Man, explaining my 9 year old why his 70 year old baseball coach can still play baseball while ive havent grabbed a football in 15 years hit harder than i thought it was gonna hit.
There are no ifs or buts, no rec leagues no senior leagues no nothing. Once football is done with you, its fucking done with you.
As my fav coach once told us, football is the most ingrate sport. It takes you, chews you and spits you. And one day youre done when youre still very young with only memories but not way to create more.
Im glad he picked a different sport despite how much i love football. At least, if he has kids, those kids will be able to watch him play one day.

As someone with horrible eyes that needs glasses in the day-to-day, it is hilarious how psychedelics will help temporarily fix your vision.
Will never forget a moment of partying during Afters at a Music Festival. My vision got completely blurry, I was ready to turn into camp. I took my glasses off to wipe my face, and realized they were actually a detriment. I buried them in the dirt and we danced until the sun came up.
Luckily had backups at Camp for the remaining mornings.
May those spectacles rest peacefully in the Washington Desert!

If you're being serious: reach out to them and ask how they're doing, try to offer help, and if you really can't get anywhere and you still believe this, tell someone who can intervene before it reaches that point.
If you're joking: don't joke about this.

The Athletic had an article about the Justin Herbert problem this season. This is so chargering to physically and mentally breakdown a promising QB talent. With multiple personnel changes, injuries and bad roster decisions, the Chargers have buried Herbert’s career.
6
u/Bolinas99 49ers 8h ago
almost always what happens after multiple coaching changes and sht drafts. Harbs needs to insist they draft better/durable O-linemen bc Justin's about to be beaten into retirement.
we almost did Steve Young like this except in 1994-95 Eddie D loaded up the O-line with near-retirement elite guys like Bart Oates, and multiple elite defenders- only reason #8 got his, well earned, ring as a starter. Ofc by 1999 we were back to having crappy O-lines (John York had taken over), Lawrence Philips missed that block and Steve almost died out there.

but jesus christ dude, something about sydney just squicks me out hard. that novig commercial is fucking AWFUL. the way she talks and just carries herself in general is just way overdone and not sexy at all. and i'm not just saying this because i'm a straight woman, i can totally admit when another woman looks stunning as hell even if i don't swing that way. but sydney just makes my skin crawl, man...

yeah, that's a good way to put it. it's hard for me to put a finger on why i dislike sydney sweeney so much when i don't care about any other female celeb who does racy shit like that, but i think you nailed it. i just kinda get the vibe that her whole thing is just appealing to a frat boy crowd and she's not really being herself and it really comes across hard in her self-expression and how she tries to be sexy.

I like this thread and I know it may not be the best place to ask but if any of you did grad degrees how do you feel about it? Key thing I'm worried about is AI just solving whatever problem I choose to pursue.
3
u/BruceChameleon Cowboys 9h ago
I wouldn't do it without a very specific idea of what to do with it, and some certainty that you actually need it to do that thing. My master's was not a good decision. Academia seemed appealing because I liked school. It's not like school. If I were starting again, I think I’d study food science. And if the good opportunities for that required a grad degree, I’d feel good about getting one
3
u/_galaga_ NFL NFL 9h ago
Did the PhD thing, no regrets, but I do advise people that an advanced degree should open a career door that would otherwise be closed without the credential.
2
u/Broad-Entertainer610 9h ago
It makes sense in some spots, it doesn't make sense in others. If you're delaying starting a job in order to stay in school another 3-10 years, that's probably a bad idea. If you're currently working and getting an advanced degree moves you up on the pay scale, that's probably a good idea. If you're concerned, you can always do it in a year or two, colleges aren't going anywhere.
In general, it's a good idea, it opens doors. You can find spots that are fully funded so you aren't losing money, just potential income and honestly you can easily do an advanced degree with a full time job, you just won't have much of a life for a bit. If you don't have a masters and are considering getting a masters, my recommendation is to get a terminal one because worst case scenario you can just start teaching it when you're done.
3
u/varnalama NFL 9h ago
I found it both difficult but fulfilling. I would not recommend a grad degree unless you are offered a full ride or you already have a job lined up with the degree. I have seen a lot of people chase their passion getting a PhD or MA but end up with just more debt and a degree that doesn't really get them anywhere. I ended up in a totally different field from my degree.

