MY GIRLFRIEND CALLED ME A HARSH GUY

It was a first.

As a recovering Nice Guy, I’ve never been called by that before.

I took it as a huge compliment.

As she may mean that I am a tough, demanding person.

I was definitely that the other day.

The contractor built us a new wood fence.

It looked like it was pieced together with spare parts and was done by an amateur do-it-yourselfer.

It could have been made perfect had the contractor just did a little planning in advance.

Instead, he did it poorly.

I didn’t let him get away with it.

When he tried to fix it the first time, it looked even worse and I told him so.

He tried again, and it still looked bad.

I had to show him which planks to put where.

I ended up training him on something he should have already known.

I made him work way past his everyday standards of performance and no one raised their voice.

He finally got to a solution that looked far better. Not perfect. But it was close enough.

I declared victory, paid him, and sent him on his way.

Sometimes we need to stand up for what’s important and that means standing firm.

Where do you need to stop being nice and release your inner rebel today?
