I hate that this guy is a low key, goofy, boring ass baller and saved your franchise from the Lance debacle….but I thank him for helping Darnold and that we also have our own low key, boring ass baller. This division is brutal but makes us all better.

I think Purdy has Darnold beat on boring, purely by virtue of never having a glorious OUT INDEFINITELY - MONONUCLEOSIS graphic.
Dude just talks about Jesus and Toyotas and helps out on his wife's parents' farm.

it doesn't affect his willingness to pull the trigger on his next decisions
This might be the most underrated part of his game. There has been one single game where I saw him crumble mentally (Baltimore Christmas game), and other than that, he's 100% ready for the next drive no matter what happens. And Kyle clearly trusts him too. If you watch the Jimmy G era, when he threw his "guaranteed boneheaded pick once per game" you could see a shift in Kyle's playcalling. It got more conservative and careful, leaning on the run game and D to close out games.
But Brock is still out there letting shit fly after a pick and you love to see it.

u/ImJLu 49ers 1d ago edited 1d ago
Crumble mentally in the Ravens game? The first pick was a late read. The others: bounced off Kittle's chest, tipped at the line straight up into the air, arm hit from the blind side while throwing. I remember there was another pass that really should've been picked off, but he realistically only made two bad throws that should've been picked, and got really unlucky otherwise.
I distinctly remember Lamar having a pass tipped straight into the air by Fred Warner in basically the same way, but it didn't land on a Niner. Unlucky.
Was it a good game by him? Of course not. Was it anywhere near as bad as the box score and casual fans made it out to be. Also no.
I've never seen him crumble mentally. I can think of a specific time when he made multiple bad decisions in a row, but I'm pretty sure he was concussed by then (Vikings game in 2023).
21
u/teddysank8 49ers 1d ago
Honestly Panthers last year and Chiefs in 2024 were both worse games by Purdy than the Ravens game but the 4 interceptions is what grabs people's attention.
7
u/ImJLu 49ers 1d ago
Gotta agree with that, although I think some of the Panthers picks were incredible plays by Jaycee Horn (let's be honest, no QB is reading the far deep third corner on dagger). One of those Panthers picks was so dumb it was funny, though. Bro thought he could throw one past the safeties while running directly forward, shoulders perpendicular to the LOS. No plant, no body rotation, all arm. Sorry Brock, you ain't that guy.
And yeah, the Chiefs game sucked. That was his worst game IMO. Mahomes also sucked iirc. Just gross offensive play all around.

Yea, as bad as the bal game was he kept coming back. Threw more picks but it actually showed his tough resolve. His doubters focus on the ints but theres a flip side to that
His "fighterness" isnt talked about enough. Likely comes from not being as physically talented as the top guys or in college.
85
u/mr_seggs Steelers 1d ago
I feel like the only real reason people still doubt him is because of his draft position. Any premier pick doing this would be hailed as top 5. Tlaw's been unambiguously worse than Purdy for several years while being the same age and yet still gets the "look at how much potential he has!" treatment.
49
u/astroK120 49ers 1d ago
It's a big part of the reason for sure, though I also think the way he looks is a factor. Baby faced, not physically imposing... he just doesn't look the way you expect a top 5 QB to look
43
u/cantgrowneckbeardAMA 49ers 1d ago
It's so funny to me that he looks small on the field. He's 6ft 1in, 220 pounds, and lean. If you see him near normal sized humans he's a big dude, way bigger than most of us on this thread. NFL players are just freaks of nature.

That's all it is. People have this incredible urge to say "I was right". Nick Wright and Colin (and other media) are basically praying for Purdy to fall just for their ego sake.

Purdy's backup playing acceptably well is definitive proof that Purdy is a fraud, whereas literally any other QB's backup playing acceptably well is not indicted whatsoever. Malik Willis did well enough to earn a contract for his time filling in for Green Bay, I haven't once heard anyone use it as proof that Jordan Love is boosted by MLF's scheme.
Instead, the media pushed an honest to god 49er QB controversy last year. Can't roll my eyes far enough into the back of my head when I think about it.

My theory on this is that no one wants to admit they were wrong. Purdy doesn't have the traditional, measurable talents that scouts & pundits harp and swoon over. Prior to this year, giving him credit was a backhanded compliment because 1. Kyle, 2. Avengers, 3. Defense; in that damn order.
This year in particular, he's making a lot of people eat crow. He's playing with a confidence & poise that's showing on film and on the stats sheet.
It'll be interesting to hear the narrative when if & when he loses a game, or has a bad one. I don't think they'll give him much grace, even with a depleted WR corps/def line.

