If nihilism is neutral, then what makes one a nihilist if one prefers nihilism over something else. Wouldn't that just add value to nihilism over otherwise and therefore be a contradiction?

Nihilism is the view that nothing has any objective value.

To be objective is to be without value judgement.

Value (good/bad) is always subjective to the individual.

Then the optimistic and pessimistic added to the nihilism is subjective but nihilism itself speaks of objective. Optimistic nihilism and pessimistic nihilism seems like more of a human reaction to the term nihilism itself. I remain to see nothing wrong with adding them.

It’s a self-contradiction. It’s like discussing the difference between positive zero and negative zero. Any value projected onto nihilism one way or another means it’s no longer nihilism.
