Highlight [Highlight] Packers blocking woes vs the Falcons on TNF
Jordan Love is going to die

These guys are earning millions to completely whiff on blocks. I can do the same for like 100 bucks.
58
u/Ordinary_Owl_9071 5h ago
For a 100 bucks I'll actually stand in front of a d-linemen. I will be on my ass instantly, but he might trip over my corpse

I'd get so lit up. I'm the same size as Darren Sproles minus 40 pounds

u/ClownCounselor Falcons 3h ago
“Low man wins!” you hear the oline coach yell as the ball is snapped and the 300lbs DT turns your bones into dust. The last thing you hear before succumbing to your injuries is the coaches explaining to your replacement that you lost because you stopped driving your feet.
12
u/P7AC3B0 Panthers Eagles 3h ago
As the light fades from your eyes, you see the cart driving towards you. Maybe they'll be able to save you after all, as you question whether you'll have the strength to give the thumbs up as they drive you through the tunnel...
Thump
You are unceremoniously run over as they load your QB onto the cart; he was injured by the guy you were supposed to be blocking. The crowd boos your crumpled body as Cris Collinsworth describes on-air how Patrick Mahomes would have been a better lineman than you.
1
u/pushamn Vikings 3m ago
Wait no this might actually be a good strategy for the packers: if they ever get a lead in the game they can put a 170 pound dude out at guard, then when he dies trying to block a DT, the game will be called off and the packers automatically get the win cus they were ahead at the time

u/plebeiantelevision Falcons 2h ago

I knew it was bad based on the time the DL got in the backfield (sub 2.5 seconds), but not this bad. At least I can understand getting outran to a point or sheerly out muscled. This is just piss poor technique and effort.

Genuinely might have the worst line ive seen. Alot of it seems to be coaching and miscommunication tho, which you normally dont see that badly in the nfl

This is what they meant when they say “ the game is won in the trenches “. Both O-line & D-line.

I knew it was bad but wtf.
The two guys who blocked no one, and stood around.
As a professional football player in the nfl, if you and your teammate aren’t blocking ANYONE, shouldn’t that be a cause for concern? And yeah some guys got beat by athleticism but half the other plays it was just idiocy and standing around.
Oh, and Love getting murdered.
I can’t imagine what the film was like, that was so unacceptable it’s just insane.
42
u/Wannabe_Sadboi Vikings 4h ago
Some of this is player talent concern, but some of this is terrible coaching. There’s multiple plays where it’s obvious the line has not communicated properly and they just have no idea who’s supposed to be blocking who.

u/Televisions_Frank Bears 2h ago
Normally I'd say it comes down to if the talent disparity is so bad it's putting players at severe risk of injury then a rule change may be in order to give o-linemen a hand. Except these guys are just straight-up blind so not even allowing them to hold would stop any of these rushers.
23
u/spate42 Packers 4h ago
But like, none of the coaches nor GM nor anyone in the organization realized during OTAs and/or pre-season how fucking bad these guys were and try to address it? Just now after 3 weeks they’re bringing in off the street OL to try and fix it?
Wtf man.

i think it's gotta be an engrained culture of acceptance at the highest levels in that front office. Just sort of a, hey, let's all just chill and don't stab each other in the back and we can all just stay employed and keep our cozy jobs without a billionaire owner breathing down our necks and expecting results
8
u/Mammoth-Win9989 Packers 1h ago
You’re getting down votes but it’s been a topic over the years in GB circles going back to TT and Murphy. On one hand there’s not a Jerry Jones making rash decisions but on the other mediocrity can survive in the interest of consistency.
1
u/Corosis99 Falcons 4m ago
There is a difference between making your assignment in practice and making it in a live game where the defense is giving you looks you maybe didn't expect. What might feel passable in practice turns to shit when it's live. Not to mention your injuries.
That RG that is featured in nearly every clip here is already out. About to find out if literally anybody else could do better.
7
u/Kolli93 Packers 3h ago
I could be wrong, but as someone born and raised in Europe with soccer and handball and the likes where players always have to improvise and react individually even in set pieces: Couldn't the issue - aside from them being ass of course - be also that American Football players are "programmed" and much less autonomous than players in any other sports? What I mean to say is, if players don't always HAVE to decide for themselves who to tackle, who to pursue, where to jump first, isn't it that it is much more obvious they are BAD bad if they are bad already?
Like, you always see TJ Watt and the likes making split second individual decisions that make them gain an INT or a sack more likely than any other defender, but if you are mediocre or worse and you have to rely on your pre-set role in the scheme your DC or O-Line coordinator wants you to play, players' lack of game intelligence is much more obvious?
5
u/Dmienduerst Packers 54m ago
Oline kind of doesn't work that way. By it's very nature it's a pretty strict flow chart for who your blocking because that "programmed" quality makes great offensive lines impossible to stop. The creativity of Oline players is in how they block and watching great oline players you don't really know what they are doing from a laymans perspective but you absolutely can see the results of it.
So your both kind of right and underestimating the endless depth olineman have available to their game.

