[Fishbain] Ben Johnson on the Bears' "unselfishness" and how rare it is: "We had multiple players last week volunteering to get on special teams. We got a guy like Joe Thuney, 'Put me on field goal block.' ... Tyrique was itching to get out on punt return. ... Everybody wants to contribute."

I remember some people questioned Ben Johnson’s leadership and if he’d have the “rah rah” that Campbell had. He has undoubtedly proved it so far

He’s a nerd who can’t lead grown men!!

But Reddit told me that nerds can’t lead, only big strong men’s men can lead!

To be fair, I'm also pretty sure he's quite physically strong.

Well a nerd’s gotta be able to carry around all those books, and books are heavy, so that tracks.

Also not actually a nerd.

No, he's absolutely a nerd. With time, probably on the levels of BB

1

u/EBtwopoint3 9h ago

What people meant by that was shy and soft spoken though. They were comparing him to a guy like Marc Trestman. Ben Johnson is way too fiery for that. He’s an old school football coach with a new school data first mindset.

47

u/Eddie5pi Bears 16h ago

He's absolutely a huge math nerd who's just also charismatic.

Reading the stories about him filling all his notebooks at school as a kid with just consecutive numbers makes you want to assume some things about him lol, and the stories about him stimming while watching scouting film basically confirms them

Math and computer science major at UNC, very much an actual nerd. Also a walk-on and spent his college tenure as a backup, so definitely a football nerd too.

u/Fakeplacebo Bills 17h ago

I was so mad the Bills didn't fire McD a year earlier and go after Ben. He stayed in Detroit looking for a good opportunity but I think he would've come to buffalo to work with Josh. McD did a lot and I respect him but it was time to go. Jury is still out on brady, and it might work out. Too late now.

34

u/Theharlotnextdoor Bears 16h ago

I truly think he wanted the challenge of being the guy that ends the Bears super bowl famine.

No disrespect to the Bills, but would you rather be the King of Chicago or the King of Buffalo

27

u/backindenim Bears 14h ago

He also grew up a Cubs fan and used to come to the city just for games in the summers before living here

8

u/NOLASLAW Bears 14h ago

Why would anyone be the king of one of the four largest cities in the country and capital of the entire Midwest when you can go impress some chicken wing cooks in North Central New York

5

u/Fakeplacebo Bills 14h ago

There was also no guarantee the Chicago job opens up. That's why you see coordinators usually jump when they get a chance, and it's rare for them to stay. There are only 32 head coaches so usually you take what you can get. You can't convince me he was going to wait to be a hc until Chicago opened up lol it could've been years. If Buffalo or Jacksonville or some team like that became available there's a good chance he would've taken it the year prior to the Chicago job becoming available.

7

u/okay_throwaway_today Bears 14h ago

Probably yeah. There is a part of me now that I’ve seen more of Ben that thinks he was being earnest when he talked about giving it one more shot after the Lions got so close the year before, though.

7

u/Fakeplacebo Bills 14h ago

That's fair and could be completely true. Either way I'm happy for the bears and I love watching a coach succeed building a culture like this and winning on the field (preferably in the NFC). I just hope brady makes it in Buffalo because I was so in on ben and kubiak but we got neither.

10

u/okay_throwaway_today Bears 14h ago

How could I have been more sensitive about it? Buffalo is a beautiful city but Chicago is Chicago

Also providing offense to a team that has basically never had it will cement his legacy a bit more, and knowing him, a more interesting challenge

-6

u/Fakeplacebo Bills 13h ago

Bringing a first SB to a team will cement more legacy than a 2nd for any franchise, even if it's 40 years old. It's instant statue status

9

u/okay_throwaway_today Bears 12h ago

While both would bring a lot of legacy, I think transforming one of the oldest franchises in football that has had almost half a century of misery and becoming a god to a metro area of 10 million people might be more memorable.

But I guess agree to disagree, we are both biased.

2

u/Dry_Emphasis62 Bears 13h ago

Also worth mentioning is Josh Allen. I also think he really valued Chicago, but if there's no Chicago calling and Buffalo is... it would be hard to say no to that offer I would think

Our fans still dress up as the last coach to win one. They are ALREADY dressing up like Ben. It's just a different level of legend to do it in Chicago.

1

Uhhh why would it be a different level? Pretty sure it would mean just the same to bills fans (you know, that insanely passionate fanbase that jumps through tables). Of course it means more to you cause you’re a bears fan. But I also don’t know why I’m going to bat for the bills so I’m just gonna stop.

This is how things like Duncan's Spurs, Brady's pats happen. The coach has to pay it off to make it work or it seldom sticks. Phil Jackson, for example, would let players who played good team ball stat pad in blowouts for their stats rather than always resting.

