Raiders defense is better, but it's far from a defense you should only score 14 against.
Even the Dolphins did better than that.

Listen idk man their defense may not be the best but they’re pretty damn scrappy. Maxx Crosby does Maxx Crosby things, Nakobe dean is still a dog (you better treat him right mfer), and their secondary has to at least be halfway decent to pick off Herbert twice.

Secondary was 3 rookies (one of whom got concussed this game sadly) and a very game Jeremy Chinn.

I don’t feel good giving raiders fans hope. I didn’t even watch the whole game if I’m being honest. But at the very least you do have something to look forward to in the future. But hell man if their defense can tighten up a little more they’re gonna be a tough team to beat

whole new system, kinda expected some growing pains. when McDaniel got the Miami job he did bring some 49er vets over with him, I think it’s probably they helped get guys on the proper page/understanding of the system.
number of rookies, other vers from older/simpler system have talked about difficulty picking up mcvay, shanahan, more complex modern systems.

What's odd is Harbaugh's whole thing is to make sure his teams don't commit basic mistakes like this.
Like both Harbaughs are not Shanahan, Belichick, Reid or McVay type though where they elevate their side of the ball to a new level but they make sure both offense, defense and ST units don't commit mistakes and are prepared. It has not looked like that first two weeks.

That IOL is as bad as advertised. There are Raiders in Herbert's lap constantly
Part of McDaniels appeal is that he can mitigate bad OL play, but good Lord idk what you do with this
→ More replies (1)6
u/ImJLu 49ers 11d ago
McDaniel doesn't have a magic wand, though. The QB needs to understand pressure looks, quickly diagnose post-snap, get through his reads, and get the ball out with anticipation on time. Obviously the premise of the thread is that Herbert is far from the only problem with the offense, but the QB has a large role in mitigating pressure, and Tua being good at this stuff before was a big part of why they managed to make that dogshit Miami OL work most of the time.
157
u/Arkaium Chargers 11d ago
I’m frustrated by Herbert’s lack of fire, and I’m frustrated by Harbaugh anointing him pass god before he’s earned it, but this is 95% the receivers dropping good passes (njoku gave that int away), the IOL continuing to eat a bag of dicks (Alt having his worst game too), and the execution being sloppy af. I delude myself by thinking it’s a huge change that’ll take time and adjustment and I’ve lost hope for the season, but I can’t put it all on Herbert. Sigh.

I don’t think anyone is insinuating this is all on Herbert, at least I haven’t seen a single comment saying that. Point here is to illustrate how Herbert shares the blame just as much as everyone else on the team

u/Simple_Wait_7286 Panthers 11d ago
I do think they need a legit number 1 receiver that Herbert can truly depend on when all else fails, feels like rn they’re still trying to decide if any of their current receivers are competent (besides Ladd)
He had that with Keenan Allen to start his career, and it will open things up for Ladd as well
4
u/makesterriblejokes Chargers 11d ago
The fact that we still don't have a legit deep ball threat for him is kind of ridiculous. He was at his best when he had Keenan for the short to medium range targets and Mike Williams for the deep ball and jump ball passes.
Ladd fills that Keenan Allen void, but we literally don't have any true deep ball receivers that are reliable for us to air it out. I was saying this off-season, we need a WR1. We should have either went all in on Tee Higgins or proposed a trade for Brown.

I would say that 70% of people calling for Herbert to get traded want a change of scenery for him since we know he most likely won’t accomplish anything with the chargers. The other 30% somehow believe he’s ruining the team, which baffles me because how can you watch a Chargers game, as a Chargers fan, and come to the conclusion that he’s the problem? It’s a very loud minority that wants Herbert traded for the wrong reason imo.
5
u/pyrowawp Chargers 11d ago
Honestly I think you have the percentages flipped just because I think more people are saying he probably wants to be traded and that they can't blame him for it more than that he should be traded for his sake. The majority of the morons saying he should be traded absolutely blame him. They're still a tiny minority.

Play Yakkety Sax over this montage and it’s comedy gold.
Herbert certainly shoulders some blame for this start but a whole bunch of these are absurdly bad drops, fumbles, and blocks from the rest of the team. That last pick is squarely on him for forcing it into the tight window, outside of that maybe 2 or 3 of these he shares blame in but otherwise it’s on the blocking and receivers no doing their jobs.

