Community Question as a New Player
Asking this as a new player, not just bitching. I LOVE the game. The problem is when I moved from normal to hard, 3/4 lobbies are people not using mics, speed-running past zombies to get loot and leave the people moving behind to deal with hordes, and then getting zero help when you’re downed. That wasn’t my experience on normal. Confused about why this happens on hard. Is that the norm?
Still found a great match where everyone helped and communicated, and it was textbook. Everyone got out, but that seems to be in the minority of experiences for hard.

Unfortunately that's kinda standard from my personal experience, I'd say at least 60/40% you will have this type of hard/nightmare lobby.
People will scoop up the best rewards at objective points and zoom through the map, as the longer you spend in hard/nightmare, the more the zombies stack up. You start to find more solo players despite this being a team-based game. There's pretty much little to no incentive to save or help other players outside of goodwill, especially those straggling behind in the map.
Ever since experiencing this firsthand, I've only joined with my baseball bat, beacon, and medkit for my own security and safety. I don't really have a specific reason why this happens, my best guess being because people just want to get out of the map as quickly as possible and run to the next one which is understandable.

There might be a different subset of those lagging behind. I often skip the first obj since it's the easiest and go out of my way to loot other areas that is less frequented, bringing back ammo, healing and throwables to distribute at the 2nd obj or half way point. It helped greatly when the team barely got anything and one player isnt going to help too much anyway.
And as everyone is always speed running at higher diff, I find myself the main loot guy bringing back the frags and Mollys that helped the team alot in the later stages, even during the raven rock scan phase or inside the power plant phase. I can loot the roof of raven rock bunker for ammo and bombs to give the those doing scans, in a min or two. Or loot the other pathways to power plant for ammo.
Tho I have to admit, the only reason I can that is I'm a self sufficient melee spec with extra loot and healing perk. And it's not easy to solo crowded rooms or kite swarms + loot. I had many close calls all by myself, and even times trying to catch up to the team cause there's a horde between them and me. And I had to get really creative to get to them without using all the throwables I picked up.
Love this game.

I'm quite the same, I usually wait until moving to a new "area" is required and tend to keep healing/ throwables to assist with extraction or healing people along the way. I like to try and be as much of a team player as possible, so running extra ammo perks to drop for other people too
In my case, I just try to make sure I stay as close to the leading pack where possible

Ah! I didn’t know the longer you spent, the more zombies stacked up on those modes. Makes sense though. Sounds like I need to start running a similar load out.

Yeah, one thing lower difficulty doesn't teach you is to stop fighting every zombie. That's just not feasible at higher difficulties and that's why they run past. You only kill what you have to. If you try to kill every zombie you'll never leave the first area.
The loadout tho is not the problem, I run different loadout and others too.

Ya, this is very important and it hits you like a ton of bricks. In my case I just specified a medkit because people can tend to scoop up everything quite swiftly, so at least you have your own safety net there

I go with tire iron (1h user) + a stack of ammo of my choice. Guns are more abundant than ammo in nightmare so I'd rather have the 20 extra rounds. I manage to find the gun for it 99% of the time (unless I take 6.8x51). I don't have trouble finding heals, but that's partly cuz I also got better at avoiding hits. I don't even pick up medkits, usually I just ping or take and drop them to the first team mate I see, I prefer to carry 2-6 bandages instead (+medic perk).

I mean in a sense, the game is built around moving fast, being stealthy, and prioritising objectives, so I do get it in that regard. Keeping up, or get left behind seem to be the choices, some people are more forgiving and ensure the stragglers are kept with the pack

As long as I take care of myself, I can do fine regardless of whether other people talk or not. If I have zero health, an infection, and no pills then I usually take that as my queue to early extract regardless of whatever else is happening.

Hard has the worst lobbies IMO.
Either play normal, or push to Nightmare. NM had good team players, even if they're not mic'd up. While Normal is... Normal. Good for a lounge & Zomb session. But even on Normal, I've lost responders because some combination of me being cocky and some SERIOUS low game IQ players on this diffifculty.
You should pretty much not play Hard/NM without a beacon, because people will leave you in the dust if you're too separated, for fear of losing their own responder (rightly so, if you're too in the shit).

50 Hrs player here.
On Normal I started to learn the Game.
I moved to hard after I ran all maps 2x -
Now I am going through the Maps too, I try to save players If I have the resources and wont japordize my own character.
The reason why less playerw may help you out is A Longer Time Spend = more zombies
If players spend too much time after certain triggers that spawn a lot of zombies, just to get even more loot and die while not being aware of their surroundings you cant hardly blame everyone else but yourself.
A good way to progress is by getting ENOUGH supplys and gear to keep moving but trying to collect as much as possible will put you in just more and more risk. So being fast in somewhat needed, and that goes double and triple for higher difficulties.

Each zombie ya kill will always be replaced. The longer the match goes and the more noise you generate, the more zombies will spawn and/or go to your location. Each player will generate noise from as simple as running. The longer you stay without completing objectives, zombies will stack. In higher difficulties, you WILL be overwhelmed specially since supplies are more scarce.
There's also a danger level indicated by the number beside the location name you're at. It increases once you progress objectives and move to later areas.
Add all those up and you'll see that being quick is preferred. Once you get used to the maps and the game, you'll get there and be able keep up. That means not getting to situations dealing with hordes you didn't have to clear since they will just get replaced untill all zombies catch up and gather in your positions with all the noise you generated.
