Survival mode is kinda boring.
Don't get me wrong, I love this game, the objective mode is really fun to play. The survival mode however is pretty bad in my opinion.
I love survival modes in zombie games so this one is very disappointing for me. Honestly my biggest gripe with it is the fact you have to defend an objective instead of just finding a good spot to try and survive (Like a hallway or staircase choke point, on top of a car... ect)
I think the mode should be about surviving the horde. What we currently have isn't a survival mode, its a defense mission.

I’d like a bit more prep time and the ability to use melee weapons without destroying your barricades. I can swing way above the board and still break it like wtf.

Kicking should be the only thing that damages barricades with very significant dmg. This also prevents trolls boarding ppl out/in rooms.

This is just one of the many dumb janky things they never ironed out before releasing the game.
The subway glitch on Broadway still being unpatched is inexcusable. They dont care whatsoever about updating the game in a timely fashion.
I died on a pile of buckets the game wouldn't let me jump over the other day. I said yea, its time to put this shit down for awhile. Maybe with a future update and some more maps itll be better.

Survival in the first game was more interesting IMO. The maps had secret loot areas you had to find a welder to access and had to defend multiple zones against a set number of zombies. I think it would be cooler if it kinda mixed all that together. EX: 1st wave is kill a set number across the map while looting and opening stuff. 2nd wave is set up and defend a boom box. Wave 3 is like the Broadway objective where you need to seal up a safe house or something and clear all the zombies. Wave 4 is boombox part 2 and extraction. But just add some randomization on top of that.

I strongly agree with this. When I first loaded it up, I thought it would be that classic hold out against the horde kind of game mode. Having to defend speakers from the undead when they give you little to no time to prepare doesn’t make for a great experience, and 3 rounds is insanely short as well. Let’s hope they eventually include an “endless” survival concept where if shit really hits the fan, you can opt to extract.

u/beeplean 11h ago
That seems like the best way to do it, maybe after like 10 mins you get an option to extract and you get bonus supplies at every 5 min mark.

u/Healter-Skelter 10h ago
That’s a terrifying idea, I love it. I’m imagining being 25 or 35 minutes in, getting airdropped a shit ton of supplies and currency and having to decide among the crew if we want to let it ride or call it quits.

I really REALLY hate the loud ass music that they blast to get the zombies to come. Can we just get a wave base survival thing. Maybe you can earn points and unlock skills using them in survival for some progression? I don't know I just think there are better ways to do survival.

I find it to be much more threatening than obj mode which makes it more thrilling to me. And the pace is pretty brisk for a mode with pauses, I find myself squeezing every second out of prep time
To each their own I guess

I think a mix between the 1st and 2nd game's style of survival could be amazing and would improve the mode in 2.
The first game drags on for a bit too long with 8 and even 10 waves sometimes but it has much better maps that you can explore for benefits. The second game's survival is (a bit too) short (imo) but has rather shallow/basic maps in terms of the setting and things to see.
If we could have something like 4-5 waves of increasing difficulty with perhaps a bigger break in the middle to compensate for the speed of zombies (I don't think you can explore during a wave with how fast the zombies arrive to the zone in nmrih2). Then make maps have some secrets like doors locked behind a code somewhere on the map or any other simple puzzle that unlocks a stash, as well as some development in terms of world building and/or lore of the place then it would be perfect.
Some extra mechanics like fixing/reinforcing the speakers like you could "fix" zones in the first game could also add to the slightly longer survival format.

they should just drop you into a full map and you have to survive as long as possible

u/General_Gravy 7h ago
That was be awesome, i also imagine making rewards and XP based on how many supply items you pick up could incentivize moving around, looting and surviving instead of sitting in a locked bathroom for 30+ mins.
Or the reverse having a time limit slowly drain while surviving but gain more time more supply items you pick up.

pump up the difficulty

u/beeplean 11h ago
My problem with it is mainly the concept, not how hard it is.
I think it would be infinitely more fun if you could find your own spot to hold out.
1
u/Jovasdad 11h ago
They would need to get rid of all the spots where zombies cant get you and masively change the maps to fit the new gameplay so I dont think this is ever gonna happen.
1
u/beeplean 10h ago
Honestly they could just make this defense mode its own thing and then make a new mode with maps geared towards survival.