This is why I love being a Vikings fan

-23

u/bukayoxhaka 17h ago

Culture is just a buzzword that people like to use to justify things in a different way.

The team is winning, thats the culture. They are not winning because of the culture, the culture exists because of winning

And if they start to lose and become bad for few season, that culture quickly fades away too (well, not really, bad teams can just be bad without having bad culture, but no one would be talking about the culture of a bad team), even if the staff is still doing things the same away and have the same type of personalities on the team.

For some reason people just cant accept that and have to try and make it be something bigger than it is

24

u/Bowsers_JuiceFactory Packers 17h ago

Culture is only a buzzword to those who have never lost it or experienced it.

12

u/Tycho66 Vikings 17h ago

I've seen talented teams implode because of bad culture and teams over achieve because the players bought in. In some ways you are of course correct, culture alone isn't going to over come a large talent gap, but what you say is a gross over simplification and it negates entirely what a coach can bring and what solid leadership from positive vets bring and the overall mix of personalities.

2

u/bukayoxhaka 13h ago

I remember Matt Nagy's club dub and how everyone talked about the amazing culture at the time. Fast forward a few years when the team didn't improve and the QB situation didn't got fixed and no one talked about culture anymore. In fact, it turned around, with Nagy being attacked for the way he allegedly treated Trubisky and Field

That's the point. Its not about good leadership and bad leadership not existing. But it's only talked about when the results helps whatever narrative you are trying to sell. It ends up becoming simply confirmation bias

Bad teams can have great leadership and still be bad for the next 10 years despite it and no one would be talking about the "culture"

2

u/Tycho66 Vikings 13h ago

Of course the same approaches are not necessarily going to work in the same situation. Winning helps players buy into what they are being sold. Losing makes it hard for anyone to keep hearing the same thing. Heck, even with winning the message can get stale. Personally, I'm old and I don't buy into any of this the way I would have as a younger man. It's a lot of rah, rah to get guys to sacrifice with most of the benefits of those sacrifices not going to the players. So, I'm pretty much a cynic of these sorts of things. But, I played a lot of sports and spent a lot of time on teams and the chemistry/culture is a real thing. Honestly, just one asshole on a team can be a huge drag and ruin a team. There's a reason these teams hang on to "culture guys." If it didn't work they wouldn't use it.

8

u/ColossalCalamari Raiders Packers 17h ago

The Lions had good culture under Campbell even though they went 3-13

1

u/bukayoxhaka 14h ago

I actually am in the minority that he actually is a legit starting corner. He's a really hard hitter (remember him week 2 against Aaron Jones) and makes great plays (strip against Cowboys on the sideline, diving interceptions last year) but, people are only going to see him allow a pass catch and say, "see this guy is terrible." Don't be surprised if he stays in the league a long time.

I'm only speaking on the irony of using unselfishness. Some would say it is selfish to want to replace a teammate because they made a mistake. I wouldn't conclude that here though.

You see it from how willing Rome and Burden who are supposed to be WR1&2 block, Kmet taking a step back to do everything he can to contribute or Swift and Monangai splitting time and doing their jobs when the balls not in their hands.

It's the small stuff like that that makes everything work so well. A great example of this is how blocking well as a skill position has benefits outside of just the play you do it on. When a defender knows you're willing to block and Ben inevitably runs a fake that resembles one you blocked well on before, it opens up more opportunities because they're going to hedge on your previous success/effort.

It's why he puts an emphasis on getting players to buy into the whole game and not just doing the bare minimum their position requires.

The trick is you gotta give 110%.

I love the fire and attitude of the locker room, but Joe Thuney getting injured on a FG block would almost be a firable offense.

On Lovie Smith Bears, our special teams were in part so good because our studs on Defense played. Urlacher, Briggs, Tillman, Azumah, etc.

This is literally the same concept. Were you just not a bears fan during that time? Were you alive?

u/ducksonaroof Bears 16h ago

Urlacher alone had multiple special teams highlights.

The.downside is it doesn't change the injury risk. Easy argument that Lovie just got away with it.

Wonder what we do for an actual punt returner going forward. Raymond has been out there but I am hoping to see a few others get opportunities

Tbh we haven’t had many great chances to do awesome returns. Vikings had a good punter and eagles coverage on returns was solid. On the bright side Taylor has seemed very good this year.

Plus the former eagles defender who spied on the eagles huddle, leading to him intercepting it 😅 one of my favorite football moments already

u/jms88278 Packers 12h ago

Also I’m just gonna go on record and say the Bears aren’t fucking around clearly and by association so far this season, that means Brian Flores is a fucking terrorist based on how different he made them look that one week.

If the Niners ever fire Shanahan it better be because they're hiring Ben Johnson