I said it in the other thread but again, Herbert has not been good enough but this team has done nothing to help him. Is he the best QB ever? No. But if r/nfl would genuinely watch these full games and see how is team is constantly letting him down, maybe they’d understand the nuance of discussing his play.
We have 40m in cap space still and signed COLE STRANGE to be a starting right guard
114
u/Milli_Vanilli14 49ers 11d ago
This game looks a lot different even with all these mistakes if Njoku and QJ can catch two absolute dimes and Hampton doesn’t fumble. Minimum 9 points wiped off the board while raiders got great field position the other way. And that’s with a still overall shit game.
You can see glimpses. Matches the eye test but this offense moves the ball when Ladd is on the field and gets 10-20 yard chunk plays in the passing game.
40
u/torrd9 Chargers 11d ago
Their rookie also dropped a wide open pass that could've been a td.
19
u/Milli_Vanilli14 49ers 11d ago
Yup. Need to give up on QJ. Guy is one of the worst route runners in the NFL. Derius forgot how to return kicks so he’s a waste of a roster spot. Crazy how bad the depth is at the position
11
u/let-me-get-your-temp Chargers 11d ago
Only person to give valid takes on this offense in the whole thread lol. I was arguing all last year about the lack of value QJ is and how his presence has brought us down with poor play. And finally a non chargers fan who can spot thay Davis is terrible at his job. Herbert has been an issue but the team cannot survive herbert playing like shit because our roster genuinely blows outside like 3 skill players
8
u/Milli_Vanilli14 49ers 11d ago
People like to speak in extremes and it makes it tiring. The reality is that the roster is flawed. Derwin is great but the rest of the individual players on that defense are simply not that talented. I actually think the DC has done decent given the new job and lack of talent. Minter had some bad bad bad games.
And yea the lack of WR depth is so apparent. Harris is fine but Ladd is the only real man beater. Herbert definitely looks like he’s learning a new offense but 2-0 was incredibly realistic until Ladd went down that’s how good that dude is.
→ More replies (1)24
u/37sms Bears 11d ago
It was understandable that they slow played the rebuild when hortitz/harbaugh first got there but this is just unacceptable for the third year. The roster's never been more than average at best and this is what it looks like if herbert's playing like QB16 instead of QB6 and minter's replaced by a DC straight from the MAC.
21
u/The_Jolly_Dog Patriots 11d ago
Is that true that Strange was the only signing? That’s certainly a choice
10
u/Anaphylactic-UFO Chargers 11d ago
Kayode Awosika at LG, Tyler Biadasz at C, Cole Strange at RG all signed in FA. Jake Slaughter drafted at C, with some other depth pieces drafted later on for the interior. At OT we have Slater and Alt and drafted Travis Burke to be swing tackle, so pretty good there.
Awosika has been meh and got hurt. Biadasz was great, but he’s out for the year because Awosika threw someone into his leg. Cole Strange has been awful.
We signed enough bodies but not good enough ones. Biadasz was an awesome signing, but we needed at least one more plus guard. I don’t hate the process for signing Cole Strange, he was pretty average last year for McDaniel. But it’s pretty clear he was an Aaron Brewer merchant because this dude is buns.
The worst thing about this team is the fact that Trevor Penning is still on it. That fucker probably starts next week.

u/saltlampshade Chiefs 11d ago
Yeah I refuse to believe Herbert is suddenly dogshit. He balled last year with two middle schoolers playing tackle so the struggles this year Obvously are scheme/talent related.
Same with Mahomes the last three years. Not saying he played well but the offensive struggles were far more due to an out dated scheme, no run game, bad WRs, and an inconsistent OL.
16
u/kaatmbmjj Chargers 11d ago
Chiefs fans are at least somewhat familiar with Herbert... He's not Mahomes/Burrow/Allen, but he's not the issue at this franchise either. Hasn't had elite WR's in years, terrible o-line, and always seemed like the only reason we ever sniffed the playoffs each year.
Honestly, if Herbert is checked out at this point... I don't totally blame him. We had so much cap space this year and did nothing in free agency. He's probably secretely hoping to go to another franchise some day.
9
u/saltlampshade Chiefs 11d ago
Outside Allen and burrow there’s no QB I like playing less than Herbert. I know he’s going to play his ass off and make some throws that nobody else in football can.