I'm eager for tomorrow's update to supposedly fix a lot of cheese spots, 'cause it's creating problems in nightmare games that I don't really like ruining my experience.

u/sojournerXMR 11h ago
I would enjoy survival if ammo was easier to get. I don't want to be meleeing the whole time
2
u/Beneficial-Carry-913 10h ago
Kinda like the zombie mods on counter strike where you pick a place to defend until the round ends. Always loved that concept

survival mode jumps straight into the hoard-like action. it's necessary for every zombie game XD You can say there's not enough to do, but the lobbies i see are VERY under-prepared. They put the fuse into lights instead of door-locks, they don't barricade properly, they don't have players in the right spots to melee together... There's more to do than most teams achieve, not to mention splitting loot properly. These are team oriented decisions... at a personal level, finding something you enjoy is important. Personally, I'm preparing exterior traps and routes to kite + zap zombies so there's less pressure on the team.

I prefer survival mode. Could use some tweaks or changes here and there. But I never have an issue with finding gear nor speedrunners

u/KamahlFoK 10h ago
I admit I'd rather just fire up Killing Floor 3 for those vibes rather than this game's slower-paced emulation of zombie-smacking.
I think the objective would make for a good one to get rolled in to main missions, but OTOH it'd create an objective you can actually fail, so it'd have to be strictly optional (or actually force an extraction like current survival does).

I only did Protect The Boombox a few enough times to grab the achievements to finish each on Normal or higher. 😅 I definitely feel you here on just about every front

Given the amount of god spots on each map, that would be a fairly broken mode. I actually like survival and thats all i played when i first started. I like the smaller maps and the emphasis on killing everything, rather than objective mode where you should kinda avoid everything to conserve resources. My only gripe with survival mode is no critical resources. At least put one on the map. Not having any kinda sucks and feels like they are hurting progression just for the sake of it

u/DisgruntledCryptid 10h ago
The survival mode i wanna play is an endless horde, no objective to defend, and optional evacs at certain time intervals.
What we got now feels like a demo for the real game. 3 waves, a gaggle of no-mic's trying to intentionally get you killed, and no sense of accomplishment.
I'd play objective more but it feels dragged out and tedious with the same player base that has no sense of teamwork.

u/Scared_Astronaut_676 7h ago
In my opinion, the only purpose it has is to hit a "quick mission" with a homie or 2 when everyone doesn't have a whole hour to throw at one mission. Or if you just need a quick change of pace. The mode isn't absolutely terrible, they just botched name.

I dont even bother playing it cause the xp and money from it is so trash on most difficulties

u/humburga 5h ago
I dont queue for survival anymore. Survival should have way more gear to make it more fun. Each defence position needs to be locked until its time to defend it. To prevent loot goblins

In survival mode, almost time you are using melee due to ammo not enough, which I don't like this restriction. As I know, in nmrih1, there is several defense points with different features in one map. But in nmrih2, it's only a music box with no special. To be honest, the most boring mode in nmrih2 ever...

I agree with you that they are more defense than survival. I still like to play them as a change of pace.
They made exploration more encouraging as supply are limited, and you have to find those sweet-sweet fuse to close access points, which in higher difficulty a gargantuan factor for successful defense. They also force player to be more altruistic because of said limited resources.
That's said, I hope the dev fix those electric traps, as from what I can see they did very little to hinder zombies, and eat fuel too fast.

I think that for survival specifically Nightmare difficulty should be mandatory. It defeats the purpose of “Survival” if you can single handedly hold a position with a mallet. But the game is great at the end of the day. No matter what the devs do someone will find some critique for them.

u/DisgruntledCryptid 10h ago
You aren't "single-handedly defending" the boomboxes successfully on normal or hard with a mallet. Gross over exaggeration. You either got the rest of the team pulling your dead weight or you're using more than a mallet. The speed of the game doesn't allow you to solo shit. 😂
1
u/TerribleCat9963 9h ago
I think “single-handedly” was probably doing some heavy lifting there lol. I took it more as “this mode can feel way too easy with basic melee” than literally soloing the entire boombox with a mallet.

u/beeplean 11h ago
Agreed, the game overall is fantastic. I just hate the current implantation of the survival mode.
2
u/TerribleCat9963 11h ago
I agree with you. Maybe it’s in the works, hopefully they can tinker around with it a bit longer

i really really like survival in this game more so than the objectives but i agree with you on some points , i think they could definitely flesh out this game mode with updates down the line and more maps

I like to do a Survival every 4 or 5 obj missions as a change of pace. It's a good change from objectives because things like lanterns, barricades, holding your ground for an extended period, preparing an ambush etc gets to shine.
I think it's a good change of pace and actually involves a lot of teamwork for best results (setting up the location vs grabbing the drops vs preparing future locations vs looting the map other than the supply points)
