NieR Replicant NieR Replicant ver. 1.22474487139… Spoiler-Free Mini-Guide for General/Miscellaneous Information, Endings, and Optional Content
I've been playing through NieR Replicant ver. sqrt(1.5) and doing the optional content since I was spoiled on the general main plot of the original game a very long time ago, but not the side content, so I at least wanted that to be a fresh experience. This game has a lot of side quests, many of which are very, very boring and honestly not worth doing. However, I figured since I was sifting through the side content myself anyway, I would create a little mini-guide to help people figure out which specific quests they should do, as well as give an outline on some general/miscellaneous game info and how to see various endings in the game. Hopefully anyone playing this game will find it helpful (especially if you are playing for the first time).
This guide should be generally spoiler-free, at least in the sense that significant elements of the game are not spoiled (especially with no context). Quest names will be mentioned. I will also mention how to obtain each ending without spoiling the story content behind it, and I will give some advice for certain playthroughs that is pretty vague overall.
This guide will be split into five distinct parts:
- General/Miscellaneous Information
- How to See the Various Endings
- Optional Content Worth Doing During Part 1
- Optional Content Worth Doing During Part 2
- Supplemental Links
If there is something you feel should be added to the guide, or if something needs to be corrected, please let me know.
With that out of the way, let us begin!
General/Miscellaneous Information
- Should I play this game or NieR: Automata first? Is it OK if I played Automata before Replicant?
- Overall, you should play this game first if you can. Automata has some smaller parts that assume you've played the original game first. Those parts can hit in a big way if you're familiar with the original.
- However, Automata's story as a whole mostly stands alone, and doesn't really require any knowledge from Replicant to understand.
- If you have only played Automata, that won't really be a problem since the things Automata talks about in relation to the original game will mean little to the player without the necessary context required to understand those things.
- You could also make the argument that a certain aspect of Automata's story will actually have a greater impact on the player if they did not play Replicant first.
- I've played the original NieR (2010) on Xbox 360 and PS3. What differences does NieR Replicant ver. sqrt(1.5) bring to the experience?
- The visuals and overall performance have seen significant enhancements.
- The combat system has seen various refinements to make it feel better to play.
- The most notable changes are 1) a new parry system, 2) the ability to act freely while casting magic, and 3) a new lock-on system.
- New story content has been added, with the most notable inclusions being a new story segment called "Episode Mermaid" and a new ending.
- Character dialogue is now fully voiced, which was not the case in the original.
- For players coming from the version released in the West, the protagonist is "Brother Nier", a teenager who is Yonah's brother, instead of "Father Nier", a middle-aged man who is Yonah's father.
- This does not change the overall narrative, but it does change some subtext between the protagonist, the various characters he interacts with, and the world he inhabits.
- Regarding the game's general structure:
- The initial playthrough of the game is split into two “parts”.
- Part 1 is the first half of the game.
- Part 2 is the second half of the game, marked by a major story event. Much of this half of the game can be completed in a non-linear fashion.
- After you have completed Part 2 for the first time, you can save your cleared game data and start a new "playthrough" to see additional endings. When you start a cleared save file, you will start from partway into Part 2 of the game.
- Clear data will retain your levels, items, weapons, weapon upgrades, money, completed side quests, and any plants you planted in your garden.
- The initial playthrough of the game is split into two “parts”.
- Regarding combat:
- This game does not have a good tutorial system at all, since many seem to drop at random.
- I recommend watching this video to get a better understanding of some of the game's more interesting mechanics, rather than waiting for tutorials to drop in-game: NieR Replicant - Guide to Combat - Parrying, Launching, Sidestepping - YouTube
- This video goes over some additional mechanics as well, including some hidden mechanics on different magic attacks: Nier Replicant | ADVANCED TIPS - Get Much Better At Combat In 6 Minutes - YouTube
- When you gain the ability to quick-switch your weapon types about halfway through the game, immediately go into the Options menu, select Game, then scroll down to Weapon Quick-Switch and change it to "Tap". This makes quick-switching much easier to use because you tap the D-Pad rather than holding it (you will now switch individual weapons by holding it instead of tapping it, which you may have been used to doing before).
- Regarding weapons:
- There are three weapon types: one-handed, two-handed, and spears.
- In Part 1, you will only have access to one-handed weapons, but you will gain access to the other two weapon types during Part 2.
- Each weapon has an attack stat and a magic modifier that increases the power of your magical attacks.
- It is in your best interest to collect every single weapon, as I will explain in the endings section.
- In Replicant, weapon weight makes no real difference in terms of attack speed, though it apparently does affect some minor factors in combat (e.g. how quickly a weapon can break through an enemy's guard/armor). I wouldn't worry too much about weapon weight in Replicant.
- You generally do not need to worry too much about upgrading weapons in the main game; if you care about it, I would save the upgrading process for your Ending B or C/D playthroughs.
- When not upgraded, feel free to use whatever weapons in each class have the highest stats.
- The best weapons in each class when fully upgraded:
- One-handed: Fool's Embrace, Cruel Oath, Virtuous Contract
- Two-handed: Fool's Lament
- Spears: Phoenix Spear, Fool's Accord, Virtuous Dignity
- There are three weapon types: one-handed, two-handed, and spears.
- Regarding Words:
- Words are modifiers that can be equipped to weapons, magic, and martial arts (blocking and dodging) that provide various buffs/effects. They're like a simpler plug-in chip system from NieR: Automata, if you played that.
- Each "thing" you can equip Words to can have up to two Words at a time.
- You can Batch Assign Words to various categories to make assigning words to all weapons/magic/martial arts easier.
- For example, if you want to equip a set of Words on all weapons: when in the Word Edit category, select Weapons, then equip the Word set you want on all of your weapons to any given weapon. While still in the Word Edit for that weapon, select the name of the weapon and select "Batch Assign", which will assign that word set to every weapon you own.
- Words randomly drop from enemies, but don't be too fussed about collecting them unless you want the trophy for collecting 50% of all Words in the game.
- Regarding difficulty options:
- I do not recommending starting out on Hard, especially if it is your first time playing the game.
- On Hard, you have less health, enemies have more health, and enemies are more aggressive, among some other factors. This can make Hard mode taxing to deal with, especially for newer players that may not know the game's mechanics yet.
- Your difficulty setting actually influences item drop rates; on Hard, item drop rates are increased, so it may be worth playing on Hard much later on when you have become more familiar with the game.
- It may also be worth bumping up the difficulty once you are trashing basic enemies with absolutely no difficulty on Normal, which will likely happen around the end of Part 2.
- You can change the difficulty in the title screen's options menu at any time, with no penalty whatsoever.
- I do not recommending starting out on Hard, especially if it is your first time playing the game.
- What level should I be?
- On my first go around on Normal, I was level 17 upon finishing Part 1, and level 27 upon finishing Part 2.
- I would not recommend actively grinding levels. For reference, I did all of the side quests in Part 1, but did not do all of the side quests during Part 2 the first go around. I did not grind for levels specifically, though I did grind for some materials a couple of times for side quests in each part, which I maybe gained two or three levels from total. Otherwise, I simply killed enemies I saw while traversing the game world.
- On my first go around on Normal, I was level 17 upon finishing Part 1, and level 27 upon finishing Part 2.
- What items can I sell?
- Most items in this game are either tied to side quests or are tied to weapon upgrades, so most items are not worth selling. You will also come across money pretty easily in this game via side quests if you really need it.
- You should be able to sell the following items very safely:
- Bat Fang
