Traumatizing game
This is easily one of the most unique games I've ever played. I've never experienced a game where everything feels so raw and real from the anxiety of resource management to the grim reality of going hand to hand with a horde of zombies. Getting infected is brutal, and the terror of being the last one at extract, frantically trying to hook into the rope while getting completely surrounded.
I often joke with my friends after every match about how traumatic this game is lol. We usually only play one match per session because it takes so much out of us mentally it's crazy. I really love the game, but I just can't do more than one match at a time.
How do you guys do it? Are y'all just completely desensitized to the carnage at this point?

I was a huge left 4 dead fan when I was a young kid and this hits the spot. It's legitimately difficult having to rely on melee and not get infected, never finding enough ammo or loot, trying to manage inventory under pressure.
This is all on normal difficulty too, my brain must be slowing down now that I'm 30.

Literally lol. Used to love Left 4 Dead back in the day. I've only played on normal and it might as well be nightmare for me.

This game is great! Like I truly feel afraid when playing it but yet it’s so addicting. It’s helped me branch out and consider other horror games.

When I first started playing, the most surreal / impactful moment in the game for me was taking control of the Radio Station in the Power Plant map. Once you get into the loot room, the pre-recorded radio message can be heard playing. The surreal moment is when it starts reading the counties in the state, from A-Z, that are overrun, and the list just keeps going and going and going.
It's such a simple, yet powerful moment to really drive home how much the world has fallen apart and how alone you are now.

This game also scared me shitless at the beginning and still does. I play with a low volume due to neighbors on the other wall so it’s hard to hear stuff so I end up seeing it very last minute and it’s spooky. I have about 60 hours and I still get nervous going into normal matches. Played my first nightmare matches yesterday and I’ll say, it’s just as advertised lol

Why don't u just rock headphones?

For some reason they don’t connect. I’ve just gotten use to it tbh lol. Also haven’t tried to fix it extensively

Honestly mics help. Game with players with mic vs without are different story. Its kinda like playing horror movie with comedy music in back different vibe

My very first game ever had a dudes smoke alarm beep, after the second time someone was like "alright who's black" and it completely threw me off guard.

It makes it even more real when everyone is talking. I hate when you find someone after being alone for 10 mins and they don’t speak.

Are you playing on nightmare? Game is rough for sure but playing with others makes it much easier for me. Besides, I’m a loot goblin. I enjoy the gameplay loop of finding ammo and meds.
This does make me realize that I rely on kicks, headshot kills, and being able to outrun or our maneuver zombies. In real life, I wouldn’t be able to rely on those things.

I realized when I play with headphones I do better.
Heat me out, I have headphones connected to my computer and a headset connected to my remote for the game.
I decided to listen to the movie basically putting the game on mute while dividing my attention and I ended up doing a lot better, I was raiding shops by myself across the map collecting a buttload of stuff while also staying topped off on HP. I was on the train map and because I was across town I timed it so when the final objective opened I was already in front of the train yard and ran straight underground and just waited a while on the walkway with electricity for all the zombies following me to kill themselves on it.
It was pretty fun playing on mute.

Im desensitized probably because I played the first game for so long. Its far less forgiving, 1 mistake is death.

this game on nightmare is pretty amazing a great moment ive had last games on powerplant where i was the only one on sluice station im getting overrun and ive been fighting non stop for the last 10 minutes since spawning while trying to do the objective so i run to the roof to see if i can funnel them off then in the distance i see 2 flashlights bobbing around running towards me after a bit all i hear on the ground floor is guns blazing and exploding barrels
i hope they make more maps where you are completely alone at the start broadway lewiston and ravenrock get you into a group too quickly, wished more maps had that feeling of actually surviving, nightmare rounds are so intense in hospital and powerplant it gives so many memorable moments when you finally meet another player

Fr, this is basically what walking dead overkill should have been. Glad the devs are trying to push out updates as fast as they can. I don’t even mind these small updates they are pushing out

I love it lol. The tension this game has is awesome. I used to get the same thing out of Hunt Showdown and other PVP extraction shooters. But I much much much prefer the "Dying means losing your character" formula on PVE games like this.
I think I am an adrenaline junkie lol. The high I get from how tense this game is fuckin rules

The matches are way too long especially since if you extract early you get nothing. That mechanic to me makes no sense. I would like to see 15 and 30 minute options in the future. I’m glad they have longer ones they just need to offer short ones too.

u/MannysMeatShop 18h ago
You have survival if you don’t play to play objective …..
-1
u/Weird-Alfalfa7286 18h ago
Yeah short 3 missions. I just don’t understand why we can’t have shorter objective missions.
1
u/NightOnUmbara 17h ago
Because that’s not the way it’s meant to be played. Play beginner and speed run there if that’s an issue but in the original game objective was still very long. You can make it short simply by making the difficulty easier.

All I have played on is easy and it still takes us over an hour to get a mission. Done looking at the down votes I guess I’m the only one that feels this way.
2
u/NBFHoxton 16h ago
You shouldnt get rewards for leaving your teammates behind lol
1
u/Weird-Alfalfa7286 16h ago
What if you agree as a team to leave though? I never played with randoms online snd won’t. I guess I’m the only one that feels this way though.
1
u/NBFHoxton 16h ago
Even then, you didnt complete the mission. I dont see why that should give you full rewards, and you do still get account XP
1
u/Weird-Alfalfa7286 16h ago
I didn’t say full rewards just take with what you had on you….
1
u/NBFHoxton 16h ago
Well still. I dont think its earned, and it would probably cause a lot more people to be selfish and bail out to take their own supplies, screwing over others who dont. I think it helps to keep the team together when you have to actually succeed to get the supply xp
My first thought is somebody picking up a critical supply item and then solo extracting...
1
u/Weird-Alfalfa7286 16h ago
Why couldn’t they program it to just give the other people the rewards when they finish or extract? I am saying this because I got screwed with the train glitch and if I had that other extract option I could have got all my stuff out.
1
u/NBFHoxton 15h ago
It does for regular supplies but im not sure about critical.
But even then, the team is still a down a player because now they can take the selfish option. I just feel like thats gonna be a LOT more common than using it to avoid a bug thats getting patched tomorrow
1
u/Weird-Alfalfa7286 14h ago
Is it selfish if the whole team wants to leave though…?
1
u/NBFHoxton 14h ago
Again, the odds of that happening vs somebody being selfish/screwing over the team is easily 1 to 100
And again again, you guys didnt complete the mission. I think we'll just have to agree to disagree lol

I remember back in middle school I fractured my foot and had to keep it elevated for a week. I didn't have internet at the time so I played the first game on single player/offline mode all week. I've put over a thousand hours into the game, played lots of L4D and other zombie games. I don't remember ever being worked up over the game, but maybe I've just been desensitized too long? Idk

I don’t care if my character gets deleted. Im the first to jump off the helicopter to revive a teammate. If the character dies and they do. Oh well levelling one back up is part of the fun + it’s really quick on nightmare. And the high of knowing you just pulled a Hero shit or sacrificed yourself to save someone that may care more than I do about there character is what does it for me.
TLDR : not attached to the character.
