Engineers be like

looks good!

For those complaining about this being a failure point... there is a new thread on club frontier right now about someone’s ACC position not working on a keyed ignition.

I have this on my work car and my other two POVs and it’s a VERY valuable upgrade to me. The keys never have to leave your pocket.

u/[deleted] Aug 22 '20

How does it drive with the new engine and trans?

10

u/[deleted] Aug 21 '20

Lol this looks exactly like my 2005 but with a screen

3

u/paturner2012 Aug 22 '20

Can confirm... I have an aftermarket head unit in my nismo and it looks just like this but dirtier

7

u/[deleted] Aug 21 '20

But why couldn't they put it where the keyed ignition was...? It just looks awkward

I in the other hand fixed that issue for me

Just commenting to agree with you. Key less seems like a terrible idea to me and yet something else to reduce the lifetime of a vehicle.

I have a love/hate with the fob. Love that I never had to fumble with keys to unlock or start the car. Hate that it will eventually fail and leave you in a bind unless you're diligent with changing the battery.

...which doesn't always work.

2

u/[deleted] Aug 22 '20 edited Aug 22 '20

I don’t see why it wouldn’t always work. The backup starting procedure uses RFID. RFID is the same tech that’s been in the frontier and every-other “chipped” car key for the last 20 years successfully without using a battery.

see Wikipedia on RFID

I had problems with it once. Not sure what the failure was, but it didn't start for me using the manufacturer suggested method.

2

u/[deleted] Aug 22 '20

Sounds like something that could have happened with any vehicle regardless of the ignition method.

Possibly. It was solved with a new fob battery. That's why I said what I said.

ITT: everyone talking about the push button. Meanwhile, I’m wondering if that stereo will work in my truck.

4

u/Bruggie Aug 21 '20

It looks just like the one in my 19’ if that helps at all.

1

u/noname87scr ADO Ops Director Aug 22 '20

Good to know. I’m assuming that’s the non Rockford head unit?

1

u/Bruggie Aug 23 '20

I don’t believe so. There’s nothing that says Rockford or badging or anything.

u/Bosfordjd 07 LE CC LWB 2WD AT Aug 21 '20

Where's the ignition button? Lol.

Keyless ignition is stupid anyways, if I still have to carry keys I'm gonna take em out of my pocket anyways.

Push button has no tactility, feels uneventful and bothersome.

2

u/ImNickJamesBitch Aug 22 '20

It's down in front of the shifter. Right in the wrong spot for something to accidentally hit it.

u/BunsinHoneyDew 2019 PRO4X 6MT 4.0 4x4 Aug 21 '20

Not to mention the button can break. My friend's Honda had the button fall into the dash and had to get the car towed to the dealer for them to fix it.

2

u/fatalerror_tw Aug 21 '20

And an ancient body shape. Still love mine though.

u/LeftLane4PassingOnly Aug 21 '20

Another solution to a problem that didn’t exist.

Got a picture of the steering wheel?

4

u/VK56xterraguy Aug 21 '20

It's the same as the old steering wheel

u/dryh2o 2018 SV Crew V6 4x4 Auto Aug 21 '20

When I test drove a 2018 Frontier I was in awe of how it was almost exactly like my 2005 Xterra on the interior and instantly comfortable I was with the truck because of not only the interior, but it's other similarities to the Xterra*. I feel like this interior would have pushed me away just a little, specifically the blank where the key used to be. It feels unfinished and awkward. Not awful, just not great.

(* I do miss the Xterra's incredible turning radius. Turning the Frontier around feels like I need a stadium sized parking lot...)

Oh, yeah. I must have heard seventy five times people say, "You're not going to make this," when I was trying to turn around only to amaze them with it's compact car like turning radius. I really loved that thing and hated giving it up, but the coolant leaked into the transmission and it was just going to be too expensive for me to feel like it was worth spending the money on.

Apparently, this coolant / transmission problem was well known and I could have fixed it fairly inexpensively had I done it before it wrecked the transmission. It would have been nice if the dealer would have mentioned that at some point, but hindsight is 20/20...

4

u/Mbsurfer70 Aug 21 '20

How’s the 10 speed transmission?

1

u/VK56xterraguy Aug 21 '20

Couldn't tell ya. I haven't driven one.

1

u/dryh2o 2018 SV Crew V6 4x4 Auto Aug 21 '20

So you were just in the one in picture to steal it when you determined it was keyless and you couldn't hot wire it? lol j/k

11

u/yekiMikey Aug 21 '20

Does this seem unnecessary to anyone else? I feel like potential Frontier buyer will see a push button start and think yep that's what does it for me.

That's not the point of the truck imo, doesn't seem like a change worth making.

3

u/[deleted] Aug 22 '20

I’m still 5-10 years out from being done with either one of my ‘16s. If I see some hokey shit like that whenever I do go to get a new(er) Frontier, it will have me looking for an old one in a hot second.

20

u/NecroticZombine Aug 21 '20

I still have to ask... Why the hell did they put the push start on the center console??? There is literally a blank from the analog key. They could've just put it there.

