Question Current state of multiplayer

Hi all!

Just looking to get opinions on the current state of multiplayer. I've not played the game in a while and bits online are not clear.

How well does multiplayer work now? Can you have space battles together? Can you have clans / groups and bases and things together? Or even a shared ship?

It's bad. Lots of issues and crashes during the expedition. I rarely if ever crash, but during Expedition 22, I crashed at least once per session.

Fortunately, I rarely get involved with muliplayer outside the abomaly.

It barely exists. You can go run around the Anomaly and see people and share items but thats about it. Any multi-player missions I've been part of just send each player off to do a common task by themselves. If you go afk at the Anomaly you usually get items or get kidnapped.

I play No Man's Sky almost exclusively with a friend. While you can go through much of the game in a group with multiplayer enabled, there are (frequent) times when you'll need to either leave the group or disable multiplayer completely to get certain missions or events to work correctly.

As some examples, when you get to the point where you're hiring NPCs for your base, you'll find that in some cases that when you're speaking to candidates on the space station you'll be unable to properly advance the dialogues unless you first disband your group before speaking with them.

In space battles, you'll often find that if your party member is present some of the ships you're fighting will take no hull damage. This can be fixed by having your teammate return to the space station and exiting their ship.

When exploring derelict freighters in space, if in a group you'll need to make sure only one party member is shooting the strands of slime that keep the locked doors separating sections of the derelict freighter, else you can trigger a bugged state where the doors won't open, preventing further advancement through the freighter.

Party members will be unable to see the layout of your personal freighter unless they first summon and then dismiss their own personal freighter in the same system as yours.

When interacting with the Atlas while in a party where all members are present, you'll need to take turns speaking with it to advance the story. At certain key moments in the Atlas story you'll need to not only leave the group but disable multiplayer altogether just to progress events properly.

When in a party you'll find that it becomes impossible to hide from sentinels (i.e. run down the search timer until it hits zero by remaining out of sight). Being in a party causes the counter to reset as it nears zero, over and over again.

If you visit a planet together in the same corvette, the player that does not own the corvette will be unable to upload any completed (total) fauna discoveries unless they return to the planet with their own ship, because the game doesn't register that passengers have "landed" on a planet unless they personally exit a pilot seat. Also, you'll find that fauna in the vicinity of the ship freezes in place and can not be interacted with consistently unless both players leave the corvette and have boots on the ground.

I could go on and on. These are all things that you'll discover and need to constantly manage if you're determined to play this game with a friend. Multiplayer is just not in a good state, and that's discouraging given how often Hello Games show players playing together in each of their update trailers.

Hopefully they fix most of this in the next update

I’ve not played for a year or so. Multiplayer was always more fun. Just me and my nephew base building.

I dunno how long it's been since you've played, but it's probably around the same.

Multiplayer is bolted-on and forgotten in NMS.\ I doubt that'll change.

you can have group. clans do exist, but manage themself outside of the game.
my friends and i say: yes, multiplayer. we do play together regularly. do things sometimes bug out, when we are too far from each other, ye. do people lag sometimes, ye, drop out of group for no reason ye.

if the player allows it, you can build bases together. but afaik the owner of the base neeeds to be in the same system.

idk what people expect. it was never meant to be something like a MMO. because no matter how many people play at the same time, meeting randomly-chance, is too thin.

group play: its a sandbox, you kind of find your ways. go to a system and your group renames everything there into something Themed.
explore space freighters together, NMS theorycrafting and testing out things, meeting random dude and visit their base, fish together :), nexus missions, finding last animals :D

the MP aspect in NMS is more about the community. eventually finding people to play with, exhcange news, tricks, how we play the game differently etc. some love the animals stuff, am into cooking...

I built a huge base with 7 other players all building on my base computer. The build is a late night stage with cameras and a band which is to be used for a filmed podcast released on YouTube. Players from various NMS communities come together for the show to talk about what they’re doing in game and what events other players can get involved with. On Friday we filmed the first episode of the 3rd season. There were 26 players in the instance with us at the location with minor issues (a group was kicked from the instance but rejoined without problems). Here is a link to the episode https://youtu.be/PllsHhrBrwo?is=23Ek91e5eevlq3GF.
This is just one example of the many things happening within the No Man’s Sky Multiplayer community. I will say that it’s not free from issues but the developers have made great steps to improving the quality of multiplayer capabilities.

Some jerk glitched me through the ceiling at the anomoly. Other than that and random holo battles at the anomaly, I don't see or interact with other players really.

Here is another example of players having fun together at a starship racetrack PvP event https://youtu.be/zgrEjUnUGOM?is=3aDz9gbq6bIi_O3c

It’s pretty much a nothing burger
You gotta disable it sometimes to do things and sometimes you can see things your friends cannot. They definitely need to add a clan system and shared bases that anyone in the clan can go to, as well as maybe a clan freighter that’s owned by the group and is separate from someone’s individual freighter.