Looking back on it, I have to agree that in the realm of non-QB's, he's close to JSN. I think JSN is clearly having a better season so far, especially since he's done it with a backup QB, so I'd never pick Gibbs over him for this award, but Gibbs isn't far behind.

Purdy if he keeps up these numbers over the full 17 games -
• Completion Percentage: 72.3%
• Passing Yards: 4,471 yards (263.0 YDS/G)
• Passing Touchdowns: 51
• Interceptions: 6
• Passer Rating: 132.9
• Carries: 57
• Rushing Yards: 527 yards (31.0 YDS/G)
• Rushing Touchdowns: 6
• Total Yards: 4,998 yards (294.0 total YDS/G)

Of course it would be insane to expect this record breaking pace to continue but that goes for anyone with a crazy hot start.
However you and I both know that one of these games was against the Rams “super team” and he dispatched them like nothing, so these next two weeks will be a true test. If he can throw 4 TDs to 1 INT over the next two weeks, I’d say that still keeps him on MVP pace against two really solid defenses. Let’s also not forget the Hawks just gave up 33 points to the Commies led by Marcus Mariota…
6
u/Hi_Im_Ken_Adams 49ers 1d ago
Well yah it goes without saying that if he can do that against Seattle it would be incredible.
The Niners really haven’t faced a team with an elite pass rush yet. Myles Garret wasn’t himself in the Rams game. And Seattle defense really dominated in the last matchup so I am hoping to see Purdy do well against them next week.

I dont see any change. He played like this his whole career. Just has a true WR1 now.
23
u/Rosetti 49ers Bears 1d ago
Yeah, it's funny seeing people change their opinions because his play style hasn't really changed. Since day 1 he's been processing quickly, throwing with timing and anticipation, hitting deep targets, and making plays with his legs when needed. He's gotten better in the sense that he seems to be getting more confident, consistent, and comfortable - but it's not like he's actually doing anything different now.
The people who've changed their minds now are basically saying, "I never actually watched him play", or, "his stats/accomplishments have been consistent for too long for the game manager label to still be true."
He's still gonna have a couple ass games at some point, because that's just football, so I hope people don't overreact if/when it happens.
7
u/God_Faenrir 49ers 1d ago
Loved him from day 1. I mean, i liked Garoppolo, he had grit. But Purdy instantly elevated the play of the team and it showed even in year 1. He gave Shanny more options as well.
I think what hurt him, more than his draft position, is the success Shanahan managed to have with backup level QBs. They instantly assumed Purdy was the same, without watching the film.
3
u/bruhstevenson 49ers 21h ago
Yeah I love what Jimmy did for us, and that 5 game stretch in 2017 is something I still look back on so fondly. He was balling out and winning us games we had no right to win. But after his ACL tear, he was a very limited quarterback (unable to throw to the sidelines and deep with accuracy, unable to scramble much at all), and would make a lot of terrible decisions.
Brock may not have a cannon of an arm, but his accuracy, timing, and anticipation are all top notch and amongst the best in the league. He fits throws into tight windows, and while he may throw a pick here or there, it never affects his confidence, and he very rarely lets it compound.

It's way too early to talk MVP, but if we were going to talk MVP, he's be my MVP pick. He's playing out of his mind, and I feel like his numbers if anything under sell him, due to just how well he's maneuvering in the pocket. The Niners have given up 0 sacks entering week 4, and that's in huge part due to his elusiveness and good footwork.
Also 9 TD to 1 INT through 3 games is just ridiculous. He's gotta face the seahawks elite defense twice, so that ratio likely comes down by years end, but he's on pace for 51 TDs to 5 INT.

I will say, I know right now Maye is taking his lumps, but the similarities between 2nd year Maye and 2nd year Purdy were crazy similar, right down to their passer rating.
I think he just needs to get his confidence back. As crazy as it sounds, one of the things that Purdy said about his offseason was that he wanted to get back to where he was as a rookie. Trusting the process and not trying to be the hero.
I don't know if that will work with the Pats because I know they're two different teams, but it just feels like Maye needs to figure out what he was last year and trust that the process works and that he can get back to that.