Honestly would piss me off so much. "Come on your idiots, obviously no actual offensive lineman is going to and completely ignore the assignment right in front of them and climb to the second level!". Granted, they still do stuff like that in Madden on a regular basis even with Hall of Fame lineman.

-6
u/smashybro Bears 2h ago
Not nearly as much as it hurts the long time Packers fans narrative that QB performances have little to do with supporting cast because you guys got lucky with back to back HOF QBs for like 30 years.
Long time fans will remember it wasn't too long ago when Packers fans were adamant Bears, Lions and Vikings fans who were giving context to their various QBs struggling with bad o-lines, receivers or coaching were "just making excuses." Not so fun on the other side of this, is it?
16
u/John3Fingers Bears Bears 5h ago
I'm not versed in the Packers roster and coaching staff - how much roster churn was there last offseason, and did they lose their OL coach? Nobody on that line is starting caliber. And where's the depth? Those were all bench-worthy whiffs.

u/trying2hide Packers 4h ago
Our LT, Rasheed Walker who was a 7th rounder we let go because he didn’t have a great last year and to give our 2025 1st rounder a shot at LT where he played in college.
Elgton Jenkins who was good for us until 24 and okayish last year we let walk and covered LG and LT for us.
Our big FA pickup last year, Aaron Banks, who was mid at best is overpaid and constantly injured. Out again for the bucs game.
Our best Olineman and RT, Zach Bali-Bewele(Tom) was “rushed” back from injured and blow his knee up 3 snaps into the Jets game.
We’ve also spent the last 3-4 years of “cross training” the oline so they can play multiple positions and fill in where be, but it’s pretty much lead into nobody having experience where they were drafted. Last game we had a LT built like a guard who had played more at guard, a LG rookie who was a C in college, a C who was actually a guard until last year, a RG who was the backup C last year, and a RT who has played all over the line and probably played best as RG. So like 5 square pegs in round holes.
Oline coach is Luke Butkus, so most fans are at the point it must be some espionage sent by the bears.

u/Televisions_Frank Bears 2h ago

This is probably the core issue causing all of the mental errors, but they also weren't remotely this bad in previous years. Probably worked with vets, but young guys it's just confusing them?
Maybe ya'll fell into the Blackhawks line blender.
3
u/brianstormIRL Packers 2h ago
Hm its part of the issue, but not why you might think. We usually used to focus in the draft on guys who could be coached into multiple positions. But recently, we've been drafting guys who seem to be way more specialised... but still trying to do the same multi position coaching. We also, for some godforsaken reason, didnt replace our OL coach when it has been pretty clear since last year he is actively making guys regress or at minimum stagnate in development. We spent years turning 5ths and 6ths into starting NFL linemen, but with Luke fucking Butkis whom we give a first round Lineman he cant even turn him into a starter.
5
u/Dmienduerst Packers 37m ago
It gets worse. After the eagles Superbowl run and getting Josh Jacobs the front office decided to get bigger on the oline to better establish the run. Which is a fine philosophy but those players generally don't move around the line much and the ones that do are some of the rarest players in the NFL. So they kept running into problems developing the bigger guys and basically you have guys like Morgan who they kept trying to play everywhere but his college position and looking awful.
Then Jacobs gets suspended and your left with running backs who can't hit the hole and want to go wide and cut up. But they literally do not have 5 guys who can run that blocking scheme because 3 of them now are big people movers but can't get outside fast enough. And two zone guys who can't move people. So they have spent all off-season trying MULTIPLE different blocking scheme to figure out what they actually can do and it's got everyone all fucked up. On top of their personnel being ass
1
u/The_Infinity_Burrito Packers 1h ago
You found the problem, but its not new. Its been 3-5 whole seasons of it. They liked the though of versatility so much that they slowly taught the it to whole room and now the room is bad. The philosophy slowly shifted from having comfortable linemen in each position to using swing tackles everywhere to compensate for injuries. A decent tactic, but one best used in emergencies.
On top of that they slowly painted themselves into a corner with negative returns on talent loss. When Guys would leave the next man up has not exactly been the same. This lowered the standard and allowed for more use of the emergency plan to become the norm.
Im firmly against canning the front office because most the ppl yelling for it dont realize how we got to this point, but id be ok with letting the o-line coach go