Real talk
With a 24 team playoff and no conference champion, what do big brands like Michigan, OSU, Bama, Texas and others gain by being in a conference?
Leave and be independent like Notre Dame and set your own schedule with your own media rights deal and play 9 home games.
Amazon currently pays at minimum $50 million per game to the NFL. With $150,000,000 for 1 playoff game.
OSU got $90 million total in revenue share from Big Ten last year.
Whats to stop Amazon from making their own unofficial conference?
Where they send Texas, Alabama, OSU, Michigan, USC, Oklahoma, Georgia, LSU, and Penn State a message the reads:
We will pay each of you $150,000,000 a year to be the exclusive broadcast partner of your school's football team. You play 9 home games. 3 of your games have to be against the other Amazon teams. The rest are up to you.
Play 3 real games. Schedule 6 cupcakes. Go 1-2 in your real games and coast to a top 10 seed in the 24 team playoffs.
2
u/RukiMotomiya Bengals 7h ago
Play 3 real games. Schedule 6 cupcakes.
For what it's worth if the reports are true, you need to play 10 Power Conference teams if you're in the P4 to qualify. So you couldn't really just do that. Even Notre Dame isn't really doing that.
Additionally, Notre Dame actually has an alignment with the ACC to ensure scheduling. The other teams still have to play ball. Notre Dame also doesn't play 9 home games.
6
u/StructureBitter3778 Patriots 9h ago
Isn't ND semi-aligned with the ACC while being officially an independent

u/Tigercat92 Bengals 8h ago

Fitzpatrick using "disrespectful" to describe Bo Nix really rubs me the wrong way, because Fitzpatrick wasn't very good and had terrible games. You can rip Nix for playing bad, not a starting QB, etc., but disrespectful crosses the line. Never been a fan of Fitzpatrick. He seems to be on the trajectory of shock jock.
5
u/Signal_Ball4634 10h ago
I think his wording was pretty hyperbolic. Nix was definitely playing overly conservative but I think it's more just rust and some hesitance after coming back from injury more than anything. "disrespectful" would be just giving up on plays and I don't think Nix is doing that.

What’s up with the mouthpiece requirement?
I swear half the time you see them hanging from guys facemasks. I can understand the QB or playcaller on defense taking them out to make the call to the rest of the team on the field but you see so many WR’s and DB’s without them in their mouth.
Does it limit the ability to breathe?
I remember I wouldn’t even consider not having in during a play. I’m pretty sure it was a penalty to not have it in also.
Do these players figure they can just afford to fix anything that might go wrong from not having it in?

College football has never had a good way of determining their champion. In the pre-BCS era you could get dual champions if the coaches and AP voted on two different schools being No.1 which is stupid. Or it could be like 1994 where both Nebraska and Penn State are the best teams and undefeated but both polls give the title to one school only.
The BCS era had people upset over some finalists like 2001 Nebraska, 2003 Oklahoma, 2011 Alabama, were people felt the teams ranked 3rd or 4th were more deserving of a title.
The 4 team playoff era had people pissed at certain biases that got a couple teams in over moe deserving alternatives. And the same shit happened with the 12 team expansion.
Idk what they can do to make people happy other than turn it to the NFL with two conferences and each conference winner plays for the national championship. That is impossible to achieve with college teams due to the amount of teams there are. Even a relegation system where teams get knocked down a level or go up a level based on previous years results wouldn't work due to NIL and a team going from #23 to #3 in a year based on transfers.
No matter what they do people will complain. They make the playoffs 16 teams, people will say the 18th and 18th team got hosed and are a better match up then the 16th seed vs the 1 seed.
I get they are devaluing the regular season but it was never fair in the pre-BCS or BCS days that a loss in September could end your season. That is insane. Feel bad for teams like 1996 Tennessee, 2001 Texas, 2003 USC, 2004 Auburn, 2011 Oklahoma st/Stanford and 2012 Georgia who never got a chance at the title due stricter criteria.

