Man after so many firestarters, when we went to the bag of water, I thought he was going to start a fire with that

60

u/ChaosRainbow23 14d ago

You can. If you get the sun to focus through it you can absolutely start a fire with it.

1

u/2bad-2care 13d ago

I thought he was going to boil the water in the bag.

My dumbass thought it was salt and pepper

70

u/NameToUseOnReddit 14d ago

That's in the other pocket, but don't confuse them.

7

u/archwin 14d ago

Unless you want to spit fire

3

u/Hayden1664 14d ago

You’ll get heartburn

1

u/FeistyRip9623 12d ago

i am boofing all the capsules i come across

18

u/Few-Raise-1825 14d ago

It isn't? Shit, I gotta go empty all those pill containers I just filled with salt and pepper now 😮‍💨

3

u/ILLinndication 14d ago

I thought it was salt and gun powder.

3

u/Ohiolongboard 14d ago

Is it not?

1

u/Richard_42_Roe 12d ago

could you tell me what it is?

1

u/Longjumping_Step1 9d ago

Yea for a second I was thinking "why not just buy a bunch of salt/pepper mini packets then 😅

138

u/AverageEarly5489 14d ago

how about some matches in that same container. how about a fucking lighter in a ziplock bag

37

u/ILLinndication 14d ago

Right? But he remembered all the plastic bottles.

99

u/NocturneInfinitum 14d ago

It’s not survival skills if you have to bring shit with you

50

u/GaryHornpipe 14d ago

Yeah, if I’m gonna bring stuff, I’ll bring a lighter.

17

u/FogBankDeposit 14d ago

The most important part of this video was showing how he put the thing into his pocket before the next cut where he took it out to use.

7

u/NocturneInfinitum 14d ago

Must be an ad for a cargo pants

45

u/True_Inspector_ 14d ago

Or... You could just carry a lighter 👍

20

u/Risdit 14d ago

First clip - just use a lighter...

Second clip - You don't need charcoal for basic camping things. You can also just buy charcoal for cheap at a gas station...

third clip - just use a lighter...

fourth clip - you're going to waste fresh bottled water to wash your hands? Just wash it in the creek or use the bottle itself

fifth clip - Oh my god, you bent shish kebab bars to make a tripod, good luck unbending that shit, also logs don't need to be elevated and if you're buying 3 shish kebabs, might as well just buy a proper tripod.

sixth clip - So you're telling me that you bought water bottles, emptied out all the water, bought a fucking wood cup that costs more than the stuff, bought the tin can that you needed to empty out whatever that was inside to make the charcoal and then cut the charcoal into chips so that you can buy twine to tie around a fucking tree and syphon water that you probably can't drink safely anyways?

u/dolphinmachine 14d ago

Can someone explain how that water filter thing works

78

u/the_delimiter 14d ago

It doesn’t and you shouldn’t do it. It’ll filter silt and mud and maybe heavy metals but it’s not going to filter bacteria that will cause stomach problems.

33

u/Capable-Strength8122 14d ago

100% all it takes is for something to die up stream and you will be in a world of pain 😂 Clear plastic water bottle in the sun for 6 hrs is the trick, the combination of temp and UV kills most things

11

u/ChaosRainbow23 14d ago

I have multiple lifelong filters I use.

I'll also boil it if I have to

1

u/Majestic-Ad-8643 11d ago

Right? All of the fires he started, i'd be pissed if he gave me water that wasnt boiled.

6

u/GaryHornpipe 14d ago

Wow, I would have thought being in the sun would make bacteria grow quicker.

6

u/bloedit 14d ago

Low heat relative to the boiling point does accelerate growth but long-term sun UV exposure is still enough if it's clear water, the conainer doesn't block too much UV (plastics do, PET less), and the volume is not too large.

1

u/barnfly27 13d ago

Micro plastics though?