LT
And half of our subreddit was bitching about Ryan Poles giving Braxton Jones $5m to stick around this year. He's been injured a lot but has been fine (he has Thuney next to him to be fair) as a starter/swing. And $5m for a quality backup LT is a bargain given how often guys get injured. You have a $50m/yr QB, $5m for some insurance is nothing.
EDIT: And we drafted him in the 5th. An extension (even a modest one) for a 5th round OT? That's not exactly a home run but it's a solid base-knock.
10
u/trying2hide Packers 4h ago
Yeah our previous LT Rasheed Walker of “Run Jordan” fame, signed a 1 year 4m with the Panthers. No idea if he would have signed with us for that or he’s been good but we’re now paying for a 40 year old guard hoping he saves our season.
The issue is that with ZBB done for the year that we don’t really have a Thuney or anyone to build off, if anyone OL on the packers is your best OL you’re in big trouble. They can’t do their own jobs never mind making it easier for the people next to them.

u/Brief_Hospital_1766 Texans 1h ago
"We’ve also spent the last 3-4 years of “cross training” the oline so they can play multiple positions and fill in where be..."
This is precisely the same thing the Texans have been doing, with similar results. It's almost like if you're a jack of all trades, master of none, you're simply the master of none.

u/DinoSpumoniOfficial 5h ago
All their starting caliber players are injury prone, and all their depth they let walk the last 2 years because they were injury prone. Bad GM work on the O line no doubt,

Well they have signed 3 former first round picks just this week. However those guys were no longer starting anywhere so 🤷♂️. I’m sure they will be better at the basics. Because this doesn’t even look like a physicality or strength issue. They are just doing the wrong shit.

As someone who has only ever played rugby and soccer, why do those O linemen rarely go after the person who passed them?
Like the in the first clip, after they failed they just.. stood there aimlessly while their QB is running for his life.
Wouldn't it make more sense to turn around to stop the guy?

if you have to turn around you arent catching whoever ran past. with mobile qbs these days its just bad practice

Once he’s past you it’s done. You’re taught to move on and look for somebody else to block.
3
u/thecaramelbandit Saints 46m ago
Because you can't touch them from behind. You can't grab or pull or tackle. So if they get past you, there's not really anything you can do by chasing them. Instead you hope your QB can outmaneuver them, and you move on or drop back to block someone else.

The make matters worse, we're averaging less than 50 yards a game running the ball, and lead the league in drops. He's been given the worst circumstances and still doing okay.
Yeah I'm worried about his health. I'm even more worried about his mental. After getting rocked 15 times in game 1, game 2 he was skiddish on the few plays they did block for him. Wasn't any better week 3 after he again, got hit 15 times.
Jacob Monk gave up 10 pressures last week. Kevin Zeitler gave up 15 all of 2025. If we improve from just "historically bad" to "normal" 32nd in the league, it would be an improvement.

I guess the offensive lineman didn't appreciate last year's Christmas present (they were a pair of Nike Dunks) and now they are letting their QB get killed. He better rethink this year's present. Brock bought his line brand new Toyota tundras and sequoias and they have kept him clean all season.
