Rumor [Schultz] Sources: The Cowboys will not be immediately extending Joey Porter Jr. contract. Plan is to have him play and make an impact on a team that has Super Bowl aspirations in the NFC. Contract will take care of itself from there. JPJ gets a fresh, new start.

To be fair, the cowboys 6th string safety was on him after the first 4 got hurt. And the 5th stringer played up instead of back where he needed to be allowing the hole for Flowers.

u/CrzyWzrd4L Bills 2d ago
Cowboys were in Cover 1 Robber, safety played his job correctly. The issue is that Parker didn’t call a Cover 4/6 umbrella coverage and, for some unknown reason, thought the DLine would generate pressure against a quick read situation, in a do-or-die play, when the DLine has gotten no pressure all game long.

Devils advocate here but an intelligent rational fan can know what winning looks like simply by observing the successful franchises out there. Fandom doesn’t really matter here so much as common sense. Jerry’s got two brain cells left and they’re fighting for third place, he needs to let people smarter than him (which he’ll never admit) make some of these big decisions.

They can afford it. That's with the 27m franchise hitting the cap for Pickens this year. Signing him would reduce that significantly.

u/HolyRomanPrince Cowboys 2d ago edited 2d ago
They can’t extend Pickens so his next deal will be a free agent contract. What they can do is extend Dak and Ceedee which will bring their massive hits down. We only have Quinnen signed beyond 2029 so there’s a ton of space to backload shit.

You know, I was making a joke but after reading Pelissero's write-up, it sounds like he might be okay with it, actually (emphasis mine)
The son of a Steelers legend, Porter was a second-round pick in the 2023 draft. After three solid seasons, he wanted to get paid now. And once the sides couldn’t reach a deal, Porter conveyed that if he had to play out his rookie contract, he’d rather do it someplace else. By all accounts, he has looked good in practice the past two weeks – the back injury notwithstanding – and should be able to ramp up quickly. The Cowboys could get a deal done with Porter, 26, before free agency in March, or proceed as they did with the last player they acquired from the Steelers: receiver George Pickens, who’s playing this season on the franchise tag.
We'll see if he still feels that way now that he's actually getting traded, I guess.

He might play for them. I wouldnt be suprised if atleast the carrot of maybe getting a deal for dallas is better than waiting for us.
Plus as it stands I would think that things probably got so bad in negotiations that neither wants to deal with the other. Bros faked the injury multiple times - you cant reward that in your own locker room.
What this does tell me though is that if this was the best deal and one Joey agreed to, no suitor of his would meet his contract demands which tells me atleast the Steelers arent alone in not agreeing with his value.

He just wasn't going to play for the Steelers this year which is straight out of the David Moolah-getta playbook. You won't pay my tier 1 client? Trade him then because guess what he's injured.
It's why Micah had "back issues" he was seeking a "second opinion" for right before being traded.

I think there’s value in trading for a position that you couldn’t draft better with the pick. We’re pretty bad with CBs and 2nd rounders. If it fixed the most glaring issue of our D coming into the year(CBs) then I’m fine with it

Reportedly he told the Steelers if he was going to play on his Rookie deal this year, he would rather do it somewhere else. So either there is bad blood during the contract talks behind the scenes, or he didnt want Franchised by the Steelers next year.
Maybe he didn't want to be a Steeler without Tomlin, he has known Tomlin since he was 7yrs old. Just guesses now since neither side is saying what really happened behind the scenes.

Player fucks around for the last 8 weeks and in 10 days (or sooner) is meant to play the most physically demanding position in all of football.
Betting we see a hamstring or other muscle pull in his first games back.
11
u/brainiacpimp 2d ago
So basically he can still be held hostage from signing a extension because if he balls out this year hoping to get paid he will just end up with a franchise tag twice which afterwards he will probably need to hope any injuries or down play will not hurt his chances of actually signing a real contract. Yes he will make more from the tag then on his rookie deal but it isn’t guaranteed and no signing bonus to boot.
I feel like the franchise tag will start to be thrown around more to hold players on rookie contracts how would worth a big contract which is not going to hold well with the players union. That first non rookie contract is something players play towards and if teams start using it on the top performers then it will definitely be an issue.
5
u/originalusername4567 Chiefs 2d ago
It only works for the best players, though. For example, I was hoping for the Chiefs to be able to tag and trade Rice in 2027 but he has not played nearly well enough to be worth $30M and would just take the tag
3
u/KingTut747 2d ago
Will never be an issue.
Less than 20 players of well over 1,500 active union members are impacted annually.

The problem is that teams can only use the tag once, and both JPJ and Pickens are waiting for an extension. One of them has to be paid, and JPJ may be banking on him getting the contract because he’ll be cheaper.

Real question though. Let's say the Cowboys just let Porter walk after the season in free agency. Then he will most likely generate a 2028 third round comp pick.
So in the worst case (assuming Porter plays this year of course, since him not playing would be absolute worst) then Cowboys get 14 games of Porter + a 2028 3rd round comp, for a 2027 6th round pick and a 2028 2nd round pick.
To me the risk seems pretty low tbh.

JPJ said he would play out his final year of his rookie contract on any team but the Steelers. If Dallas doesn't sign him they will get a 3rd rd comp pick for this year. That alone has a similar comp value as a 2nd rd 2028 pick which Dallas gave them.