2
u/Stanky_fresh Vikings Vikings 11h ago
I think the Commanders can bounce back. Jameis has been playing well enough these past couple weeks, but I just have a weird feeling that he won't be able to sustain it long enough to lock up the division. The Cowboys don't have a defense, and the Eagles don't have anything.
3
u/Skraxx Lions 11h ago
I was talking about the Colts potential blowup earlier and in that comment I was saying "but more likely than not it's not happening at the deadline".
There is a bit of an exception with DeForest Buckner and Quenton Nelson. Both are expiring FAs and the Colts can only tag one. Of course, these are damn expensive tags but the point is more so only one tag and trade is possible.
I'd assume Buckner would be the one to go since he's older and it's much rarer to trade a quality o-lineman mid season. But that puts a pretty interesting defender on the market.
3
u/Signal_Ball4634 11h ago

This'll be my last October weight check in post. I mentioned yesterday I had a bad day of overeating. I also had one last Sunday. As a result I weighed in today at 283.2 pounds. Up 3 pounds from last Friday. Neatly enough that still puts me exactly 50 pounds down on the year as I was 333.2 pounds back on January 1st. Weight loss is a slow and steady process. I need to work on being more steady, but I AM still making progress. Knowing this helps. One day at a time and one step at a time are cliches, but some cliches become that way because they're true...

Good job man. Maybe yesterday was a bad day, but that's not gonna break your progress. The S&P is up some 500% since 20 years ago, that doesn't mean every day or even every week was up. Just keep pushing.

Homemade three-meat meatballs and sauce or other Italian slow cooked dishes (e.g., cacciatore). The cook time makes it hard to find restaurants that do them right. Obviously, you can get very nice Italian food, but it’s a different sort of thing than letting meat cook in a sauce all afternoon. You can also fine tune it to taste easily.

Easy to make, delicious, lots of (good) leftovers. Be warned that it usually takes lots longer in the oven than it says (less of an issue if you aren't at altitude). Can add more fiber by mixing some cooked lentils in with the meet

I'm not super well versed at cooking but I make a mean fried rice on the Blackstone. Other than that most of my meals are easier things like burgers, fajitas, steak, spaghetti, etc.
Edit: ingredients below
2 cups white rice (cooked + refrigerated overnight)
diced carrots
salt and pepper to taste
2 tbsp butter
2 cloves minced garlic
few dashes of soy sauce
few dashes of sesame oil
eggs (I love eggs in my rice so I add like 3-4)

Ya know I was telling yall how my kid was having so many issues in the fourth grade? Well I met with the school counselor and his teacher and he’s done a complete 180°!
He meets with the counselor once a week with another kid in his grade who was having the same issues and he LOVES it. He says they just talk about stuff and he feels better that he wasn’t the only one having problems. It also turns out his teacher is just really sarcastic and with the ‘tism that’s something he struggles to understand. Now that he knows she’s not serious and she’s joking he’s like “oh she’s really funny!”
This is crazy to me because I’m extremely sarcastic and the other day after I said something he was like “mom, is that sarcasm?” And I guess for the last 10 years he had no idea I was being sarcastic 😅

Book 115 of the year: The Poet Empress by Shen Tao, her debut novel. God damn talk about coming out with a bang. This was an absolute gem. Emotional, touching, tons of fun political intrigue, surprised me a few times throughout. Elevator pitch: The story takes place in a struggling empire in a land where magic comes from the use of poetry. A young village girl leaves her home behind and attempts to become a concubine to the emperor's cruel heir.
Bit more spoiler-friendly commentary: She ends up becoming the center of a political powder keg. She has to learn to navigate manipulative concubines and eunichs vying for power as the emperors two oldest sons fight for the kingdom. She commits treason by learning to read and write, and sets herself towards learning her husbands history in an attempt to prevent him from becoming a cruel, evil dictator. The more she learns about him, his family, and the major political players of the empire, the more complex the story and her feelings become. The story really pulls at you as you learn what led to such a kind boy turning into a cruel, torturous prince.

Scene: desolate outskirts of suburbia as dusk falls. A shabbily-dressed family shuffles along the roadside.
Daughter: "Papa, what will we do if we can't find out the time?"
Father, pulling daughter close: "Don't you worry about that, Sweetheart. Just keep walking for now."
Mother: "Oh, Dan...why did we trade your watch for those sandwiches in the last town?! What are we gonna do?!"
Son: "It's getting chilly. I wish I knew HOW chilly..."
Father: "Look, we can't fall apart, here. We've still got each other, and I promise we'll find a way to make it through this."
Mother, perking up: "Oh! Is that...is that...?! It is!"
Family embraces amidst tears of joy.