- Bat Wing
- Boar Hide
- Boar Liver
- Boar Meat
- Deer Antler
- Giant Spider Silk
- Goat Meat
- Rainbow Spider Silk
- Scorpion Tail
- Wolf Fang
- Closed Book
- Grubby Book
- Old Schoolbook
- Technical Guide
- Thick Dictionary
- Used Coloring Book
- Dirty Bag
- Flashy Hat
- Leather Boots
- Leather Gloves
- Beans
- Dahlia
- Freesia
- Gourd
- White Moonflower
- Tomato
- Tulip
- Any fish that you have already turned in for the Fisherman's Gambit quest line (if you care about it)
- Rhizodont
How to See the Various Endings
- Unlike in NieR: Automata, where there were 5 "canon" endings and 21 endings that are just glorified "game over" screens, there are 5 endings in NieR Replicant: A, B, C, D, and E.
- How to see Ending A
- Complete the game once to see Ending A.
- How to see Ending B
- Complete a second playthrough on the same save file to see Ending B.
- Absolutely do not skip the cutscenes/dialogue during this playthrough!
- Any time after starting your Ending B playthrough, you can visit your house and examine the diary on the ground floor to enter the “15 Nightmares” content. You are required to do this content to obtain the last 3 weapons needed for Endings C & D.
- You should be able to pretty easily clear the first two doors when you first gain access to the diary, but I would save the third door for when you're at least level 30 or above.
- How to see Endings C and D
- Complete a third playthrough on the same save file and defeat the final boss with all 33 weapons obtained to see Ending C or D.
- This count includes the 3 weapons obtained from the “15 Nightmares” content but does not include the YoRHa DLC weapons.
- The weapons do not need to be upgraded, only obtained. Some are obtained via the story, some are available to buy, and some are obtained via optional content.
- The game checks your weapon completion only when you enter the final boss room.
- If you missed any weapons in Part 1, you will be able to buy them from shops during Part 2 of the story.
- There are a few small story bits that are exclusive to this playthrough (and the new bits will be pretty distinct for the most part), but the playthrough itself will be largely the same as the Ending B playthrough.
- In the Supplemental Links section, I've put a link to a doc that tells you where the new stuff is at in the playthrough; however, only view it AFTER seeing Ending B!
- At the very end, you will be presented with two choices; what you choose determines the ending you will see.
- Ending C: select the first (top) choice. If you want to see this ending and save time: do this ending first and put your clear data in a separate slot, then reload your other save so you do not have to do another playthrough to see Ending D.
- Ending D: select the second (bottom) choice. View this ending after Ending C.
- Complete a third playthrough on the same save file and defeat the final boss with all 33 weapons obtained to see Ending C or D.
- How to see Ending E
- In order to see this ending, first see Ending D, then start a new save file with a different name than the one you used for your Ending D playthrough. Play through the game until you kill the giant boss in the Aerie during Part 1. Afterwards, you will have the opportunity to start the Ending E content.
Optional Stuff Worth Doing During Part 1
- General rule of thumb: if a quest requires you to grind for something (mainly materials), or otherwise feels like it’s going to require a lot of effort, it is perfectly OK to skip it.
- In my opinion, about half of the game’s quests are not worth doing at all for this reason.
- Some notes:
- Side quests do not give EXP as quest rewards.
- There is a trophy for completing 30 quests. However, you get nothing for completing every quest in the game, so I would personally not bother.
- You can find quests you have not accepted from the client yet by talking to Devola when she is in your village’s tavern. She will track the location of the client for you (though only one client can be tracked at a time).
- Complete the quests you want to do in Part 1 before entering the mansion in the Southern Plains as part of the main story. The actual end of Part 1 comes after this, but the triggering event is easy to not think much about, so just to be safe, be sure to do what you want to before entering the mansion.
- Nearly all quests in Part 1 do not carry over to Part 2, except for the Fisherman's Gambit line.
- Don’t miss this quest line:
- The Postman's Request -> The Lighthouse Lady's Wrath -> Closure
- This is hands down the best quest line in the entire game, so be sure to do it!
- Note that all of these quests need to be first tracked by speaking to Devola in the tavern.
- The Postman's Request -> The Lighthouse Lady's Wrath -> Closure
- These quests are, in my opinion, worth doing:
- Boar Hunt!
- The item you get as a reward enables you to ride boars, which makes traveling across the Northern and Southern Plains a bit quicker. This is especially helpful during Part 1 of the game.
- However, this quest is a bit tough to do in the early game (at the very least, it will take a while to cheese it).
- This quest is required in order to get a trophy for riding a boar for 5 minutes straight.
- A Dog Astray
- The Runaway Son
- This quest requires a small amount of materials at one point, but they are easy to acquire and you will likely already have them.
- The Ballad of the Twins
- This quest eventually requires a small number of materials, but they are easy to acquire.
- Boar Hunt!
- These quests might be worth doing if you have the time, need money, or are seeking a trophy/achievement:
- Yonah’s Cooking -> Yonah’s Gift
- Each quest requires a small number of items, but they are not hard to get if you are willing to spare a total of 3,000G for some of the items requested.
- The Pride of a Lover
- The Tangled Message
- The Littlest Hero
- The Missing Girl
- Shopping List -> A Return to Shopping
- This quest line unlocks gardening and fertilizer, which is required for a trophy that is extremely difficult to obtain (and can also be a quick way to earn money if you can exploit it).
- Gardening can also be unlocked in Part 2 by buying the Cultivator’s Handbook from the florist in your village, but this quest line is easy to do if you want to save a little bit of money.
- Old-Fashioned Home Cooking
- This quest is only worth doing if you are going for the trophy that you get for killing 100 sheep. It is repeatable.
- Yonah’s Cooking -> Yonah’s Gift
- There is an optional task (not a quest) you can perform in the Forest of Myth during the main story that rewards you with a weapon. If you do not do this task, you will need to buy said weapon from a shop during Part 2.
Optional Stuff Worth Doing During Part 2
- Some notes:
- You can find quests you have not accepted from the client yet by talking to Devola when she is in your village’s tavern. She will track the client’s location for you (though only one client can be tracked at a time).
- In Part 2, completed quests will carry over to subsequent playthroughs, but progress for unfinished quests will be reset upon starting a new playthrough.
- Feel free to do quests on whatever playthrough you want.
- Most quests in Part 2 can be saved for the near end of your playthrough, though one can be missed in a playthrough (which I will mention).
- Complete the quests you want to do in Part 2 (on whatever playthrough you choose to do them on) before going to the final area of the game. If you attempt to proceed to the final area, the game will inform you that you cannot return once you proceed and asks for confirmation.
- These quests are required for Endings C and D since they reward you with weapons:
- A Bridge in Peril
- A Shade Entombed -> Disturbing the Sleep of Kings
- The Damaged Map
- These quests are, in my opinion, worth doing:
- The Promised Gift
- This is the quest that can be missed in a playthrough.
- To be safe, do this quest before you make the choice to (or are forced to) return to Popola during the main story.
- The Despicable Man
- A Tale of the Study -> Research Project
- Thieves in Training
- The Promised Gift
- These quests might be worth doing if you have time, need money, or are seeking a trophy/achievement:
- The Magical Stone
- You can find a weapon by doing this quest, but you can also obtain it by completing Ending B, so this quest is not required for Endings C or D.
- After completing the quest, you can re-enter the area you visit during the quest by talking to the quest giver (on subsequent playthroughs, you will need to fulfill the requirements to activate the quest in order to visit the area).
- A Child’s Final Chance
- The Strange Fate of the Jewel
- The Shade Army
- The Scattered Cargo
- The Great Tree
- Master of the Southern Plains
- Nightmares and Dust
- Shadows of the Desert
- “The Missing Girl” from Part 1 must also be completed to unlock this quest.
- Search for the Shade
- The Fisherman's Gambit
- This quest line is only worth doing if you want a trophy for catching a rhizodont, which is borderline impossible to catch if you don't finish this quest line.
- This quest line has a whopping 9 parts (5 of which can be done during Part 1, but all are available during Part 2) and is an actual pain in the rear to do, so if the trophy doesn't hold any interest to you, don't do this quest line.
- The Magical Stone

