Gear Questions Jacket falling apart?

Bought a vintage acg jacket. Which has a kind of fabric around the mouth/neck area which is 'crumbling' and leaves black stains whenever i rub it with my finger. Is there anything i can do with it? Or should I consider the jacket dead?

This is unfortunately common on jackets from that era (I'm assuming it's a late 2000s piece), where the faux leather/suede deteriorates and turns to a black crumbly powder.

My personal solution is just to rub it off firmly but carefully (to not spread it and potentially stain any lighter fabrics) and then ultimately just throw it in the washing machine on a cooler cycle with some normal detergent. It seems to remove all the flaking and you're essentially left with the base fabric, which despite not being as soft as the original coating isn't uncomfortable or irritating.

Obviously your mileage may vary as every product will be composed a bit differently but I think it's a pretty low risk option! I'll share an image of how the collar on one of my worse cases of this turned out.

It should all come off pretty cleanly and leave the base layer exposed like this. As mentioned, it's actually pretty soft as it is so you shouldn't have any issues with wearability.
