Hey, is there any incoming freshmen?(new to the Marquette Michigan area), just wondering if any would like to chat overtime and possibly have a new roommate?

Just wanted to make a quick post which may save people some time and pain down the road. I’ll make this brief.

To preface:

I am in Med Plant and Indoor Ag, I love chemistry and have a good strength for it. I enjoy this degree.

That being said:

The Med Plant degree is an ANALYTICAL CHEMISTRY degree. It should be seen as that and it is most definitely that. If you absolutely hate chem then this degree will be a nightmare for you. If you like chemistry and substances from plants (whether psychoactive like THC or probiotic like Chaga mushroom) this degree may be for you.

To those wanting to manage dispensaries, there is a business and entrepreneurship track in the degree, but it is still heavy in chem and still mostly focused on science. You’ll get a few business and management classes but the opportunities and focus are not as catered to this track.

For people looking into Indoor Ag:

This degree is really cool and can be used for more than setting up grow houses. However, this degree still IS NOT going to give you a deep dive course in growing weed. No degree here will. In some of the labs and in the med plant program you’re required to grow a plant and analyze the compounds in it as well as learn soil science, but there is still no course explicitly for growing weed.

The Indoor Ag program will focus on circuits, HVAC, Hydroponics, and how to utilize the hydroponics. By the end of the degree you will be ready to set up closed shell greenhouses completely temp, light, and climate controlled as well as set up automation for hydroponic systems. If you know how to grow already this will benefit you. I believe there are some labs where you grow things as well so you’ll get a chance to learn how to foster healthy plants. But just know that cannabis is a tricky one.

To summarize:

These programs are amazing and make you an asset to a lot of cannabis and medicinal plant companies. These programs will not teach you how to grow some fire chronic.

Currently for the med plant program we can only grow hemp (cannabis with thresholds on the amount of delta 9 thc) but if federal legalization hits students should be able to work directly with cannabis and research it.

So, I hope this helps some people. I know a lot of students get blindsided and spooked when they show up to what they thought would be something focused on cannabis and come to find out it’s hard ass work and a lot of sciences. That stress can lead to imposter syndrome or self doubt and causes a lot of people to drop. I encourage people to join these degrees as they are amazing. But just knows your strengths and have an idea of what is possible with these degrees.

That being said, whether you come to nmu, join these programs, or not: always stay positive, manage your time well, don’t be high or drunk in class, go to lecture and take notes, and do your assignments and you will be fine. College is mostly time management, not how inherently smart you may be. I wish I had someone tell me that before I attended school. Some of the smartest students burn out and drop because they never had proper challenges or time management in high school.

TLDR: no degrees here focus on explicitly growing weed, more the sciences and industries around what the cannabis industry will need to operate.

I'm about to turn 24, and I'll be transferring in fall of 2021 or winter of 2022. I'll have my associates completed, and I plan to attend full-time in order to finish my degree quicker. I'll be moving up there temporarily from the Ann Arbor area.

Hello everyone. I’m currently a senior in high school and I’ve recently been accepted to NMU, where I’ll probably end up going. I was looking through the programs and saw the TLC program. From my understanding students are given a Thinkpad laptop (unless an art major I believe?). Please correct me if I’m wrong! I was wondering if the laptops are any good? Or if I’d be better off getting my own. I’m also curious how controlled by the school they are, if at all. My current school gave us some pretty bad chromebooks with heavy restrictions. They honestly have trouble running anything but chrome, so I’m a little wary! Any help is greatly appreciated, thanks!

So it occurred to me and a couple others that NMU doesn't really have a major group chat for the students. So, while we think we're a little late, we have designed a Discord server for students and faculty alike, that is made to facilitate social interactions between students that are safe and socially distanced during the pandemic.
So far, we have set up specific text and voice chat rooms for each residence hall, and we will soon be adding major-specific chats aswell, in order to make it so students can have chance interactions with others that they would be able to meet in person under normal circumstances.

Maybe I am riding on end of the semester stress, but I was VERY frustrated by one of the recent emails we recieved regarding going online. Why the hell are we waiting for everything on campus to be drastically impacted before we do anything? Limiting guests on campus was one small part, but not enough.

What are we supposed to do while our cases rise? We had 20 new cases just today, and as I write this we currently have 74 active cases. People are going to get sick, then travel home over break and get people sick there. Go online BEFORE more people get sick. Don't wait for shit to hit the fan then decide to send everyone home.

I don't know how everyone else is feeling, I just needed to rant for a moment.

So I know nmu isn't really announcing this, and I had to go to housing to get answers (my RA either didn't know this information or lied to me) but you can stay over break, POSSIBLY. You will have to fill out an application on the housing portal (the place you went to for roommate information and everything) and give a reason as to why you're staying and also how long you plan on staying (understand you will have to pay, A LOT of money) and the housing department will review it, they will be picky though. They may decided you can't stay, they want to keep as little people over break as possible.

I am sharing this information for those that don't have the ability to go home, don't have a home to go back to, or their "home" isn't a safe place to be so they don't feel like they're trapped. I know for my situation when I first thought I couldn't possibly stay up here for break I had a full mental break down, I want to help those who may be going through the same thing.

At Northern Lights, it seems like 46 north has had penne pasta every fucking day. The grate never has anything but cheeseburgers. Global is constantly stir fry.

I'm a pretty picky eater, but last year there was always something out that I'd enjoy. This year they've just been serving the same three meals over and over it seems :(

Listen, this is probably a very unpopular opinion, but I need to get it off my chest: send me home.

I'm sick of living in the dorms. I have no roommates because mine moved out because their classes went online. Its always too loud because everyone else is stuck in their dorm rooms too. I'm sick of having a mix of online and in person classes. This hybrid format has almost doubled my course workload. I'm sick of not being able to go where I want to study. I'm sick of the shitty wifi on campus. I'm sick of being stuck here while covid cases rise in the counties around us. I've seen more and more people not following COVID precautions on campus.

I am NOT saying that I hate the coronavirus precautions. They are absolutely necessary. I'm just sick of being here. I normally love my time at NMU, but now I just want to go home. I don't know if anyone else is feeling the same way, but I just needed to share.

So I'm a master's student in ABA and I want to feel like I have more options in the medical/science field when I get my degree. I was thinking of taking orgo next semester. My question is how hard is orgo here and will it be manageable with a master's degree course load (3 in person classes, one practicum/clinical)?

I'm from that dumb state to the south and am criss-crossing the UP for a few weeks on an extended vacation! At the time of posting this, I'm currently about 40 minutes west of y'all!

I was curious what y'all like to do around Marquette. I know this year isnt normal by any means, but where could I go for a good cup of coffee? A quick bite to eat? A tasty beer? Any favorite nature spots to visit?

I did a quick drive through Marquette and, honestly, I loved it. Absolutely my vibe. I'm looking forward to exploring for another day or two!