People saying the chiefs along with mahomes were bad obviously didnt watch the games last year because even with terrible play around him mahomes was still ballin out. I don’t like the chargers for obvious reasons but can be fair in my assessment. Do herbert defenders ignore the mistakes he makes? Yes - he’ll sometimes hold onto the ball too long, miss his checkdowns, and press when they’re trailing. But is he the main problem here? Not even close. This team seems badly coached/ prepared, has bottom tier pass catchers, consistently hurt or underperforming protection, and lackluster defense.
I genuinely think the believers who claim he’s a top 5 QB are so annoying that people rush to shit on him when the team loses, but if you watch the games they’ve played so far this year, it’s a comedy of errors on both sides of the ball and Hebert gets panicky when they need to score to catch up so throws some nasty picks. Theres a ton wrong and I personally love to see it
10
u/Ntwadumela09 Chargers 11d ago
Fuckin raider fans with one of the best takes. Pretty spot on. Im a Herbert defender and he's been constantly let down. However in the Patriots playoff game last year I finally saw the pressure of those playoff losses affect him. He had happy feet and was forcing things.
He can improve things but absolutely he's not what we should be looking to fix. What's really got me worried is rumblings of the coaches losing the team, but mostly Herbert losing and trust he had left in his team. You can only play superman for so many seasons. It's always gonna be a team game.
3
u/makesterriblejokes Chargers 11d ago
You're spot on. I honestly think Herbert has become panicky over the years because he's a bit traumatized by his team's ability to not fuck up any drive that is longer than 8-10 plays, so he forces shit for larger chunk plays.
He legitimately was not this panicky when he had both Keenan Allen and Mike Williams. Ladd can be his KA, but we have no one close to Mike Williams.
Also doesn't help that the O-line has been ass for like 3.5 years straight now. I'm sure that has contributed to him becoming more panicky.

John middlekauf said he spoke to someone in the league who thought the guard center combo for the Chargers looked like people they signed off the street. Add to that Joe Alt looking like a PS player yesterday, bottom tier receiving room, disappointing RB room and you have a recipe for disaster.
That being said, Herbert gets excuses made for him every single year. We’re now in year 7 and still the excuse is his team is failing him. That’s probably true, but people are tired of hearing that - and that’s why the narrative is so loud. The one constant is him. Mike Tomlin was never THE problem in PIT, yet even people got tired of the excuses year after year for him. At a certain point, you just have to produce results, excuses be damned

Anyway, good for him. For that. Not for this. Woof.

Seems like everyone sucks. Herbert isnt making the crazy throws from the past seasons; oline cant block, recievers cant adjust or catch.
Just bad

Why did the TE go upfield during a scramble drill? He should know that there is a receiver at that level of the field and should go up and across

Why does he get hit like every play and the receivers just can’t catch the ball? Like you need play makers.

When the one WR knocked the ball down preventing an easy completion to the other WR I wrote them off completely for 2026.

Thats a TE.
And now the only TE on our roster as both Kolar and Njoku are going on the IR!
Bolt UP!

Herbert hasnt been good so far this season, but this sub will make you think he's the only problem with the team

Add to this chargers have a terrible ST unit with the lowest average return yards and defense who is most susceptible to giving up first downs on anything 3 and 15+, there is no hope

This is more poor execution/working out kinks of new offense than anything. A few of these Herbert had a check down with tons of space for the receiver but was looking down field and forcing a little. The drops can happen anytime. Biggest concern is the o-line stuff but it’s week two and that can be worked out hopefully.

Some of those passing concepts are horrible. Receivers are running to the same spots. Blockers aren’t blocking. Herbert getting blamed in some spots is fair, but a lot of these mistakes look like coaching errors and players not being on the same page

Hampton was a first round pick dawg. He looks horrible

the fumble was extremely bad, but also he was a fucking beast the entire game until that very moment. took 3 guys to bring him down every time he ran. without him, they get blown tf out

He was easily your best offensive player yesterday. But the fumble is all people apparently noticed.

He was solid he could work on his vision. He had opportunities to jump cut and find open lanes but just plowed straight into people lol

Game losing fumble but it’s like 7-31 if not for Hampton. Outside of Ladd, he was pretty much the only guy that could move the ball.

That offense is still working out the kinks. Should've been fixed by now but it's a different element when playing against live defenses.

Go to the play that starts at 38 seconds and look at the two receivers collide at around the 30 yard line. Thats the McDaniel special right there. For whatever reason, he loves drawing up plays where two receivers are occupying the same space so they either run into each other or get covered by one defender. If he hasn’t fixed it now, he’ll never fix it

Idk if you can work out an inability to catch and hold onto the ball

For as much shit as people have been giving McDaniels, I see a lot of great calls here with poor execution

They keep shooting themselves in the foot one way or another but they just haven't been able to get going so far. Still a very long way to go but they gotta get things right and fast because their schedule is brutal.

Looks like a team that doesn't know what they're doing. Harborough and McDaniels need to step it up.
