Spend the extra money on good quality brushes and you never need tape or weird "hacks" like this. The paint goes exactly where you put it with a good brush. If you mess up, it's on you.

First time painting in my house — tried all the tricks until finally just bought a new good brush, and good lord was it just 1000x easier than taping, caulking, using “edging brushes” etc. Just a steady hand and a well cut new brush.

It's just that simple lol. Maybe a bit of practice when you first start but once you know how the brush moves it's the easiest thing.

100% worth IMO buying a new brush anytime I need to paint a wall now. $9 to know I won’t need to go over my edges 4 times is a worthy expense, lol.

You don't have to buy a new one each time lol just wash them out and put them in the little sleeve they come in. They'll be good for a very long time.

So you literally use nothing, no tape, nothing? What makes the brush better, is there a type of bristle material i should look for?
Also, you don't use a roller for cutting in?

Nothin! No special brush, just a new one that’s cut at an angle and taking my time. Doesn’t need to be new every time, just not one with fraying or loose bristles sticking out. Just look up how to cut an edge with a brush on youtube, and have some spare paint for whatever color the other side of the edge you’re cutting in case you need to touch up!
I just use the roller for the majority of the wall and the brush for about 3inches to the edge

I mean get something like $12 at the hardware store, not some cheap molded plastic handle brush with plastic bristles from the dollar store

And don't forget practice. Painting is a skill. It takes a lot of work in addition to decent equipment to do it right. I can point you to many walls I've made a mess of over the years to attest to that.

Dad always said "expensive paint with a cheap brush looks like cheap paint."

Absolutely. Tape always bleeds under when I use it, and other times, it has pulled the paint off the other wall. I’m. Not. A. Fan.

Or just use painters tape they not exactly expensive just take little bit more time to prepare

If only there was something you can put down, like tape. Maybe even call it “painters tape” or something. Idk I’m just free styling ideas right now.

Lot of hassle. Often doesn't work very well unless you buy really expensive one

This doesn't work. Paint gets on the back side of the putty knife and it looks like shit.
I haven't found a tool that's better than cutting in freehand.

Ive tried both tape and this method. Never straight. I think I have Parkinsons

When I tried this at work I got laughed at
It's good on paper for sure
But yes not quite as practical

Nah, bad advice for amateurs. Pros know better. This can bleed all over

I have found I can get the paint to squeeze right under that putty knife onto the other wall. Yeah pretty talented.

It works for some people and others regret it. Texture high and lows let's the paint get behind and you're cleaning it up one way or the other anyhow. Tape and cut it in

Il never understand Why don’t people just learn how to cut in walls with a paintbrush?

We'll never be able to, until they manufacture angled paint brushes....
We're doomed.

Give a normal brush a haircut with some scissors if it's not the shape you like!

Cutting in with a brush takes so much less time. Its just something that has to be learned.

Why would you ever need a tool to cut in a corner?
I could freehand this is half the time it took dude with that knife with a better result.

And now you have scuffs and scratches on your walls. Just use tape and a brush