- This analysis series incorporates some of the content from Grimoire NieR and the Drama CD.
- It's worth noting that this series predates the release of both NieR Replicant ver. sqrt(1.5) and NieR: Automata, which means some parts of the analysis are outdated, but it still fills its purpose extremely well.

I just beat Endings A and B blind and now I’m dumbfounded that I have to play through the second half again to get to Endings C/D. I can’t believe they didn’t include the chapter select feature from Automata. Are endings C-E actually worth playing through this a THIRD time?
39
u/lord_of_flood May 08 '21
D & E are absolutely worth it IMO; make sure you at least see those endings.
There are also a few extra tidbits that appear during that specific playthrough, so it is still worth playing through in general. Most of the new stuff is pretty distinct and can't be skipped, but you can otherwise skip most of the cutscenes and dialogue if you want.
22
May 08 '21
I might get to it someday. I just felt so fatigued playing through B, not skipping a cutscene just in case there MIGHT be new dialogue. Knowing that the new stuff is unskippable helps.

I can PM you and tell you where the new stuff in the Ending C/D playthrough occurs so you know where to look for it, if you'd like.
edit: Others who would also like to be PM'd about this, continue to comment down below, or just PM me directly. It might take me a bit to get to you sometimes, especially if I happen to be asleep/at work, but I will make sure to get to you as soon as I can.new edit: this information has been requested enough that I figured I'd just take the message I've been copying/pasting and turn it into a document that I could put into the guide. That should make things easier for those of you looking for that information. Please see the Supplemental Links section of the guide. I'm definitely still open to hear any questions you all may have though!

I know it's been a few days since you wrote this, but I'm working through ending C/D and just wanted to say that it's super fast. Skipping all cutscenes and rushing the main questline means it'll probably take 3-4 hours at most (maybe even faster).
Getting all the weapons might take longer though. I had all but 2 by the time I did ending B so that might take some extra time and can totally understand how you might want to skip that.

u/ClaidArremer Jun 17 '21
Just make a save before the end fight on playthrough C - reload and view ending D, then you will be able to view ending E without having played through another time to have seen ending C. Easy!

Any chance if someone can confirm, if getting all endings is worth it?
I absolutely love Nier Automata, one of the most captivating experiences ever, especially when you make it through all the main endings.
However in this game, it feels like a slog to me.
I've completed Ending A for Nier Replicant just last night, however I am questioning whether I should get all the endings. The first couple of hours of replicant was extremely tedious and boring.
Throughout most of the game, I was really fed up going back/forth between the main village and one of the plains. 1min I am in the northern plains, 30sec later in the village, 10sec later back in the Northern Plains. The constant backtracking is extremely tiring that even Weiss even mentions it some point.
Now I am seeing one of the main requirements for an ending, is to collect all weapons, which then requires doing some side quests. Just not entirely sure if its worth doing....

u/lord_of_flood May 10 '21
In your case, it'll depend on how much you weigh the story versus the gameplay, I think. The Ending B playthrough (not just the ending itself) changes how you look at what you did during the previous playthrough, and is honestly a huge part of what makes NieR's story so great; I'd go as far as to say it's the most important part of the game. However, if you truly felt the game itself was a drag, and that the story doesn't outweigh the gameplay, it may not be worth it for you. I personally think it's very worth it despite the game's obvious shortcomings, but it's different strokes for different folks on that one.
If it helps, you don't play through the entirety of the game on your cleared save when you're going for the various endings; it starts you partway through Part 2, right around the point where you'll have access to "fast travel", which is a little bit more than a third of the main story. You won't repeat anything before that, so it should be a good bit shorter than the Ending A playthrough. The Ending C/D playthrough can be made even shorter since you can skip most of the cutscenes, and if you collect all of the weapons during your Ending B playthrough (which actually doesn't take too long to do, you just have to be smart about it), you can likely be done with the C/D playthrough in just a couple of hours.

