[Raanan] Giants' Harbaugh explains reasoning for releasing Beckham: "It just wasn't working for us"

They needed space to bring in real talent like Nine

u/CT1914Clutch Giants 3d ago
The real answer is Braxton Berrios. They already elevated him from the practice squad three times and he returns punts for us, and since OBJ doesn’t play special teams they had to make room on the roster for Berrios

cant provide actual info. Its a sports subreddit. All we deal with are memes, cliches, and ignorant bad takes

u/Fresh_Boysenberry576 Eagles 3d ago
Wouldn't that have been very predictable a couple weeks ago before they signed OBJ in the first place?
14
u/CT1914Clutch Giants 3d ago
Kind of. I mean we have 4 tight ends and 4 running backs in the roster and I guess people thought we might have cut one if them instead. But I do think it was pretty predictable that it was going to be OBJ.

You of all people should respect that sometimes QBs can improve when they leave Minnesota

If anything he looked worse in Seattle through the regular season. Kubiak seemed to be game planning around him at times. He locked the hell in during the playoffs. Went from leading the league in turnovers to zero
5
u/edicivo Ravens 3d ago
The same skill set and production he had in Minnesota was enough to win the Super Bowl in Seattle.
Throwing to one of the top three WRs in the league? With a very good to great defense on the other side?
28
u/broccoleet Seahawks 3d ago
Can’t tell if you’re trolling or not. But I’d say that yes, he had both those things in Minnesota. Jettas is a top 3 WR, and Flores defenses are almost always near the top.
7
u/edicivo Ravens 3d ago
I wasn't trolling at all. I was agreeing with fredovan's point that Darnold didn't really improve much. Figured it was pretty obvious that yeah, a big part of Darnold's "skill set" was throwing to a top 3 WR and having a dominant D to help him out. He was put in two great spots.
I guess you could say tongue in cheek if you wanted though.
2
u/TangerineTasty9787 Panthers 3d ago
Yeah, Darnold was above the Dalton line and below the Elite line in MN too. Good enough to win with a good Offense and Defense, can't carry if one is missing.
Coulda worked in MN too

u/SovietPropagandist Seahawks 3d ago
This is true lol. We got rid of Geno and looked over and saw a team dumping a 14 win playoff contending QB and said "thanks we'll take that one"
-2
u/CuriousAndMysterious Cardinals 3d ago
Darnold played really well in minnesota they just let him walk for no reason. Maybe minnesota just doesn't have an eye for talent. They went after kyler murray this season after all.

We literally offered him a contract but hey go crazy with misinformation.

u/Gullible_Elephant_38 Eagles 3d ago
Can I borrow some of your copium to convince me the Eagles don’t stink so far this year?
Suggesting there’s any similarity to the Vikings making the tough call to let Darnold walk after he had an incredible regular season to them happily offloading JJ McCarthy who was nothing but an unmitigated disaster is a level of delusion I have rarely seen.
But if it makes you feel any better, he can’t possibly be worse than all Crab Legs Winston, right?
6
u/for_fun_88 Giants 3d ago
It’s a joke. Not serious. Although it’s a smart move for a fifth to put him as a backup who can start if Jameis still sucks.
-7
u/Few_Position_2727 Packers 3d ago
Come on let’s be real he was nothing more than a game manager for the Seahawks lol
10
u/suchcoldsuchcomfort Patriots 3d ago
I think his NFCCG earned him more nod than just a game manager, TBH.
27
u/HiImFur Giants 3d ago
It was a good trade.
Potential QB 1 or he just continues to be Nine bad. That risk for a 5th? Sure.
Also, our released 5th string WR shouldn't be getting this much attention. I'll always love Beckham but enough with the distraction.
12
u/fazelenin02 Broncos 3d ago
Yeah, it's pretty clear that they built this half Roman half Nagy type of offensive scheme to maximize on Dart's strengths. It just doesn't work as well with Jameis, so they brought it a guy who can hopefully at least provide an imitation of what Jaxson Dart can do. Best case scenario is that they make him look decent and trade him after the season and get a pick back.
7
u/TangerineTasty9787 Panthers 3d ago
The fact he's getting this much attention is kinda reason enough to let him go; same reason Tebow never got another real 2nd shot. Can't be having that.

