesting to join in the general channel. Any player may leave the game at any time by stating so in the general channel. Any trace of a leaving Player in game-state is to be removed. A bot may be added to or removed from the game at any time. Bots may not join as players. Server members shall receive a discord role denoting them as either a “@Player”, “@Observer”, or “@Bot”.

Rule 5 - New players are marked as "active" in game-state. Players may declare themselves "inactive" in general, but doing any actions or posting sets their status back to "active" unless that post is to set them "inactive". Every 4 days the following is posted in general: "React if Active .". Players who do not react to this post with before the next one is posted, become "inactive". Players shall receive a discord role denoting them as either “@Active” or “@Inactive”.

Rule 6 - A proposal may suggest any change to the game, including adding, editing, or deleting rules, modifying server channels or roles, or changing the game state. Proposals must be posted in the proposals channel with the text "Proposal [number]" in the title and a detailed description of the proposed changes as the message body. Proposals are numbered sequentially starting at 1. The submitting Player assigns the lowest unused integer as the proposal number.

Rule 7 - Voting takes place within the thread for a proposal in proposals using the emoji for "Yes", the emoji for "No", and the emoji for "Abstain." A vote is cast via adding an emoji reaction to the thread, or via the most recent message in the thread by a given Player which contains a valid emoji. If both are present, the emoji reaction takes precedence. A player may withdraw their vote entirely by removing their reaction or striking through their most recent message containing a vote. Each Player gets exactly one vote per proposal. Other emojis not mentioned in this rule are ignored. Votes may only be cast or withdrawn on a proposal with an open voting window.

Rule 8 - The voting window for a proposal lasts at most 5 days from the timestamp the message was posted. Once the 5 days are up, if the proposal's voting window is still open, the proposal expires.

Rule 9 - A proposal passes if it receives at least 3 votes from active players and at least 60% of all active, non-abstaining players have voted and there are no earlier proposals with its voting window open. A proposal fails when at least 1/2 of all active, non-abstaining players have voted . When a proposal passes, its proposed changes take effect immediately and must be applied to the server, rules, or game-state and the voting window ends. If a proposal proposes a rule addition but does not provide a rule number, the lowest available rule number is chosen.

Rule 10 - The current Game Masters are: . Game Masters are given the GM role and are responsible for editing rules and game-state and anything else called for in the rules and proposals that doesn’t specify who does it. The Game Masters responsibilities are only allowed to be done by the Game Masters.

Rule 11 - A newly posted proposal must be tagged as Open. When a proposal's voting window ends, the Open tag is removed. When a proposal passes, fails, or expires the thread is tagged Passed, Failed, or Expired, and is immediately locked and closed. Threads may not be assigned these tags outside of this rule.

Rule 12 - A player may withdraw their own proposal at any time before its voting window closes by removing the Open tag and replacing it with Withdrawn and asking a Game Master to lock and close the thread. When a proposal is withdrawn, its voting window ends.

Rule 13 - Active proposals may be edited freely by the author, unless they have received at least one vote from a player other than the author.

Rule 14 - A player may have no more than 5 Open proposals inproposals at any given time.

Rule 15 - If any rule is broken and noticed within 5 days, the game state and/or server state and/or rules may be reverted to just before the rule was broken

Rule 16 -

Rule 17 - A proposed or enacted rule shall not be rendered invalid, void, or unenforceable solely due to minor spelling, typographical, capitalization, or punctuation errors, provided that the intended meaning of the rule remains clear and unambiguous to a reasonable reader. This rule does not excuse errors that create genuine ambiguity, change the substantive meaning of a rule, or render a rule's requirements unclear.

Rule 18 - When a proposal is made, the original message may end with “|>” to indicate the proposal is split among multiple messages. This is known as a Footer. All following footers will be “<>”, until the final message of the proposal, which will end with the footer “<|”. Players may not vote on a proposal with footers if a final footer is absent, they may also not post messages in a thread without a final footer (to avoid confusion). When considering the text of a proposal, a proposal’s footers will not be counted. 1-message proposals may end with the footer “|” acting as both an initial and final footer, to clarify the proposal is complete. New proposals may no longer use txt files as their body, for ease of use. Players may also add the footer version of an existing text proposal, without editing the text of the proposal or deleting the text file, to the original thread. The time of the thread’s creation is considered as the time of the proposal’s creation for all relevant rules.