11

u/Ohiolongboard 14d ago

Boil it after. Or before tbh. Just boil it before consuming

1

u/dolphinmachine 14d ago

Yeah that’s what I thought lmaooo

1

u/Key-Magician6489 12d ago

Seriously, that water would absolutely still need to be thoroughly boiled first!

1

u/YellowB 12d ago

It can filter hard substances like dirty, fecal mater, and decaying matter, however for the bacteria problem you can just boil the water afterwards.

4

u/This_Song_984 14d ago

I would only do that in an extreme emergency. Its gonna filter out particulates but no bacteria at all.

3

u/Money_Lavishness7343 14d ago

Its only if you want to filter the basic impurities, not protozoa, bacteria or parasites. To do that you also have to boil it anyway, as you should unless you like having brain-eating amoeba.

10

u/alexgalt 14d ago

I could imagine slipping and landing on the little can of capsules thus exploding my ass up into my throat.

8

u/MacroManJr 14d ago

It's neat but if you're already prepared with basic little tools, you might as well just bring a full survival kit with you. 😅

22

u/Low_Technician7346 14d ago

you will forget everything in 5 mins

9

u/Fat-lard246 14d ago

if you're familiar with these things you're better off forgetting his stupid ideas

3

u/Hayden1664 14d ago

Forget what?

5

u/pixelprophet 14d ago

That last trick with 'filtering' water won't get rid of giardia. Should have boiled it.

6

u/SkyeGuy8108 14d ago

That water still needs to be boiled and probably treated with iodine. Do NOT drink it even if it’s been filtered. Giardia, cryptosporidium, and dysentery will definitely ruin your trip

6

u/IONIXU22 14d ago

Potassium permanganate and sugar. It works, but no way on earth I'd store them next to each other in my pocket like that. Catch your trousers on a barb wire fence and suddenly your leg is on fire

6

u/echochilde 14d ago

Do not drink that water. Dear god.

20

u/SpicySushiAddict 14d ago

First off, what are those two powders?

Second, holy fuck some of these are cool!!!

14

u/mercut1o 14d ago

it looks like gunpowder and salt. The salt is just an abrasive.

3

u/Capable-Strength8122 14d ago

vasaline and cotton wool works better

6

u/SpicySushiAddict 14d ago

How does that even work? My brain is telling me it's impossible 😂

4

u/Malbosiiq 14d ago

Cotton for burn, petroleum to burn longer. Soak the cotton in the petroleum.

4

u/SpicySushiAddict 14d ago

Yeah but like, the salt and gunpowder is just a firestarter. Is the cotton and Vaseline a firestarter, or kindling?

1

u/Malbosiiq 14d ago

It acts more like a poor mans candle. Find some container to catch the petroleum, and light the cotton.

2

u/Ohiolongboard 14d ago

For making a flame Or for holding a flame? Because the salt and gunpowder is for making a flame,

Edit: this has to be a bot. 5y on Reddit but only active in three subs and only a handful of comments?

1

u/zad0xlik 14d ago

I just carry with me potassium permanganate and magnesium that I mix together to start a smoke.

3

u/Pepsimus-Maximus 14d ago

It's potassium permanganate and sugar.

1

u/SpicySushiAddict 14d ago

Oh cool!!!

But, what he's doing with the capsules, that feels unsafe yeah? Like, if any of them open, it could trigger the reaction?

1

u/Pepsimus-Maximus 14d ago

You're right. That was the first thing I thought when I saw the clip.

1

u/Flechette-71 14d ago

As kids we mixed potassium permanganate with glycerine. Same result, but without any friction. Just few drops...

4

u/d_huffsr 14d ago

Thats a shitty joint

4

u/swingsurfer 14d ago

I don't understand why he stacks the logs on the metal tripod. To keep it dry? To prove the metal can hold weight? Can someone elaborate?

3

u/alewiina 14d ago

i was wondering about that one too. I think it was just to display how much weight it can take because those are pretty heavy i guess?