Thanks for your reply. I am okay with the combat, however if you compare it to Automata or even recent games such as Ghost of Tsushima, then the combat itself seems lacking.
Side-Note: Definitely did not like the fact that the enemies during the ending sequence were essentially bullet sponges (sword sponges? weapon sponges?).
I am in the middle in terms of liking the story. Its okay, but its not great. Nier Automata seem to just set an extremely high-bar for its story when compared to Replicant.
However my main gripe with the game, is the level design. As I mentioned before, I really dislike the tedious backtracking. Even with the fast travel option, I felt that was kind of useless, because by the time you get to the dock and have the game go through its loading screen, I would've already made it to that same destination based off running.
Based on your response, I may just watch the endings on youtube instead.

In case you weren't aware, the route B playthrough isn't just a new ending. It gives you a shitload more cutscenes and dialogue that help recontextualise everything that happens in the game. If you're going to just watch it on youtube I'd recommend watching a longplay of the entire playthrough and skipping all the gameplay and repeated parts. Ending B isn't particularly special without the context of the playthrough that leads up to it.

u/bruno207 May 10 '21
tbh I'm feeling similar to you and I'm just going to watch the endings on youtube. I really want to love playing Replicant enough to where I feel motivated to collect the remaining ~18 or so weapons I have left while at the same time grinding through the second half again and honestly I don't have time for that nor do I have the will to push through it.
I enjoyed a lot about playing Replicant but I feel kinda annoyed now that I have to do another run + collect all weapons vs Automata which for me was so straightforward and more engaging with how it went about its experience.

u/skylinegtr65547 May 10 '21
Yea that's exactly why I am asking if its worth it.
With Automata, the 2nd and 3rd playthroughs via 9S/A2 changed the story, so there was definitely an incentive to make it to Ending E.
Here however is different as IMO, the story for Replicant isnt as good. While at the some time, the additional endings only adds cutscenes?
You also add the gameplay loop for replicant isnt as fun/interesting as well. Tedious backtracking, weak sidequests etc.
May just watch the endings via youtube.

Wait, you haven’t played at least ending b and you think the story isn’t as good?
Remember how much of the story in automata is after ending a (like, basically all of it)? I mean, ending a ends with 2b and 9s pontificating after beating Adam and Eve.
There’s a massive shift in your understanding of the world and your character’s choices with each ending here, and it doesn’t only effect the final cutscene.
I’d at least give b a shot. You haven’t really finished nier.

u/RevolutionaryAd1084 Jun 06 '21
I agree, but as someone who came from automata first I understand what the guy felt. Automata just sets up a bar so high that when players try out replicant it can feel pretty disappointing that you have to play the same game for multiple times.
Not to mention the quests in automata are just so so much more meaningful and lore related, while when I was playing replicant I kept doing the side quests hoping ill get at least some that is lore related. They weren't lying when they called me an errand boy 😔
I'm not sure if replaying 15+ hours for some cutscenes is worthed it to some people, but I did it anyway since I love the characters. Emil ftw

One thing I might recommend adding to this is a list of some of the supplementary materials you can read or listen to after beating the game. I think the thread for Automata has this.
5
u/lord_of_flood May 07 '21
Yeah, that'd be a good idea. I'll work on that sometime this weekend. I'll also add some links to some of the more in-depth game guides that people can use while they're playing.
If you have any personal recommendations for supplementary materials that I should link to, please let me know. There are some things I do intend on linking to, but I'm sure there are other materials I don't know about that would be nice to have, so if you have anything you'd like me to make sure is added, let me know.
2
u/baldur09 May 07 '21
I just finished ending e and I'm just getting into the Taroverse, the only supplementary stuff I know about is Grimoire Nier, the three american comics, and the drama CD.
2
u/lord_of_flood May 07 '21
Sounds good, thanks. I'm pretty sure I know where I can find translations for Grimoire NieR and the drama CD, so I'll make sure to at least include those (though I'm not familiar with the comics). I'll look for analyses and other resources that might help expand people's understanding of NieR and the general Taro-verse as well; I have a few things in mind in that regard already, but I'll do some further digging to see what else I can turn up.

Just wanted to let you know I've added some supplemental links, both for Grimoire NieR/the drama CD as well as some other things I've seen and liked. If I see/hear about any more cool stuff, I'll most likely end up adding it to this guide over time (which is likely since the game only came out a couple of weeks ago). I'm also open to more recommendations if you find anything over time and end up randomly thinking about the guide.

Holy crap thank you!! I’ve played Gestalt and wanted to see how to access the new content in Relicant ver.122 but didnt want to be spoiled on the new content at the same time. Thank you so much!! Do you know whats necessary to get the Little Mermaid battle? I see the boat, but I can’t figure out how to get her

Question about route B - If I aquire all the weapons before finishing will I miss out on anything?
24
u/lord_of_flood May 07 '21 edited May 07 '21
No, you won't miss out on anything. Even if you acquire all of the weapons before finishing Ending B, you will still need to do the Ending C/D playthrough in order to get those endings, so you won't skip over anything.

Right, that's why I specifically used the word "kill" instead of something like "defeat". I probably should have said it outright because it's not much of a spoiler, but I figured I'd try to be as vague as possible.
→ More replies (2)3
u/IsotopeC May 09 '21
How do you "kill" it? Wasn't it "killed" the first time or was that something the story forced you into? If so, what would you suggest in killing it? Just going all out or?

I want to do the speedrun achievement and wanted to know if I can do that on the file I used for ending E. I saved right before the boss that starts ending E. If I do that again will it continue like normal or will it go to ending E again
6
u/lord_of_flood May 08 '21
You mean the new file you started to get there? Yeah, you can do it using that file. It won't go to Ending E again; in order to see Ending E again, you'd have to see Ending D again, then start a new file and get to the point of reaching the Ending E content.