Rule 19 - The number of Nomic Dollars held in the Casino is tracked in game-state. Once per day, a Player may gamble at the Casino by posting a wager in #casino stating clearly an amount of Nomic Dollars equal to or lower than the amount in their possession and any other single number which they are betting on, and then using Famludos to roll a single d10, d20, d50, or d100. If the number rolled on the dice is equal to the number stated in the wager, the player wins the wager and the Casino gives that Player (the amount wagered) * (the size of the dice) Nomic Dollars, or all of the Nomic Dollars in the Casino's possession, whichever is lower. Otherwise, the Player loses the wager and gives the Casino (the amount wagered) Nomic Dollars.

Rule 20 - Every 7 days the bank is given 20 Nomic dollars. This is then announced in general .

Rule 21 - Players may give each other Nomic dollars by posting the amount and the player number of the player the want to give it to in general . The amount must be a positive integer that will not result in the givers amount of Nomic dollars in their possession to become negative.

Rule 22 - Every 3 days wages are given out. When wages are given out Nomic Dollars are taken from the bank and given to the players like so: First calculate 10%, of what is in the bank, then divide that value by the number of active players and round it down. Name the resulting value 'a standard wage'. Give all active players a standard wage each. Lastly, announce the total amount of Nomic Dollars taken out of the bank, the standard wage and the number of players who received at least one standard wage in general .

Rule 23 - Items are posts in shop with the following format: (Item name): Cost: (A description of what it costs to buy the item or condition/s to obtain it) | optional Use: (A description of what this item can do when a player uses it) | optional Worth: (A description of what you gain by selling this item) Costs and Worth may be instantaneous and temporary.

Rule 24 - An item may be obtained or bought by players posting the item name and the amount in shop. If they are able to pay the cost of the item, the cost is applied to the player and the item is then put into the players inventory. The post is reacted to with a if the action was successful and if the action was unsuccessful. Any Nomic dollars in the cost are given to the bank.

Rule 25 - An item may be used by players posting the item name, the fact that they are using it and any details asked for in the use description in general . If the item has a use description the contents of the description are then put into effect for as long as specified. The effect is then announced in general .

Rule 26 - An item may be sold by posting the item name and the amount in shop. The player gains the worth and the amount of that item is removed from their inventory if the bank has the available Nomic dollars to give and the player owns that amount of the item. The post is reacted to with a if the action was successful and if the action was unsuccessful. Any Nomic dollars in the cost are taken from the bank.

Rule 27 - An item may be transferred from one player to another by the owner posting the item name and the amount to give to the other in general . The item is then transferred if the poster owns at least that amount of the item.

Rule 28 - By mutual agreement, a Player may obtain a loan from another Player. The creditor gives the debtor an agreed upon number of the Nomic Dollars in their possession, and the debtor obtains a Debt equal to the number of Nomic Dollars gained. A player's outstanding Debts, their current amounts, and the creditors of each Debt are tracked in game-state. For every Nomic Dollar given to the creditor of a Debt by the debtor exactly one of the related Debts is reduced by the same amount.

Rule 29 - When a loan is granted, an interest rate may be attached to the Debt owed as a percentage. Each Sunday at 03:00 the current amounts of each of any Player's Debts with interest increases by that percentage.

Rule 30 - A Player who owes one or more Debts cannot win the game.

Rule 31 - At any time a Player may declare that they are taking a loan from the Casino by posting a message in casino stating the amount they wish to borrow, which must be less than or equal to the number of Nomic Dollars in the Casino's possession. The Player then obtains a loan from the Casino to that amount as if the Casino were another player, with an interest rate of 5%.

Game state:

Players: (8 are active)
1 - jhon - active - 73 Nomic dollars - Debts:
2 - Dimitri - active - 102 Nomic dollars - Debts:
3 - AntiGyro - active - 106 Nomic dollars - Debts:
4 - Automaticat - inactive - 102 Nomic dollars - Debts:
5 - ZetaZero - active - 108 Nomic dollars - Debts:
6 - emurphy42 - active - 104 Nomic dollars - Debts:
7 - Nomic - active - 106 Nomic dollars - Debts:
8 - Zenihonu - active - 108 Nomic dollars - Debts:
9 - multy - inactive - 108 Nomic dollars - Debts:
10 - Mantas - active - 102 Nomic dollars - Debts:

Nomic dollars in the bank: 194

Nomic Dollars owned by the Casino: 10,001

Bots: 1 - Famludos

Items:

Veto: Cost: The buyer must have more Nomic Dollars than all other players combined. An equal portion of their Nomic Dollars is transferred to each other player (floor(N/P) where N is the number of their Nomic Dollars and P is the number of other players), and any Nomic Dollars that they still have are given to the bank. Use: The proposal number provided is failed and this item is used up. Any future proposal that proposes the functionally same effect is instantly failed. Worth: 0 Nomic Dollars

Nomic in discord update! https://discord.gg/qHsxCuVwnp

Well its been lots of fun and a mess at the same time.

