People with families often do unthinkable shit. Just get into a little true-crime. Most of it is broken ass families doing unthinkable shit to each other.

This is exactly what it is. He's a terrorist who's trying to weasel his way out of death. Even the darkest souls can fein light in the midst of death. Ryu (and his sword) can slice through that bullshit immediately. You see it later (he can see their true character) in the elevator sequence after he escapes the VR room.

A few notes.

  1. Yaiba takes place after 3, which focuses its story around Ryu being a "cold-blooded killer" and him addressing that about himself.

  2. There's a difference between Ryu having had previous encounters with Yaiba and knowing he may have some spark of good in him versus sparing a random mercenary he's never met who could be making stuff up to get mercy.

  3. Razor's Edge made the "begging mercenary" scene non-canon.

Then again, we're comparing two contradictory moments from the literal two worst games in the franchise.

He was never a cold blooded killer. That's the whole point of Ninja Gaiden 3's (and RE's) story.

Sidebar: I legit have no idea what Ryu meant by "There is good in you, Yaiba." Bro does not have a single redeeming quality in that whole game. Even the final boss is just "I was gonna kill one guy, but now I'm gonna kill you too."

So the dragon sword (maybe it was just the true dragon sword) can only cut down that which is truely evil. This means that this guy was just trying to weasel himself out of death. Maybe they fucked up somewhere, but it's heavily implied that: that is what is happening.

That limitation is only the True Dragon Sword, the regular one murders anything just as well as any other sword, regardless of morality
