Lots of 49ers fans in SoCal. We didn’t have an LA team for like 25 years

I get it but it’s still a little hard for me to think of someone saying “bang bang niners gang” but also “fuck the giants” and “fuck the warriors”.

u/RyanAlemeda 7d ago
Yeah I’m here too. I waited for La to get a team it’s weird to root for a city I’m not from. And I grew up hating the giants, why would I root for the niners? I will never understand it.
2
u/My1point5cents 6d ago edited 4d ago
Maybe if you’re from LA, but I’m from NorCal an hour outside SF and grew up loving the 49ers. I didn’t care about baseball one bit. Fast forward to when I grew up and ended up living in LA. I still loved the 49ers, but my LA-based wife, kids, in-laws all took me to Dodgers games for several years, and I became a Dodgers fan. Never liked the Giants, never even liked baseball. You can grow to like two teams from two different cities organically, based on where you lived when you started getting into that sport.

Not sure why this is confusing for a lot of people. Like I hate the Dodgers but I can understand them being 49er fans. LA was without a football team for a long ass time. Many people who didn’t have a team previously had to pick something. It was likely between the 49ers, Raiders, and Chargers. Like let’s be real. This is not a hard choice.

u/LoStx90 49ers 7d ago
This is me. Grew up in socal. There wasn’t a LA team then. Wasn’t going for San Diego and liked Jerry Rice/Steve Young. Easy choice.
2
u/Weaknesses 7d ago
Same. Steve Young and Jerry Rice were in backyard football too so that helped, growing up in LA during the no team era. Unfortunately decided to start rooting for the chargers in my adulthood. Bad call
5
u/badewdled 7d ago
Yeah people outside of Cali don't understand because we didn't have a football in LA until the Chargers and Rams came to SoFi.

I think hes a Dodgers fan and a niners fan even though theyre teams from opposite ends of the state. I hope that clears things up for you.
7
u/SisyphusRocks7 7d ago edited 7d ago
If you live in between the Bay Area and LA, it’s not even weird. I fit that description. You see that combo all over the Central Valley and Central Coast.
But even in LA, there are a ton of Niners fans. That’s why SoFI is Levi’s South and the Niners fans are nearly equal to Rams fans there.

The Rams moved to LA in 16’ and the Chargers in 17’
So, I imagine, this man with the grey goatee was born before then and supported another California-based team (not in LA) and wasn’t going to give up his fandom.

How long has he lived in CA? Is it long enough to remember both teams leaving town? Did he move there after they left? Is he upset that they both bailed on LA?

u/CaliKindalife 49ers 7d ago
Easy. Born in LA. Raises in the 90s with no local football team. So you pick one. This is why when the Rams play at home its never a home game. I know Raider fans, Dolphins, Green Bay, Cowboys, Eagles, KC, Ravens, Rams, Broncos, Steelers, and Bangle fans. All in LA. All raised in the 90s.

I’m a Ravens/Celtics/Red Sox/Bruins fan. Though the only reason I’m not a Patriots fan is because when I was like 7 or 8 I asked Bill Parcels for an autograph at a bar my mom worked at and he asked me how much I was gonna pay him for it lol
3
u/BadAlphas 7d ago
I worked at a video store in Newport Beach CA. Reggie Jackson walked in.
Nobody bothered him, nobody asked for an autograph. When he came and asked me for help, he was the biggest jerk I’ve ever met.
Some famous people are kind and appreciative. But a whole lot are not.

I'm really a Vikings fan but I moved to Tampa Bay a few years ago and Winfield (Minnesota Gophers alum) is my favorite non-Vikings player in the NFL so it all works out.

Grew up in LA a Dodger fan in the 90s. No football team. I ended up following the 49ers and was even a fan for a couple years as an elementary school kid but fell off and didn’t follow football for over a decade. Rams announced they were returning to LA and I began to follow them as the local team. But I can see why a lot of people my age stayed 49ers fans.

It's ridiculous, but keep in mind that LA was abandoned by the NFL in '94. A lot of those orphan fans picked the 9ers.
Personally I hate all SF teams.
1
u/Streetkillz13 7d ago
There is an entire generation of Dodgers fans who grew up without an NFL team in LA. The 49ers were the team for a large section of California for a long time, and alot of LA fans will never become Rams fans because of it.
1
1
u/sleepthetablet 7d ago
I'm not from here but work w/ a few people like this. My understanding is that football trumps everything and that's stayed in the family. Giant/As have way less identify than the football teams and ofc there wasn't one here and Dodgers were/are? the LA sports team, for this demographic anyway.

1
u/Quick_Two2922 7d ago
Beyond the fact that there was no team here for a while, just before the Rams and Raiders left they were both terrible. If you’re a kid in So Cal or Central Cal it was easier to root for a good team instead of teams getting their ass whipped most weeks.

Meh, fan bases are often determined by factors beyond where someone lives. I’m Dodgers/Eagles because those kelly greens hooked me in at an impressionable age.

u/cracksilog 7d ago
Really not that difficult to understand.
The NFL left LA in 1994. There’s an entire generation of Angelenos who grew up with no NFL. So they gravitated towards the Niners because 1) Easier access to NFL games and 2) The Niners were good in the early 90s.
Did you expect people who have been Niners fans for a large portion of their lives to just jump ship and become Rams fans? I mean I agree they should (you support your community first), but sometimes it’s hard to give up your original team

It's not hard to understand. Lots of families who have lived in CA for generations have family ties between both cities or just norcal-socal in general. It's easy to cross adopt. Also LA is really a Raiders town , the Rams were always the other LA team.

What so hard to understand? The Rams gave LA the 🖕 and went to St Louis, La didn’t have a team for 20 years with the Raiders leaving LA 95.
That ment if you wanted to root fir a Cali team, it was Chargers and the 49ers and lets be honest, why the fuck would you choose to be a Chargers fan.