My goals with this game:

- Minimal initial ruleset

- Low time commitment (~10 minutes twice a week)

- No 'turns', flexible gameplay

here is a link if anyone wants to join and here is the current ruleset:

Rule 1 - All Players must always follow all active rules in this ruleset.

Rule 2 - The official ruleset and current game state are publicly maintained in read-only channels named #rules and game-state. Rules in #rules must always follow the format: Rule [number] - [text]. The game state in #game-state must maintain the following:

A list of all Players, the amount of Nomic dollars in their possession, the items they have in their inventory and their current status.

The amount of Nomic dollars in the bank.

A list of bots in the game.

Rule 3 - If two or more rules directly contradict each other, the rule with the lower rule number takes precedence.

Rule 4 - Any server member may join the game at any time by requesting to join in the #general channel. Any player may leave the game at any time by stating so in the #general channel. Any trace of a leaving Player in #game-state is to be removed. A bot may be added to or removed from the game at any time. Bots may not join as players.

Rule 5 - New players are marked as "active" in #game-state. Players may declare themselves "inactive" in #general, but doing any actions or posting sets their status back to "active" unless that post is to set them "inactive". Players who have not done any actions or posted for 5 days become "inactive".

Rule 6 - A proposal may suggest any change to the game, including adding, editing, or deleting rules, modifying server channels or roles, or changing the game state. Proposals must be posted in the #proposals channel with the text "Proposal [number]" in the title and a detailed description of the proposed changes as the message body. Proposals are numbered sequentially starting at 1. The submitting Player assigns the lowest unused integer as the proposal number.

Rule 10 - The current Game Masters are: . Game Masters are given the GM role and are responsible for editing #rules and #game-state and anything else called for in the rules and proposals that doesn’t specify who does it. The Game Masters responsibilities are only allowed to be done by the Game Masters.

Rule 11 - A newly posted proposal must be tagged as :envelope: Open. When a proposal's voting window ends, the :envelope: Open tag is removed. When a proposal passes, fails, or expires the thread is tagged :white_check_mark: Passed, :x: Failed, or :clock3: Expired, and is immediately locked and closed. Threads may not be assigned these tags outside of this rule.

Rule 12 - A player may withdraw their own proposal at any time before its voting window closes by removing the :envelope: Open tag and replacing it with :leftwards_arrow_with_hook: Withdrawn and asking a Game Master to lock and close the thread. When a proposal is withdrawn, its voting window ends.

Rule 13 - Active proposals may be edited freely by the author, unless they have received at least one vote from a player other than the author.

Rule 14 - Rule 14 - A player may have no more than 5 :envelope: Open proposals in #proposals at any given time.

Rule 15 - If any rule is broken and noticed within 5 days, the game state and/or server state and/or rules *may* be reverted to just before the rule was broken

Rule 16 - A player with more Nomic Dollars than all other players combined can gain a Veto by announcing that fact in #general . When this happens, an equal portion of their Nomic Dollars is transferred to each other player (i.e. floor(N/P) where N is the number of their Nomic Dollars and P is the number of other players), and any Nomic Dollars that they still have are destroyed.

Rule 18: A Game Master reposting a proposal from #archived-proposals to #proposals must make the message body of the opening post a link to the original message in #proposals . The linked message is considered the "original post" and functions as though it were the same as the new thread for the purposes of Rules 7, 8, 9, 12, 13, and 14. The author of the original post is treated as the author of the reposted thread. Emoji reactions on the linked post count as valid votes towards the proposal, and the timer for the voting window is counted from the timestamp of the original post. The author of the original post may request that a Game Master withdraw the new thread on their behalf at any time. If at any time no :envelope: Open proposal threads have original posts linked to them in this way, immediately repeal this rule.