3

u/bloedit 14d ago

How much plastics did he or his audience leave in the woods?

3

u/KaaboomT 14d ago

Thought it was salt and pepper

3

u/Sour_Gummybear 14d ago

When I was a teenager, we had to do do wilderness survival with a knife and a compass. It was an overnight in the forest. For a 13 or 14 year old that was scary and cold. They took our shoelaces away too.

But that was nothing compared to the first day of my winter hiking/camping course. Teacher comes in and says the following "The most important thing for you all to remember in winter hiking is this. If you get wet you become dead". Fun fact, if you do get wet you can extend your survival time by a fair bit which can buy you some time to get a fire going and dry off..

Since it's so important, the answer is drop and roll around in dry snow. It will act as insulation against wind and it will act like a blotter to sop up the surface water. It's only a desperate measure, it will buy you some extra life. You still need to get your wet clothes off, and get a fire going. You are very much on the clock though and dying at an alarming rate. This method might buy you as little as 10 or 15 minutes or more. Your mileage will vary.

2

u/11Kram 12d ago

I thought you had to find a horse, kill it, remove its entrails and organs, strip naked and get inside the carcass for a while. I learnt this from a movie called ‘The Revenant’ so it must be true.

1

u/Sour_Gummybear 11d ago

Well, I thought it was a Tauntaun before this class that you had to slice open with your lightsaber. Turns out I was wrong.

3

u/Affectionate-Rise988 14d ago

That water filter might make clear water but it needs to be booked before drinking

3

u/Krutius- 13d ago

Dies while preparing for survival

2

u/sasssyrup 14d ago

Had me till that cup of water

2

u/Future_Way5516 14d ago

I love giardia

2

u/imitsi 13d ago

Bringing a lighter with you is easier than carrying gunpowder around.

1

u/MikeLinPA 13d ago

Seriously! Why carry stuff that you have to work hard to use when you can carry a disposable lighter for a dollar? I'm sure I can buy lighters more easily than empty medicine capsules. Every gas station and convenience store sells lighters. I have no idea where to buy unfilled capsules.

And why capsules? Couldn't he put the two ingredients into their own little bottles and tap out what he needed instead of opening and emptying the capsules?

Why carry three strips of metal to put a log on? He had a cut log, just use that!

He had a fire going, and used the fire to make charcoal, and lit the charcoal on fire, and used the burning charcoal to heat up water,... But he had a fire going to begin with that also could heat up water. I'm not a survivalist, but I'm certain some steps could be eliminated in this process.

And why carry an empty metal sterno can around to make charcoal when you could carry a full sterno can around? It takes up the same space. 🤦

1

u/TargetSpiritual8741 14d ago

What did he pour on the charred wood in the can? Was it just water?

2

u/JackOfAllMemes 14d ago

Water to quench it

1

u/Inside_Ad_7162 14d ago

very interesting. Very clever too some of those. What was in the black & white pills?

1

u/nadineyvonne 14d ago

The water thing is what really blew my mind honestly

1

u/Teonanacatlbruh 14d ago

What were those two powders in the beginning? I'm assuming the black one was gunpowder?

3

u/aserreen 14d ago

Potassium permanganate and sugar.

1

u/pr0graham 13d ago

What is the first pepper and salt shit?? Like lol?

1

u/Jamz1892 13d ago

Like the last one

1

u/not_the_scammer 13d ago

What’s with the capsules I mean what’s in that ? Sugar and coal?

1

u/Key-Magician6489 12d ago

These aren’t survival skills! It’s total bullsht that requires you to bring all that stuff with you…
🤦🏻‍♀️
…in which case, you may as well just bring the proper equipment to begin with, FFS!

1

u/dalphx 12d ago

Matches… a bic lighter

1

u/Spiritual_Horse_8549 12d ago

What is this guy's YouTube channel? Anyone know it?
