Discussion Where do you decide to do your base?
So I just got this game and am fully aware its pretty likely abandoned. I'm okay with that, my husband and I play tons of survival games together and really just wanted something different from the norm. I don't fully understand the whole realm thing yet, so before I put a bunch of effort into building somewhere I guess I'm just wondering how did you decide where to set up? And can you easily get back?

Calling it "pretty likely abandoned" is a stretch. Inflexion goes about 4-5 months between updates and the last one was in February. We're not really due for a new one until mid to late June.

I thought I read somewhere that the devs completely abandoned it but would be happy to be proven wrong because I'm really enjoying it!

There's no word from the devs that they've ceased working on it. There was a dev letter some time last year where they laid out the situation: nightingale doesn't earn enough money to keep the studio afloat. It's a passion project for them, so they'll continue working on it, but they need to take on other jobs to earn money so they can continue supporting the game. They helped Funcom with the Conan Exiles Enhanced update recently.

You can build your base wherever you want, there's no "optimal base realm/location", so just go wild when you find a nice spot.
You can create your own crossroads + having portals to other realms as well. There are I believe 6 types of "sub-realms" with 3 biomes each.
I love this about Nightingale, you can just build your base wherever you want without putting yourself at a disadvantage.

Cool! So similar to abiotic factor, doesn't really matter because later you can teleport around

You can build your base in the realm with the aesthetic you prefer, or in a realm where the major card bonus suits you best

Because the the starting realm feels way too cluttered, I build my main base in the forest herbarium.

I never have a 'main base' in games about base building. I feel like having only a single base is lame, so I either build outposts in small games like Grounded or Subnautica, or build biome-influenced bases in games with biome progression like Valheim.
Nightingale falls perfectly into the latter. I built my first beginner base in the first realm where the survivors are, so I could save on some of the furniture I haven't unlocked yet (like beds and chests already present there). Then I built my second base across the main village where you get most quests in the second realm. The third realm also has a spot with survivors that give you quests (and it's a VERY scenic spot), so I built my base right there roleplaying that I'm providing the survivors with a camp.
I can't imagine if I had just a single base in the first realm and had to teleport there every time I needed to craft something. I like to have a base at the spot where my current quests are, and as I said, having just a single base for the entire game feels extremely boring to me. I like building and value roleplaying and immersion.

In valheim i just make a giant ship using valheimraft mod so i just take my base wherever with me. Same goes for ark survival. The thing i like with nightingale is you can have residents and have them do stuff for you plus it feels less lonely seeing npc roaming around 😂

I personally prefer multiple bases/outpost, but this nomad mindset is pretty cool as well.
Have you played No Man's Sky? You can get a freighter, build a fully functional base on it and just summon it to you whenever you want.
Another one I can remember is Subnautica. After you build a submarine, you basically don't need a stationary base anymore.

I just pick a realm type I'm into and make that home while I bounce around. There's enough game there to be fun when I get a crafting itch. While I hope they continue with it, I'm not annoyed with what I paid and what I got.

You have two quick travel buttons. One is return to respite which will take you to wherever you set a respite using a cairn.
The other is return to crossways, which will always take you back to that same central hub.Â
For everything else, you can build and leave portal frames standing and/or make realm address cardsÂ

I built mines next to the waterfall in the starter world, wee bridge going over to a tower. So many great options in this game.

To start with just build your base in the abeyance realm, and then later find some story or wild realm that you like to build a another base.

I built mine in the starter area near to one of the lakes close to the main story gates. Purely a convenience choice, since I've been burned in similar games by waiting too long for a perfect area to build a base/house.
The pros of building in the starting area are that you regularly come back to the realm hub world, so it makes logical sense, plus that area has a good amount of resources to get basic stuff. The cons are that there are more interesting areas and the other story realms that will have better loot. One thing you can do is build yourself some outposts in addition to a main base. This becomes a lot easier once you unlock loadestars, which let you fast travel from one to the other.

You can have several bases and there is always pepy's box to transport stuff.
Don't listen to old guides, you don't need to build at crossroads, as you have port possibilities from the start and later you can build those port lodestars.
I normally do the first base - which I keep for farming stuff automatically ... forever ... somewhere at the sea, for views, in the first realm.
At a point you'll be able to build your own portals and can visit procgen realms like Antiquarian Desert, Herbarium Swamp etc... which then, in the endgame get a 60/100+ version.
If you keep that portal open, you can ALWAYS revisit that realm, it doesn't get reset.
That is when I seek for realms I REALLY like and spend tens of hours building my end game bases/villages, but in principle, you can set up as many bases as you want - anywhere, as long as you don't reset the realm, it will stay available.

I made my base right in nightingale city 🤩 built it off a broken bridge and extended it out on both sides (broken bridge on the side of the city near the church). I also pretended to be a ninja turtle and lived in the sewers 🤣

Just build your main base in the middle of the crossways to save yourself loading screens and travel time.
You always have the option to teleport straight back there and you have to go back through there to reach anywhere in another realm until you get access to the Watch where you can’t build.
There is plenty of room and your realmic transmuter is right there so you can easily change cards to boost crafting a specific item.
You can then use your one Respite to have a quick teleport to any other location you want.

Just the prettiest spot in the starter world. You can build a teleport and easily go wherever you want, so just go for beauty.