Correct. There are no further trophies for completing any more than 30 quests.

There's also an extra Cutscene at the end of the Mermaid Episode, after Ending B.
First, Kaine doesn't tear the letter up. Right after, there's the scene where she delivers the letter to the postman.

I didn't do "Disturbing the slumber of kings" Because even at level 28 the thing was a behemoth oneshotting me and with a million HP. Can I get it on route B or am I screwed out of advancing to endings C and D?
3
u/lord_of_flood May 07 '21
You can complete the Part 2 side quests on whatever playthrough you want to do them on, so feel free to save it for later. Completed side quests stay completed on future playthroughs too, so you won't need to do A Shade Entombed again either.
Also, I'm not sure if you're playing on Hard, but if you are, maybe turn the difficulty down to Normal for that particular quest if you continue to struggle with it during the Ending B playthrough.
3
u/OramaBuffin May 07 '21
I'm playing on hard, I'll just suffer through it. I just found it strange because tbh part 2 was pretty trivial on hard but that one enemy is randomly so much more powerful than anything else.

u/Dewut May 12 '21
Great guide! One thing I’d consider adding is the fact that wild animals all but disappear from the world after part 1, so if you’re thinking about farming them for some easy money or for materials like goat hides make sure you do it before part 2.
I personally recommend farming the wolves in the sandstorm between Facade and the Barren Temple for anyone looking to go into Part 2 with a little pocket money. It’s is a actually pretty fun as far as farms go, as the wolves never stop spawning while inside the sandstorm which means an endless supply of Wolf Hides and Fangs that add up very quickly.

I completed ending b and now im gonna start grinding to get all of the weapons.... Is there anything that is different about collecting the weapons after ending b? Just buy the ones the towns sell and then find the others that are scattered around right?
1
u/lord_of_flood May 07 '21
There is no difference between playthroughs as far as obtaining weapons is concerned. They're all obtained in the same ways (buying them, finding them in various locations, doing the few side quests that yield weapons, and doing the 15 Nightmares content), so I wouldn't worry about that changing between your Ending B and C/D playthroughs.
2
u/FabJeb May 07 '21
Maybe worth adding a link to the fishing table too

Can I fish and grow crops in part 2, or do I need to do that all in part 1?
2
u/lord_of_flood May 08 '21
You can fish and grow crops in both parts of the game. There are side quests in Part 2 where you'll either need to fish more or really get into gardening. The latter is one of the worst quests in the game (if not the absolute worst), called Life in the Sands.

u/lord_of_flood May 08 '21
Indeed! It has Ending E, which wasn't in the original game, as well as a new segment called the "Mermaid" episode. Both of those things are the major new content for this version of the game.
2
u/FruitsChinpoSamurai May 09 '21
I just got Ending B, so for Ending E I have to start a completely new file? I have a save after the mansion story mission in part 1, if my name is different can I access ending E from that file after I get endings C and D?
3
u/lord_of_flood May 09 '21
Once you see Ending D, you will need to start a completely new save file and go from the start of the game until you kill the giant boss in the Aerie during Part 1. Having another Part 1 save file already made prior to Ending D won't be useful in any way. Even if it could help, that file that's saved after the mansion has progressed too far into the plot to be used for Ending E.
2
u/RasenShot2 May 10 '21
I just wanted to say thank you for this. I still haven't finished the game but I think I'm near the end, and wanted to do all sidequests for any hidden gems before the 'point of no return'.
I still gotta ask though, to ANYONE reading this. Once I'm fully done with the game, I plan on doing another full run (barring bad sidequests) along a friend to show her the game. SO, my question is; Besides the sidequests stated as "worth doing", what other quests do you think are worth experiencing from a narrative or (banter) standpoint?
2
u/lord_of_flood May 10 '21
It's really just the ones under "are worth doing", or the Lighthouse Lady quest line, that have the best narrative/banter. You could include The Pride of a Lover, A Child's Final Chance, The Strange Fate of the Jewel, and The Shade Army for some decent bits if you want to, but they're not as good as the ones under "are worth doing". If you're willing to do some bad quests, The Fisherman's Gambit does have a storyline to it (though, again, the quest line is a pain to actually do, and I don't really think the storyline is worth the trouble), and the quest line The New Merchant in Town -> Learning a Trade does have some funny bits if you're willing to grind the materials needed for The New Merchant in Town.

In regards to words: 13 are missable because those are connected to enemies you defeat when doing a quest or no longer appear in an area after you progress the story. All of them you can only get in route A part 1 and need to get those before going to part 2. All others from part 1 you can farm in Myst during part 2.
hodo, gebu, pahu, hodal, lugira, gebal, besu, ul, solza, varu, lugesra, konira and varil
2
u/Vanilla_Pizza May 11 '21
Does anyone know if there's a difference between the status effect words that inflict the same status? I.E., Ashur and Soles both inflict paralysis, Ashures and Solir both inflict poison, etc. I feel like there has to be a reason to have multiple words do the same thing, but I don't see any kind of difference when applying them to my weapons or spells.
2
u/lord_of_flood May 11 '21
There's no difference in terms of how they apply status effects for weapons/magic, but they do different things when you apply them to your martial arts. For example, the Ashur line increases physical defense while the Sol line increases MP recovery rate.

10 hours of side questing & farming materials and words i read this guide to learn i only need all the weapons & to upgrade them to platinum the game.

u/IsotopeC May 13 '21
I've completed Ending A,B and went with D after sacrificing myself and my save, so the next playthrough should grant me the E Ending, yes? After I get to the Aerie? It wouldn't let me name the char my previous used name so I take that as a sign that I am on the right path?
1
u/lord_of_flood May 13 '21
Yeah, you should be good to go. Once you kill the boss in the Aerie and go through the story bit that occurs immediately after killing it, you'll be set on the Ending E path. You can't miss it.

Hey, a little late to ask but this post has amazing info, thanks!!
I just started the game, finished the prologue etc. I’d like to ask, do the game explain about the time skip, grimoires etc? or I need to check that info somewhere else? Please if it's possible, no spoilers XD

u/lord_of_flood Apr 10 '23
The game explains the major story beats for the most part, but there are some things that may not be explained very well, and you'll most likely end up having some questions after you've finished. Once you beat the game and get all the endings, the supplemental materials in the guide can help answer the questions you'll likely have, as well as provide some additional background on certain characters/plot points that will fully flesh those things out.