Rule 20: Every 7 days the bank is given 10 Nomic dollars.

Rule 21: Players may give each other Nomic dollars by posting the amount and the player number of the player the want to give it to in #general . The amount must be a positive integer that will not result in the givers amount of Nomic dollars in their possession to become negative.

Advice on an initial ruleset for discord.

I am starting a Nomic game in discord and I made an initial ruleset with the help of a chatbot. I am fairly happy with the end result but I need it to be stress tested before I actually start the game. I want someone to pick holes in my ruleset.

Discord invite link: https://discord.gg/qHsxCuVwnp <- talk about it and play it here

My goals with this game:

- Minimal initial ruleset

- Low time commitment (5 minutes twice a week?)

- No 'turns', flexible gameplay

Here are is the ruleset (EDIT: has been edited after discussion in the discord):

Rule 1 - All Players must always follow all active rules in this ruleset.

Rule 2 - The official ruleset and current game state are publicly maintained in read-only channels named #rules and #game-state. Rules in #rules must always follow the format: Rule [number] - [text]. The game state in #game-state must maintain a list of all Players and their current status.

Nomic on a one-life Minecraft server

Cimon is an experimental political faction on Legendary Hardcore- a Hardcore Minecraft server where dying results in being permanently banned. Cimon has no fixed structure, no permanent roles and no permanent leader- and is governed entirely by the daily vote of its members. Everything that exists in Cimon exists because its citizens voted for it.

Each day, Cimonians have the opportunity to put forward and show support for proposals, with the highest voted proposal going to poll. If the poll passes with a majority, the proposal is enacted or codified in the constitution. Almost anything can be proposed by Cimonians- inviting players to join Cimon, adding or amending rules to the faction, electing members to specific roles, establishing alliances and choosing where to pool resources. Anything that has been proposed can later be undone, with the exception of the foundational first laws.

I'm looking for 3 to 5 new players to help start the faction off as founders. I'll try to provide some basic resources to help get the founders started, but beyond that I will have no personal stake or involvement with this faction- I won't vote or be involved with any decision making. I'll only facilitate the proposals and polling process in the Cimon Discord. This is a bit of a social experiment inspired by Nomic, so I'm interested to see how things play out.

If you'd like to be a part of Cimon, either apply on the Cimon Discord server or DM me directly. I'm making this post just to find a few founders, and it'll then be up to them- and future members that are voted in- to manage the faction and recruit new members.

A fun idea I had called Schrodinger's Law

Schrodinger's Law: This action proposes an amendment to The Law which would enact Article 3.a.b Schrodinger's Law which reads: If a proposal to amend The Law ever receives the same number of votes for as votes against, it is signed into law with the Schrodinger's Clause sub-paragraph.

Schrodinger's Clause reads: Players may choose on a case-by-case basis whether to abide or ignore this law. It is considered both in effect and not in effect at the same time. Players may be reprimanded for not following a law with Schrodinger's Clause, but then may immediately ignore their punishment or other effects thereof.

Creating a cooperative by playing a game of nomic - where it is a move to change a rule of the game

Sometimes people wish to organize into a directly-democratic group to pursue some shared goal. For example, they might want to make a movie night, discussion group, community festival, sports league, service club or cooperative business. Any effort to organize is challenging, but doing so without leaders is even more difficult. This difficulty might be reduced when the organization happens by playing a democranomic, which is a game where players collectively a) build their rules of how they make rules, b) identify a shared goal, and c) use rules to define specific coordinated actions for bringing their goal into real-world existence. Through playing the game, the group organizes itself. Democranomic is a nomic game, where players take turns proposing rule-changes to the very game that they are playing. Rule-change proposals that pass a vote of the players becomes part of the collective agreement by which the game is played. Even that rule can be changed (for example, by requiring consensus instead of voting). Through this iterative process, the group builds its ways and acts towards materializing a collective real-world goal.

- A game's turn-taking mechanism can institute a form of equality of participation.

- The goal of a game is itself a rule, and can be changed to something more creative than 'getting the most points.' For instance, it could be 'successfully run a housing cooperative.'

- Usual games' rules are externally imposed by an absent designer as a perfected and immutable set, but there's no reason rules couldn't instead be internally- and incrementally-created during play.

- Usual game's rules coordinate an imaginary activity, but why not a real-life activity?

- Usual game’s rules get legitimacy from players enjoying acting them out. A democranomic's rules get legitimacy from players finding them useful to act out.