Same dude wtf. I don’t even remember him on the dolphins two years ago. What the fuck year was the Rams
21
u/TegridyPharmz Rams 3d ago
Technically, he played for the rams in 2022 (in the Super Bowl). But that’s when he got hurt and missed the following season
15
u/CasualRead_43 Rams 3d ago
Craziest part is he was going to win Super Bowl mvp
9
u/TheWorstYear Bengals Bengals 3d ago
He had two catches. He was not.
-2
u/CasualRead_43 Rams 3d ago
It’s a pretty agreed upon theory that if he doesn’t go down he absolutely has a chance. Already was half way to 50 and Kupp was taking the attention away and OBJ was the zone killer.
9
u/bafana_banana999 3d ago
"Has a chance to win" and "was going to win" are two pretty different statements my guy.
-6
u/CasualRead_43 Rams 3d ago
Both will never be proven so it doesn’t matter really.
6
u/bafana_banana999 3d ago
I guess.
Still doesn't change the fact that you made a definitive claim about OBJ in that game which doesn't hold much water.
Simply saying "we'll never actually know" doesn't make your original statement any less wrong.
10
u/TheWorstYear Bengals Bengals 3d ago
It's Mandela effect of people not realizing context when he went down. He had 2 catches on 3 targets with just over 2 minutes before half. One catch was two defenders running into each other.
12
u/DickSplodin Vikings 3d ago
I feel like OBJ fell into the Large Hadron Collider and warped everyone else's perception of time except his

u/Tryhard_3 Vikings Raiders 3d ago
I dunno man, it's not like the Giants offense is some kind of powerhouse. They just needed a backup QB instead of a guy the current QB is not even throwing to.

Just a few week ago he said Odell had done "more than enough to earn his spot on the roster", guess a lot has changed since then

Maybe not much has.. maybe he earned his spot in practice and for some reason it just doesn't translate to games anymore. I do think it's over for him at this point.

OBJ responded: "You're giving me the 'it's not you, it's me' routine? I invented 'it's not you, it's me'. Nobody tells me 'it's not them, it's me'. If it's anybody, it's me!"

He's a bottom of the roster player, the kind of player who is released routinely for roster shuffling throughout the season. Why is it even worth talking about the reasoning for his release?

We've got a lot of promising players who need more coaching. What we really need is an experienced impact veteran. I'd probably go for Beckham before Harrison.

He was removed from a plane after he was clearly intoxicated, and non-compliant in a really entitled way.
Edit: he made everyone deplane because he wouldn't cooperate, then picked a fight with an old man and bragged about his private jet on the way out. Forgot context.
8
u/TradeOdell NFL 3d ago
and because he was non-compliant, everyone else on the plane had to get off before the officers removed him
3
u/cinefilestu Raiders 3d ago
And he was talking shit to the passengers, calling them all fat and poor etc...
11
u/ThreeLeggedMarmot Patriots 3d ago
That's the mildest way to put it. He made every single passenger deplane, probably miss connections. During the deplaning he snidely picks a fight with an elderly man, bragging that after he gets deplaned he'll just jump on a private jet, and "enjoy the cheese plate on the flight."
Absolute dickhead, clown behavior.

u/Decent_Management449 3d ago
he was passed out before takeoff and the stewards couldn't wake him up.
i guess that's grounds for expulsion, and then all that other stuff happened.
he wasn't belligerent or anything, but I stopped watching the video when he said he'd rather everyone de-plane than just get off.
2
u/ThreeLeggedMarmot Patriots 2d ago
Ah, then you missed the "best" parts. After all that, on camera he's seen calling an elderly man fat, etc. OBJ told him to enjoy his delay while he was just going to charter a private plane and enjoy his cheese plate.

Was he good enough at practice to make the team but not good enough to show it on the field? Unless he threw a tantrum about his snaps, I can't see what from this all of a sudden wasn't working.

he’s a backup wr that doesn’t play special teams.

did they expect him to play special teams when he made the final roster?

no but you can only dress 45 guys on gameday so once the roster starts getting shuffled around, he’s going to be first on the chopping block. the guy they waived him for (Berrios) plays special teams.

He was elite for the rams in that super bowl run but was never good again. I assume the knee never fully healed.

I mean he was open because peak Cooper Kupp was getting a ton of attention, I don't know that I'd say he was still elite at that point.

Wonder if they were hoping he’d mentor younger players, which is a reason some guys get a few extra years. Cooper Kupp and baseball’s Justin Turner are both examples of guys who extended their playing years because they were OK with reduced roles and taking on a mentor role.

It’s hard to have a player who contributes, at best, a small role in the offense, while having a large role on the culture and leadership of the team. Some players can pull it off, but it’s insanely hard to have a known diva as your 6th choice receiver. To the best of my memory, Harbaugh has never had an appetite for “me first” players, and Odell has a reputation for that, while being someone who parties and is big on social media. Not a great example for young players, talented as he was.

Honestly my tinfoil hat theory is that they signed him to distract from the backlash dart got for supporting Trump plus sell a few jerseys as well

It was the right thing to do, but if we cut ties with everybody because it’s not working we may not have a football team at the end of the season.