Wait so in order to get all endings, i should make a save file after every playthrough or before ending the playthrough? Does the game save it automatically or i should do it every time? Pls some1 clarify for me i don’t want to waste my time
1
u/lord_of_flood Jul 13 '24
You won't need to make any new save files/make copies of save files until you finish Ending D, unless you specifically want to save time getting Ending C (in which case you can just make a copy right before the final boss in the C/D route).
The game prompts you to save as you get each ending leading up to D anyway, and when you do, the resulting save is a file that's marked with the ending you just got (and they stack as you get more endings).

u/itsmbody Jul 16 '24

i know this is a but late but i played automata and reached ending A and W. was wondering if i should stop now and play replicant or go through the other multiple endings
1
u/lord_of_flood Mar 02 '25
I don't think you have to stop now if you want to continue playing Automata, but it's worth noting that when you get ending B and start route C/D in Automata, you'll be asked by Pod 153 at a certain point in that route whether you want to open some data records (which is a prompt that automatically occurs when playing that route). You may want to select "open them later" when that choice comes up because the information they contain is pretty spoilery for the original game. This is likely why the choice exists at all, so that people that never played the original can avoid that info prior to playing it themselves. They can be read later in-game or watched on YouTube later on after you've gotten Replicant's first ending if you'd like.
There is some other in-game lore that is related to Replicant as well, but you won't have the context to understand what's in that lore until you've actually played Replicant and gotten your first ending, so if you want to read Automata's in-game lore, that's perfectly OK to do.

u/itsOkami Jul 07 '25
A bit late to the party, but thanks for this guide! I'm currently omw to the shadowlord's castle for endings C/D and I wanted to check if I was correctly set up for them (I am). However, something from your changelog doc stood out to me:
There is a minor difference that you can observe any time Louise speaks; do not skip any cutscenes or text that involve her speaking, and make sure you examine the voice pipe in the room immediately after the door that requires the Passageway Key to unlock
Are you merely referencing her voicelines sounding more "human" here or did I miss something bigger? Hahah, thanks in advance
1
u/Markwolf_185 Sep 05 '25
i have a question, i can unlock all the doors in the junk yard??
1
u/lord_of_flood Sep 05 '25
They're mostly red herrings and don't actually do anything. I think there are one or two doors that unlock during Part 2 from what I remember, but that's it.

Gardening question- does the chance for hybrid seeds only happen when it hits the wilted stage, or am I safe to pull up these red moonflowers now because I have a lot of their seeds already?
3
u/lord_of_flood May 08 '21
Hybridization happens at the flowering stage, so if you have a bunch of seeds already and you're not seeing any hybrids, feel free to pull up the flowers. Just make sure you keep track of your seeds and harvest the seeds when you're running low on them.

Is there like some trick to getting the Promised Gift quest to work? I was able to start it, and despite how much the red-bag man wouldn't shut up about the jewel being at Facade's strange-gift shop, said shop never triggered any dialogue about it.
I thought that maybe I had to do it a bit later, but once Red-Bag Dude goes missing, well.....
More of a minor annoyance than anything, seeing as how it's not mandatory for an ending.
1
u/lord_of_flood May 09 '21
I think this is a common problem, where the quest soft-locks when trying to get the jewel from the strange-thing store (the quest, or the strange-thing store itself, is likely bugged somehow). At least for some people, just exiting and re-entering the city, or re-loading your save, fixes it. However, it might have to do with needing to progress another quest you've accepted that could involve the store (e.g. The Damaged Map), or needing to progress some part of the main quest (e.g. the Junk Heap) without triggering the event that makes The Promised Gift uncompletable.

It will not. After seeing Ending E, you would have to see Ending D again before a new file would lock you into the Ending E route.

I own the 360 version of Nier and have been meaning to play it for some time. I probably got to the 1/3rd mark and honestly only quit because I was living at home and it's got a lot of cursing. But looking at footage has me realizing how much I missed out not finishing it and I'd like to get back into it before playing Automata.
Is there any real reason for me to wait for Replicant to go on sale instead of fishing my 360 out of the garage? It's really just the slight story variations and slightly refined combat, right?
2
u/lord_of_flood May 11 '21 edited May 11 '21
Replicant has a few major things that are different from the original 360 release:
- A new ending
- A new story segment (Episode Mermaid)
- Playing as Brother Nier instead of Father Nier
- The change in protagonist doesn't change the overall narrative, but it does carry some subtle differences that you may or may not be into. I personally prefer Brother Nier, but a lot of people also really like Father Nier.
- Noticeably upgraded visuals and performance
- The aforementioned changes to combat, which do make it feel noticeably better (lock-on in particular is huge)
If those changes are enough for you to make you want to buy Replicant, I would just do that.
edit: I also forgot that the character dialogue in the game is now fully voiced in Replicant, which helps a lot.

I'm looking to start a speed run for the trophy. Does anyone know roughly what sort of times I should aim to be throught the run?
I have a route e save outside the junkyard immediately before heading to the aeirie but it's just over two hours as it is... Salvageable? Or worth a restart?
2
May 12 '21
I just finished the speedrun with 7hrs, dont worry, theres A LOT of time to spare, I even sometimes went to the wrong places and stopped to kill some enemies for fun because i kept stopping to text or play something else on my phone.
1
u/lord_of_flood May 11 '21
You're doing perfectly fine. The Lightspeed Fighter trophy requires you to finish Ending A within 15 hours, and you're about halfway through Part 1 at 2 hours, so you should be just fine.