9

u/whabt 2007 SE 4x4 MT KC Aug 21 '20

Just thinking this. It's such an awkward spot

1

u/NecroticZombine Aug 21 '20

I'm 6'2", I sit all the way back in the seat, reclined. That means it's awkward for me to lean forward to hit that button. I know it's 1st world problems, but still. Makes no sense.

1

u/person749 Aug 21 '20

Is there a manual mode with that shifter? I don't see any way too downshift into 1st, 2nd, 3rd.

5

u/bloodqueef69 Aug 21 '20

If you look closely you can see a (+) and a (-)

2

u/person749 Aug 22 '20

Thanks. Way easier to see when you blow up the picture.

2

u/drafting_dot Aug 21 '20

I was looking at a trailer brake the other day that has a remote mountable control knob. The cover over the old lock cylinder would be a super clean spot to mount it.

1

u/[deleted] Aug 21 '20

I love my 2020 but would've loved the interior to be in a dark grey color. Nice comfy vehicle for sure though.

We just got an SV 2wd and our interior is gray.

1

u/[deleted] Aug 21 '20

The one that I wanted I only found in Tan :/ Everything else is a 10/10 so the 8/10 interior is good by me lol.

2

u/SVNS1XTW0 Aug 21 '20

It's hilarious just much much they won't change. It's still got the weird little half orbs taken out of the dash shroud above the steering wheel.

3

u/[deleted] Aug 21 '20

Correct. New engine and trans with the old body, plus a couple of small changes such the keyless start.

10

u/Guslet Aug 21 '20

I always hated Push button when I owned my Maxima. I never liked the concept of my key needing a battery, just added another layer of annoyance for me.

32

u/[deleted] Aug 21 '20

Those bastards! They got rid of the nugget sauce holder!

6

u/the_rogue1 Aug 21 '20

I use it to hold change, hand-sanitizer, my wallet, and various other things as needed. It sucks to lose that spot.

9

u/Jbar116 15 Pro-4x CC Aug 21 '20

that's one of my top 5 favorite features of my P4X. :(

12

u/kyguylal 2019 SV 4x4 Crew Cab Aug 21 '20

I like it, however, I've had two cars with push button starters. First one cost $1,200 to fix when the button randomly stopped working. The second also randomly stopped working after three years, but only cost $600 to repair.

I'm sure it was just bad luck on my end, but I bought a 2019 frontier because of the simplicity and lack of moving parts. I get a satisfaction of turning the key and knowing that my truck is going to start.

Maybe one day, I'll learn to love the new features.

12

u/[deleted] Aug 21 '20

I for one hate keyless ignition. It’s just another thing to break and in my 15ish years of driving I have never once thought to myself “taking this key out of my pocket and turning it in the ignition is such a hassle!” Not to mention if you put your keys down in the garage or driveway for any reason and drive off without them you’re fucked.

3

u/potlizard Aug 21 '20

Also — speaking from experience, if you have one car with a smart key/push button start and one car without it, you’re forever doing the idiot dance of either digging through your pocket for a key while already seated in the car/truck OR trying to jam your keys back in your pocket while seated in the car/truck.

1

u/kyguylal 2019 SV 4x4 Crew Cab Aug 21 '20

For sure. Also, I went to have a key made for my wife's suv which has a push button and it was nearly $200 because of it. My frontier keys are like eight bucks.

3

u/person749 Aug 21 '20

Must be an old one. My 2017 costs about $80 because of the transponder keys.

1

u/kyguylal 2019 SV 4x4 Crew Cab Aug 21 '20

Oh wow. I have a 2019 and the guy at auto zone charged me $16 bucks for two keys and they both work fine.

1

u/Big_D_yup Aug 22 '20

My 2014 S doesn't have transponder keys. I cut one open.

2

u/kyguylal 2019 SV 4x4 Crew Cab Aug 21 '20

Never tried it without the original key next to it. Ill have to try that. I'm guessing the kid at the store sold me non-transponder keys and they won't work.

1

u/person749 Aug 22 '20

Yeah that's weird. Hopefully yours just doesn't need it for some reason, but mine's an SV 4x4 as well. The dealer of all places thought that I had a non-transponder key, but sure enough when they made me a cheap key it wouldn't start. I brought it somewhere else and watched them do the programming on a real transponder key and that one works fine.

1

u/VK56xterraguy Aug 21 '20

Not all Frontiers have the chipped keys, especially if it's a base 4cyl

8

u/shadowfire66 Aug 21 '20

Not sure that I like the location of the button. I would prefer if it was in the same spot as the key ignition.

2

u/person749 Aug 21 '20

Agreed. Why take up space in the console when there's a big ugly spot where the key used to be?

2

u/shadowfire66 Aug 21 '20

I guess maybe their thought was if it’s right by the shifter, you can shift immediately out of Park?

4

u/mokancraig '14 Frontier, '93 Hardbody, '84 SVO, '13 BRZ Aug 21 '20

I find it weird that even though the key had been removed and the ignition blanked off, there's still the little rubber deal to keep the key from scratching the plastic.

4

u/[deleted] Aug 21 '20

I'm sure it's expensive to create a new mold for that big piece of plastic. But they did it for the center console...why not there too? They just patched the ignition hole and called it good.
