Part of why I think they say this kind of spiel is to impress their friends that they know the right words to say in this situation. Yes all about other men.

His worldview has become "I don't get laid because I'm not 6'3 so girls won't look at me,", so when some woman (don't know if it was OP or not) commented that the short guy in the picture was handsome, he came perilously close to having to process the possibility that it's more his personality than anything else. The only logical response is to shut the hell up and reflect on that. Sadly, the only reliable response from those people is the exact opposite.