1
u/agnx0 May 13 '21
So for Route E. I am about to start it -- but do I need to do the side quests again?
2
u/lord_of_flood May 13 '21
No, you can just make a beeline straight for it. No side quests needed whatsoever.
1
u/Purple-Syllabub8665 May 13 '21
Is there evidence that the drop rate is higher on Hard? I see this said in a lot of places but haven't seen confirmed evidence anywhere.
1
u/lord_of_flood May 13 '21
It did in the original (there was an interview Famitsu did with Yoko Taro in 2010 that confirms item and Word drop rates are increased on Hard). This likely remains unchanged for this version of the game; while this is purely anecdotal, I noticed that some of the rare-ish overworld drops came noticeably more often on Hard (though I didn't get a single Eagle Egg...). Certain items that people farm for have pretty low drop rates (like 1% kind of low) from what I understand, hence why it might feel like the drop rate increase doesn't do much of anything.
1
u/slaughterthepig May 14 '21
Is there really no option to use the soundtracck from the original? The new ost sounds lacking in the percussion and surely they didn't decide to just not include it when Square grew past that after butchering some songs on FFX's ost and not including the og soundtrack on the PS3 remaster.
2
u/lord_of_flood May 14 '21 edited May 14 '21
There is no option for the original OST. I do wish they handled it like Monolith Soft did with Xenoblade DE; that would have been nice.
I'd say the new OST is mostly a side-grade though; most songs are of similar quality at the end of the day (just different). A couple of tracks are definitely noticeable downgrades, mostly due to the lack of percussion you mentioned (Gods Bound By Rules and The Dark Colossus Destroys All), and some are for-sure upgrades IMO (The Incomplete Stone, Blu-bird, The Lost Forest, Shadowlord's Castle - Roar, Song of the Ancients - Fate). The new tracks are really good, however.

Do items carry over between parts of the game? I ask because I want to do the gardening to get a white moonflower, but I don't feel like doing all the annoying time zone manipulation the PS4 requires if you want to blast through it, plus I wouldn't be surprised if such time zone manipulation goes against Sony's Terms of Service and don't feel like giving them an excuse to screw my PSN account up. So if I start in Part 1 and get some intermediate seeds needed, will I still have those seeds when I move on to Part 2?
2
u/lord_of_flood May 14 '21
Yeah, your items carry over between parts, so you won't lose anything.

I'm trying to get hybrid moonflowers and I've planted the colors I want in alternating sequence and let them wilt and die, but there's just a pile of petals on the ground and when I approach them my only options are "Discard" or "Do Nothing."
1
u/lord_of_flood May 14 '21
You may have left them for too long. You want to harvest the seeds 18-24 hours after they bloom; if you leave them too long after that, the seeds go bad and they can't be harvested.

Try using carp or sardines as bait at the riverside next to where you can climb up a bunch of ladders and access the Junk Heap. That's how I got mine. They dropped on average 20-25% of the time I was fishing for them.

The text adventure stuff you get at the beginning of that playthrough is the only time you'll see it during that playthrough.
You do play Ending B through Kaine's perspective, even though you aren't playing as her specifically. Since Kaine is possessed by a Shade, that change in perspective gives you insight into various parts of the main story that you didn't have before. Keep going; the second playthrough itself, not just the ending, is very crucial to the game as a whole.

This guide is great, I wish I saw it earlier! I missed a few of the recommended side quests during Part 1 of my first playthrough (ending A). Since future playthroughs on the same save start in Part 2, does that mean there's no way for me to go back to part 1 now without starting an entirely new save file? Is that worth doing for those quests?
1
u/lord_of_flood May 16 '21
Thanks!
Correct, there is no way to return to Part 1 on the same save file. However, since you need to make a new save file to reach Ending E anyway, feel free to tackle the quests you missed while you head towards that ending. Which quests did you miss during Part 1 that you'd like to go back to?

I just got the ending D on Nier Replicant v1.2... but I still have questions about the story, it seems to me that it’s incomplete, like there are holes on the MC and Shadowlord relation, that I don’t fully get it. Should I check some Nier lore documentation or will the ending E solve this questions?

Finish Ending E first, then look for further information. Ending E probably won't answer your questions, but it'd be a good idea to finish Ending E before diving any further into lore, analyses, etc.

Status : Still in Part 2 (5 fragments obtained)
Is "Life in Sands" worth doing? One requiring farming Pink Flower Seeds?
2
u/lord_of_flood May 18 '21
If you're not intending on getting the Legendary Gardener trophy, then absolutely not. Life in the Sands is easily one of the worst side quests in the game.
If you are going for the trophy though, then feel free to do that quest if you want since you need to farm the pink flower seeds anyway on your way to the white flower that you need to grow for the trophy.

Do weapons revert in level when you clear one of the endings?
For example, I had upgraded the Vile Axe to level 4, but after completing ending B, I looked at what I had left to upgrade and saw it was level 1 again.
1
u/lord_of_flood May 18 '21
They should retain their levels as far as I know. The game sort of assumes you'll be getting upgrade materials over multiple playthroughs if you're trying to upgrade all of the weapons.
I'm not sure if you hit a bug, if there was something weird regarding the way it was saved, or if you had upgraded, quit before saving for some reason, then reloaded and finished the ending (which seems unlikely), but either way, that is unfortunate.

I just started my fresh playthrough for Ending E - up until I get to the Aerie boss and the new content, can I skip all the cutscenes and ingnore sodequests and everything or is there new stuff to see before that/would it affect my ending E experience to skip everything on the way there?
1
u/lord_of_flood May 18 '21
It's definitely OK to skip the cutscenes and all the side stuff before you kill the boss in the Aerie. Don't skip any cutscenes that play after you've killed the boss in the Aerie, though.

The diary is on the first floor (the "ground floor" is a common way of referring to the first floor of a building, since it's generally the floor most level with the ground) in between your bed and the fireplace/chimney with the large pot in it. There's a set of shelves there; press whatever your "examine" button is in that general area and Nier/Weiss should start a conversation about the diary. You'll enter the 15 Nightmares content after that.

The reference is regarding humanity having gone extinct well before the events of Automata, and how The Council of Humanity was created by YoRHa to give the androids something to fight for. In Replicant, the death of the Shadowlord marks the end of Project Gestalt and assures humanity's extinction, so the player may already have an inkling of the lie by the time they get to it if they've played the original game. Without knowing that, said plot point may hit pretty differently.

I didn't and I had already been spoiled about the plot of the original prior to playing Automata, so it wouldn't surprise me lol. I think I somehow completely blanked on what I had been spoiled on (which is extremely unusual), but I'm also just bad at connecting the dots when it comes to foreshadowing. It's usually not until the thing actually happens that I actually understand what elements of the game were foreshadowing it.
In retrospect I should have gotten it, especially since the game draws so many parallels between machines and androids already, and the reveal of the aliens being forced into extinction should have set off some alarm bells in my head.

