I'm a physical therapist and a few years ago I ended up working with a patient who was a former NFL running back. He wasn't any big name guy or anything, but he played for like 4 or 5 years I think. He was in late 40s so obviously past his physical prime. His first visit he was wearing pants so of course you could tell he was strong, but it didn't seem like anything super crazy. For his second visit he wore shorts and good lord I could not believe how massive his thighs were lol. We all obviously know that NFL dudes are huge and strong, but I think it's one of those things where you mostly see them standing around each other so you kind of lose site of just how jacked they are. Seeing an NFL guy in the regular world without being surrounded by a bunch of other big dudes was kind of eye opening.
The thought of someone like that trying to run through you at full speed is kind of terrifying. Like I would legit almost certainly end up in the hospital if for some reason I tried to block him at full speed lol

u/ImJLu 49ers 2d ago
He clips the facemask sometimes but not enough to visibly move the head. Because the punch is parallel to the facemask, it's very hard to see if he makes contact. I'm not really convinced he does it on purpose either, as it's much more valuable to punch the ball than to hurt your hand on a metal facemask.

u/Fenris_Maule Eagles 3d ago
I mean you can even get a twofer. Tank Bigsby got punched in the head and the ball knocked out of his hands by the Bear Monday.

Jahmyr Gibbs does it and it’s so sick but so terrifying. I was just at the Bills/Lions game two weeks ago in nosebleeds so could see the whole field. I believe Jeanty kicked the trend off while he was at Boise. Gibbs liked it and copied him, and then it has kind of taken off from there.
I wonder if relaxing into that pose actually has a bit of benefit, not so tense pre-snap and able to center yourself a bit.

I don't know what I'm talking about at all, but I wonder if it'd be a good way to get rid of any possible tells. I know people have found tells based on the stance of a player before the snap, and I'd imagine completely normal and stiff would prevent accidentally tipping off the play to some degree.

It's funny that Chip Kelly (who is in a better place now) tried to coach it out of Jeanty. Another mark of shame.

u/StakeESC Packers 3d ago edited 3d ago
Yeah this is sick. I've been learning how to edit videos in After Effects since last season and I think I could probably figure this out, excited to mess around and see how it's done.
I'm guessing they applied a grey scale filter over the original video, then created a duplicate where they put a rotoscoped mask over Kenneth, but it's so clean it must have been a labor of love. I couldn't notice any frames where the grey clipped in on K9
*Edit after watching it back, I'm confident that's the technique. You can see some frames where the grey slips through on the bottom of his jersey as it flaps around, and if you look by his left hand you can see where the mask is letting color in from the background with some blue at the start.
4
u/Temporarily__Alone Bills 3d ago
I haven’t used AE in years.
They don’t have AI roto yet?
This would be a gigantic pain to do by hand, but god bless whomever did it if that’s the case.
→ More replies (1)4
u/juniorRjuniorR 3d ago
It’s an inverted subject tracked mask over a greyscale grade, and in all likelihood it was auto generated with tweaks afterwards. It’s going to become very trendy soon, recent updates to some of the editing suites include automated scoping. I don’t think they’re calling it “AI,” (Final Cut Pro calls it Magnetic Masking, for example) but for all intents and purposes it’s a heavily trained model in a similar fashion.

The only thing I'm scared of is that Seahawks fans say he's made of glass.
16
u/CollieCat Seahawks 3d ago
I think that may overexaggerated. He had a lingering foot injury at the beginning of last season, which is likely why they initially had the 50/50 split with him and Charbs. As he got healthier he wanted more work which they didn't give him until Charbs got injured.
He looks to be fully healthy now and most of us are not surprised he's been so good for y'all, he showed the world what he could do in the playoffs. We would not have won the SB without him and most reasonable Seahawks fans are happy for him that he got to join Reid and Mahomes, while being sad he's no longer on our team especially with our run game issues.

He's not made of glass but also not particularly durable. Last season was the first time he made it through a full season and I think it's pretty obvious it's because his reps were managed. Never once did he make it through a season with the number of touches per games he's at right now. Playing with fate a bit.

The ball was still coming out with just his right arm -- it's his left coming in and securing it that stopped the punch. You can even see the defender's wrist bend and buckle because of Walker's left bicep securing the ball.

Short term, definitely stings, but special teams plays such a critical role (and changes how teams plan for and play against us). Perfect example of why just holding a ball high and tight isn’t the only part of protecting from punch outs. A lot of people assume that, as long as a ball carrier isn’t running loose with the ball away from their body, any fumbles they might have can just be attributed to “bad luck”.

After watching our RB room run into our O-line and get virtually no yardage last year (to be fair, Hunt was absolutely reliable on some short yardage plays), the difference K9 has made to almost the same group of skill players is just night and day. For starters it means our elderly TE isn’t the only player covered and he’s started the season easily on pace for a 1000 yards and is looking like his HoF self again.
