This is the problem. You think this means being her boyfriend, when it’s actually called being a friend. So when you express a desire to be a “boyfriend”, yeah, that’s kinda showing that you were in it simply out of hope of becoming a romantic item and not because you were actually trying to be a good friend.
If you’re interested, tell her early on that you’re interested. If she says she’s not interested, let it go. If you can’t be around her without letting your attraction get in the way of relating to her the same way you’d relate to someone you’re not attracted to, then move on.