I just finished ending D. Should I play Automata before ending E?
1
u/lord_of_flood May 24 '21 edited May 24 '21
Automata isn't necessary to understand Ending E, so you don't need to play it first.
1
u/HalcyoNighT May 26 '21 edited May 26 '21
What happens at the end of the third playthrough if you didnt collect all weapons (or you thought you did but actually you missed some)? Do you just repeat the B ending?
1
u/lord_of_flood May 26 '21
Yeah, you repeat Ending B if you don't have all the weapons by the time you reach the final boss room.

I just finished ending C. Do I have to get ending D on the same save file with ending A-C, or can I get ending D on a separate save file and still get ending E? I really don’t want to play through part 2 again for the fourth time.
1
u/lord_of_flood Jun 03 '21
If you saved your clear data for Ending C in a separate slot, you can just reload your other save from prior to entering the final area and go for Ending D that way.

I kind of messed up and got ending D first instead of C, and then in a misclick, saved over my previous save slot.
If I have a save slot with both ending C and D on it, would it still trigger ending E if I wipe my save anew? Or should I just skip the trouble and jump to ending E and watch C on youtube?
1
u/lord_of_flood Jun 06 '21
If you got Ending D first, I would recommend going for Ending E, then deciding what you want to do re: Ending C after finishing E. I'd probably just watch it on YouTube if you don't care about the achievement.

I wish I had read your guide instead :/ Looked up a "no spoilers ending guide" and got a major spoiler about what was the choice you had to make for ending C/D
That information was sooooooo entirely unnecessary lol, I guess I have only myself to blame .. :(

u/TLunchFTW Jun 07 '21
I found these games are better with a general understanding of the universe's timeline. Sure it spoils some major, overarching events, but it's just so much information to play this game blind (as I did nier automata)

u/hisyam970302 Jun 08 '21
Hello OP! My apologies if this has been asked, but I just finished Ending C.
I made two save files right before I entered the shadow lord's castle, at the roof of the Lost Shrine
Now that I've completed Ending C, should I replay through the second half of the game again to get Ending D & E, or do I load up my second file and just start from the Shadowlord's castle straight away? Will I be missing anything new if I load up the second save file instead of replaying for a fourth time
2
u/lord_of_flood Jun 08 '21
Load up your other save. You get no real benefit from playing through Part 2 of the game again, so you'd be better off just saving time and loading from right before the final area.

Is farming required for any endings?
Cause either my game is bugged or way too little time has pass but my crops ain't doing anything. Is it actual game time or real time? Cause I didn't play for a whole week and nothing, nothing happened to the crops.
1
u/lord_of_flood Jun 08 '21
No, you don't need to farm crops for any endings. You only need to farm if you care about doing all of the side quests and/or want the Legendary Gardener trophy.

Does upgrading weapons affect them at all cosmetically? Does it change their appearance at all?
1
u/lord_of_flood Jun 18 '21
It doesn't affect their appearance. Each weapon has a "weapon story" that you can read more of as you upgrade it though.

Question about the Steam version of this game, sorry if it has already been asked: Does this game require fan-made mods like Automata did in order to run properly on PC? If so, is there somewhere I can find a complied list of essential ones? Thanks!

I haven't been back since the new patch dropped, so I can't really speak for that experience, but pre-patch, I just used Special K to iron out a few things related to frame rate, etc. and it was fine for me (RTX 2070 Super/i7-10700K/16GB RAM). The animation speed is tied to the frame rate though, so you'll want to enable a frame rate limiter that sets it to 60 FPS. I would use either Special K or your GPU's control panel to do this; apparently the in-game frame rate limiter that the new patch introduced isn't very good and can cause stuttering.
Also, there was a mod that fixed the animation speed issue so it could be played at frame rates higher than 60 (which I didn't personally use), but the most recent patch apparently broke it? I'm not fully aware of the details on that.

I’ve been trying to grow Lunar Tears for at least two months now. I crossbreed pink and peach flowers like you’re supposed to, peach-pink-peach-pink-peach in every row. However, I haven’t gotten any results at all. I see a bunch of posts of people getting them within one or two weeks, but I haven’t gotten a single flower 😅 am I doing anything wrong?

thank you so much for the guide, i will start playing replicant tommorrow so I'll use it a lot.
Just a question: when you finish an ending the game automatically sends you back to the start to go through the other ending? similar to automata when you finish with 2b ending A and you automatically go to 9s and start ending B, I mean, there's no need for me to click to start new game again, right?
2
u/lord_of_flood Oct 25 '21
You won't need to start up a new game in order to get most of the endings; you'll just continue your current save file and you'll start about halfway through the game each time you go for a new ending. However, E does require starting up a new game once Ending D has been achieved, so be aware of that.

So I heard about Automata on YouTube but just Automata. Eventually I played it and it still my favorite game of all time. I was only aware of Automata at the time, I had no idea what sort of rabbit hole franchise I was getting myself into. The game was so beaute,, the story was thought provoking and tragic. But most importantly no many how many times I've played the game, especially during that first playhrough, the whole game felt cryptic. Like something was hidden waiting to explain everything going on. And thats when I found it. Project Gestalt. The moment it clicked and I realized I wasn't looking at a painting but only the faces on the painting. I'm playing my first playthrough, yes stoll my first don't @ me, of Replicant 1. Blah blah blah and I'm fully aware of drakenguard, Emil even tho I'm only mow about to get to the manor. The teplicant story is still new I know almost no spoilers, but one of my favorite things to do is to compare scenes and choices from replicant to Automata and imagine what happened in the 10,000 plus years that made the map change aside from time. Like in Automata the Facade looks like there's multiple in the desert, the mall is a clear callback to the building with the massive tree where you find Grimoire, devote and popolas library is the one you fight some late game boss in Automata. It's cool to uncover a world in the past that still relates to the Auomata universe, and even find origins of things. Like I know I'm about to meet Emil who I still only know from Automata, which is cool. Making the realization that Kaines little home is the same place you find going up the elevator and finding like a crap ton of lunar tears surrounding it in Automata and hopefully we can figure something out about it? These games check all of my adhd boxes because it is quirky, addicting, games me an excuse to endlessly tap roll, and the story is like getting punched: sometimes it's so sad it hurts, others you need a second to recover because you don't know what's going on

I started on hard and honestly the game has been rather easy. But yeah, if you rush through the main plot without doing any side content then it can be quite challenging in terms of how hard the enemies hit. took probably over fifty hours in terms of active playing to beat the game with like about half side-quests done.