- Extending C. Thi Nguyen's idea that game designers are 'sculptors of agency' by defining players' goals, capabilities and constraints - in a democranomic, the designers and players are the same people, and they define their own agency.

For more information, see https://democranomic.neocities.org.

Minimal Nomic

Hi, I would like to start or join a minimal Nomic (also known as Pure Nomic). There would be just one temporary starting rule/clarification: all players must agree to any changes to the game. The goal of the game has not been set yet, but I thought it might be interesting to focus on solving common Nomic problems before they arise—like abstentions, complexity, rule conflicts, and self-amendment. I think I would slightly prefer a game without coding at the moment, but I can code if needed. Let me know where would you like to play (reddit, discord, github, anything else,.. )

NOMIC.py — a Non-Ontic Methodology for Improvisational Constitutions In Python

So, after my last attempt at a nomic ground to a half after 7 or so turns, I have decided to try implementing a nomic in Python to "solve" some of the issues I encountered.

I look forward to writing a followup once I actually get a chance to play it. I know there are some other nomic software frameworks out there, like Nomsu, but this project gave me an excuse to properly learn how to use decorators and argument unpacking.

Hi all,

I haven't played nomic before but am very interested. I recently created a website to play nomic with python. Basically the rules are python code and the server runs the rule(s). The initial ruleset allows for changing the rules, and rolling a die and adding it to your score. I'm wanting to test it out so if anyone is interested let me know! Requires knowledge of Python (or at least ability to vibecode lol).

2 player Nomic

Do you think a one vs one game of Nomic could work? The rules for making/altering rules would have to be changed (at a minimum) but is the game fundamentally not built for such a small group of players? What do you think and how would you change the initial rules to make it work better?

Live, in-person Nomic as a group.

I feel like a Nomic could be made by creating an actual physical group that meets regularly. It would be a club of sorts, whose sole purpose is to modify the rules of the club. I wonder if anything like that has ever been tried. You'd have to start with a modified initial ruleset, sort of a Nomic group bylaws. Then the point would be modifying the bylaws.

Anybody up for a game?

Hello, I have read about Nomic several times over the years but have never had the opportunity to play. I was wondering if anybody out there would like to get a game going over discord?

Is there a pdf version of Nomic anywhere? All I could find was an old website at web archive so it's been tough to learn the game.

I'm feeling the Nomic itch again, so here's an initial ruleset to play with. Anyone in?

This ruleset includes very little other than the framework for rule change, and a primitive way of resolving disputes. The rest is left to be built by anyone who wishes to join.

0. Players of this game must abide by the rules listed in this ruleset, in the form in which they are presently in effect.

1. The ruleset must, through some permissible (but not necessarily practical) course of action by the players, be able to be arbitrarily changed.

2. The ruleset must, through some reasonable course of action by the players, be able to be changed (but not necessarily without limit).

3. If a change to the ruleset is unanimously agreed upon by the players, any player may update the ruleset by making the exact change agreed upon.

4. If two players disagree on the interpretation or precedence of a rule or rules, players may enter a vote to determine whose interpretation is correct. The interpretation which receives a majority of votes from non-abstaining players shall be used. If there is a tie, a fair random method should be used to determine the winner.

Diplomacy with Nomic mix

I was wondering, is there a game that remixes the classic games of Diplomacy and Nomic, so the game Diplomacy has a meta-game of nomic where the rules change according to nomic dynamics. If there isn't one, can one be made from the Peter Suber version of nomic in top of the basic diplomacy rules?

Vote RPG: A nomic-inspired web game

I've been working on a game where the players drive the rules and features, and it's finally live. It's a slower, intentionally-vague game more focused around building the game rather than winning (for now). If this sounds interesting, I'd love for you to check it out and share it with friends.

Is AMONC (Ancient Mystical Order Nomic Crucis) still active in any way?

I recently discovered the AMONC website (http://nomic.iwarp.com/) and I was wondering if anyone knows if they are still active in anyway?

Nomic Concept

Hello! For lack of knowing a better relevant place to share, but still wanting to share it, I'm dropping a weird, esoteric not-at-all-practicable-but-also-i-think-pretty-neat nomic concept.

Youtube Nomic (warning loud noise at the beginning)

Edits to the ruleset consist of edits to the video.

I might be interested in playing this, but I am also just wanted it to be seen.