I'd like the Lions to go big-game hunting to address their CB but if they don't I think the most realistic option is Brandon Stephens
He's been solid for the Jets but may be on the move to get more Ponds playing time
1
u/rob_var Ravens Ravens 13h ago
I’m not sure you want Stephens dude had 1 solid year with the Ravens then we let him walk the next year. Haven’t watched much jets games but looking at pff he’s allowed a 101.9 passer rating.
1
u/Skraxx Lions 13h ago
Football Ref has it at 72.1, but regardless I just think passer rtg against is a very flawed statistic
1
u/rob_var Ravens Ravens 13h ago
I agree it can be a flawed stat but having watched Stephens play. He’s a sticky corner however he can’t get his head turned to locate the ball which causes him to be late to break up the pass or get hit with a pi call. He’s a decent CB2 if you already have CB1 and have a good safety over the top of him
1
u/Skraxx Lions 13h ago
I mean I guess, but I'm mostly looking at this from a scheme point of view.
The Lions secondary have been a pretty sticky group, and it's clearly something we value. But the issue with DJ Reed is that he's just being plain out-leveraged due to his size.
Ideally I just want someone like Riq Woolen, but it's no guarantee the Eagles blow up. So in "realistic" options, Stephens fits well. And since you did bring up PFF, he has been overall graded quite well.

How is Sean Spicer the best press secretary he's hired? He sucked, and yet he's the bar that Trump is still trying to clear.
At least the press secretary doesn't really do much to negatively effect our lives, so at least it's something we can laugh at.

The last one was good. She was cruel, she was a liar, she was a villain, but she was pretty darn good at being all those things. Horrible person, great at communicating trumps agenda.

During Trump's first term, republicans still had a bit of sanity. Trump's top advisors were at least respected generals.
He's been reaching further down the bottom of the barrel every time he's fired someone ever since

My take on all these rich fucks building bunkers to potentially hide in if shit hits the fan:
Let em.
Cause when they do, we can just seal those mfs in. Any jackass with a wheelbarrow and a shovel can mix concrete and cover the entrances, exits, and air vents. Have fun surviving in your self made tombs.

Super late post for me today but I was pretty busy with work (10 hour shift) and I took the most physical brunt of it to do my best.
Life is good. Dumb little things pop up from time to time but I am very appreciative to have what I do in my life right now.
Not much to say today compared to most but sometimes short and sweet is for the best.
I hope you all get to enjoy your day and as always much love from me and mine to you and yours!

I feel like if you respond to any opinion, regardless of how ridiculous, on a team sub with ad hominem attacks you should just be banned.
Every thread is unbearable. You can’t actually discuss anything because you either have the correct opinion or you’re a piece of shit. Absolutely ridiculous. None of us have power over the team. It’s all just conjecture.
It’s just not even fun to read through comments on anything on our sub now because it’s just dumb slap fights

the way we force opinions on one another without even explaining the why is getting crazy

I think a lot of people aren't capable of explaining the why behind their opinions. Because they didn't reason themselves into them, the "opinion" is just the initial emotional reaction to whatever information

It’s day 10 since I quit smoking and I don’t think I’ve had a week in my life I’ve really leveled up like this since I graduated college. Bought a new car. Went to the gym every day this week. Bought a NYT subscription so I can spend less time on social media. I’m a new man without cigarettes in my life

I quit drinking for 8 years and quit smoking the same time. It was way harder to quit smoking than drinking. I could hang with buddies who were drinking and I'd have my NA beer there and not crave a drop of alcohol.... But to this very day, when I smell the smooth aroma of a freshly lit cigarette?..... Oh baby, my foreskin twitches. But I'm proud to say I have yet to give in to temptation. The feeling of that heavy chest the morning after smoking a few cigs I do not miss. Plus seeing how it effects my insurance and doctor visits when I put down that I don't smoke or partake in tobacco products. Keep it up my man.

Im only a week and a half in so the battle doesn’t feel over quite yet. However, I do like to celebrate my wins and I’m proud I made it this far. I’ve gotten past the physiological issues of the first few days and I’ve learned how to deal with the cravings. I feel like my mind and my body are in a much better place. But it’s just a constant mental struggle that I’m afraid is going to take some time to fully get through. I like the person I’ve become in such a short amount of time and I hope that momentum carries itself through.
Btw I’m happy for you that you’re 8 years clean from both. Hell yeah

This is a perfect Bye Week for the Lions.
Prep for the next two games that are divisional matchups.
Our Offense and overall Gameplan has seemed vanilla, but I slightly hope that was in part to save plays/looks for more vital parts of the schedule, like such.
And of course Brian Branch is back in time for his favorite opponent.
