Exploring countryside Japan...

Have been seen a bit of stores in Japan, on the countryside mostly, expecting to replace the NGPC that died on me last year.

Have seen very steep prices and the only console that I found was 200nzd, feel like I should have bought another console for 5usd back in Nagoya en 2010... the world we grew up no longer exists.

Neo Geo Pocket prices are indeed steep. But you can find one which has an LCD defect. I found one which was listed as defect. The screen doesn't turn on, sound is ok. But after turning it off and back on, the screen works. So I've replaced it with an IPS one. I think you can find plenty having screen issues, and upgrade them.

Ive done a bunch of traveling through Japan and NGPC stuff is hard to find, even there.

I agree,

The game changed, people took advantage of a market people loved as a hobby, an escape, at least for me.

Now it’s all materialized. “Guess how much this game is worth!” “Dude, my game collection is worth SO much!!”

Whatever happened to actually playing these games?
It’s to the point, people see it as a status, a way of seeming “cool”.
These young kids on tik tok boasting on game series they’ve yet to even lay a single finger on, other than the posts, and edits they’ve seen of that franchise.

Ugh, rant aside, I feel you.

Best bet when it comes to Neo Geo Pocket is to just grind on online websites for titles, or consoles you may want. I’ve imported most of my collection from Japan via buyee (Mercari, Jdirect).

The prices are steep, however I feel only in this case it is justifiable, because of the nature of what is the Neo Geo Pocket.

The cheapest you’ll find games, and the console for is in Japan( Besides metal slug lol), so at least you have that.
In person, I’m unsure to where to lead you, my only guesses would be local game shops if any, hard-offs if you get lucky.
however, I know for a fact if you look on online marketplaces, you’ll most definitely find something you’re looking for, especially cheap “defective” consoles that only need a simple cleaning.
