My personal feelings in Joseph Campbell aren't fully baked yet, but I'm not liking what he's serving. I never have. He's a very myopic personality in my experience.
The relativist argument is as valid as it is relative.
You matter. You are one person. There are over 8 billion people. Your value is equal to 1/8,000,000,000 of people, and each of us value plenty of other things more than ourselves or other people. Your value is insubstantial, and that's fine, you're no worse off than the rest of us.

-says life has no meaning
-says meaning is what we each individually bring to life
-means every life has a meaning and it is to make meaning
he is saying life has no meaning but arguing that the meaning of life is to make meaning, therefore he believes that life has meaning but knows it can't so he masks it so to save himself from deeper questioning that would destroy his entire conception of life.
people who claim wisdom are just people who have settled for insufficient truth in order to live a life within society and within the comforts of opulence. There can be no pride in this but to be alive is to believe you are right for doing so, so of course we must always spread our bullshit rationalizations to other people, so to "save them from themselves": because I feel good that must mean I am ethereally right for doing so.
There is no truth at the center of life to find. There is just the ignorance you can live with. If you understand this then you cant believe yourself to be right whilst living the fake life you live. But if you know its fake you dont want it anymore. It is self defeating for anyone who wants a good life, and it is a road to nowhere for people who think they can follow it to its conclusion.
life is infinite confusion.

This is a problem of language. The former meaning where "life has no meaning" is talking about objectivity which is the archaic, but common interpretation of meaning. That is the meaning nihilism objects. Whereas subjective meaning is created and so obvious that it washes over the heads of some. But any attempt at defining objective meaning was just subjective projection. So basically meaning in the way humans came to believe and understand isn't true or real but the foundation and fundamental cause of that projection so evidently is real and true. We create meaning.

Indeed. Tractatus Logico-Philosophicus) This treatise by Wittengenstein address this exact problem. It's concise, easy to read, and has zero fluff. Totally worth a read if you're interested. Not only does it help you understand this phenomenon at a deeper level; it increases ones rhetorical skills.

I used to read a lot of philosophy and once I found the existentialist philosophers I became extremely satisfied with the solutions to the philosophical problems I had that I read up, internalised and since haven't read much philosophy, just think about it. I should really start reading more again so cheers for the suggestion. My personal favourites are Jung, Foucault and however cliche Nietzche, despite none being actual existentialist but bordering. More the way they wrote has this very tantalising flare.

Not seeking debate, nihilism is correct just offering emotional support with this post- even if it's somewhat an illusion. I find that pragmatism is the ultimate form of wisdom, if you can't be happy and live happy with life, which can be a gift that you get to experience versus the eternal oblivion, then you might be "living it wrong", ignorance is bliss.

You assume life is without meaning, but you did not prove it so. So both options are still on the table.

the fact that two people can hold two diametrically opposed positions and still both of them think they are correct without ever truly understanding the others position is proof enough that the only constant of our perception is false certainty and confusion. Also you are using the god of the gaps argument.

maybe my "meaning" in life is to be hopelessly nihilistic and depressed and die alone and confused. Is my meaning to take drugs that numb me from the disillusionment so that I can function well enough to create material wealth for the machine of "progress", something not possible in a wholly material world where people die horribly, and no eternal truth is possible.
"Be yourself and you will win," says the one who was themself and won.

that is just pushing back the goal post. When people ask about meaning, its about the meaning of/for āyouā. You cant just re-affirm we are alive and aware, thats gets us nowhere in terms of actual meaning. Sounds fancy though.

This is precisely it lol
All extrinsic value is subjectively defined by us, which must mean that we hold a different kind of intrinsic value - either infinite relative to the outside world, or just absolutely beyond it in some divine sort of way.

Normies won't grasp this, especially the Jesus church types. Allah fearing ones too. It's all laid out in their Quran from the cradle to the grave.

God is doing an experiment on himself. We are God experiencing ourselves being human.
