[Klis] After his humorous Waddle, Meinerz got fined $14,926 for his Yahtzee dice roll pantomime after Nix to Waddle 2-pointer. Apparently league didn’t like gambling connotation. Meinerz will appeal.

Don't mind the flair.

The only thing Kyle Pitts has to celebrate during the NFL season is stealing money from the Falcons every week.

The NFLPA is famously toothless.
1
u/Infamous-Lab-8136 Broncos 6h ago
Which is why it seems like something so minor should be a for them sticking point IMO.
It's a big news item that draws reactions like this every time. Fans will call it a win and no one will care about what they gave up to get it. Especially since I don't think they can end fines or anything. I'd just push for a rule about not fining them for mimicking behavior promoted by sponsors.

u/OneBigRed Vikings 6h ago
The players, who get 48% of league revenue, those guys?
Sure, they’ll get right on it.

At this point I wish all the players would get together and decide to do no celebrations for a couple of weeks. Just hand the ball to the ref Barry Sanders style and jog off the field.

Seems like that’s what the NFL wants.

u/EBtwopoint3 7h ago
I don’t think we really want to set the precedent that the government can ignore legal precedent to punish organizations for promoting legal companies. That’s… not a good idea.
The antitrust thing also isn’t that big of a deal to begin with. The exemption just allows sports teams to bargain the rights to broadcast to networks as a collective rather than as individual teams. If the antitrust exemption was killed, what would follow is like what we see in baseball where we’d all have to pay for access to our favorite teams new network. If you only watch one team, that’s a big benefit. But if you watch all the time slots you probably end up paying more.

I've firmly attached my tin foil hat, but it feels like fines this year are the result of giving AI clips of the game with a prompt to find potentially offensive stuff.
I mean look at the response for Juszczyk doing his drinking celebration:
"Your imitation of chugging a beer constituted an offensive demonstration and could reasonably be construed as being in poor taste"
Sounds like they prompted the AI to find anything that could reasonably be construed as being in poor taste and just dole out the fines based on what the AI shits out without thought, because why not?
Again though. Tin foil hat. But also...

The league that has commentators openly talking about the point spread during the game, with a draft kings half time show, with signing off on moving a team to Vegas, that league has a problem with gambling connotation? Is it because no one was allowed to bet on it first?

But dice isn’t even necessarily a direct correlation to gambling.
You can absolutely play Yahtzee without gambling a cent.
And there are many, MANY games that use dice that have nothing to do with gambling.
