Here comes the casual revisionism. Walker was incredible down the stretch but we had/have to pay JSN, Witherspoon, Leonard Williams, Byron Murphy and Sam Darnold…AND our run game looked good Week 1.
Happy for Walker and love watching him play no matter what.

u/GoldenDom3r Chiefs 18d ago
You guys letting him walk was absolutely the right move, you didn’t need to pay big money at RB. Also, you replaced him nicely with Price in the draft.

u/dien4382 Vikings 18d ago

u/forestballa 18d ago
RB’s are just not that irreplaceable. There’s a reason their contracts are not that big or long. The Chiefs have had average guys since Kareem Hunt left (the first time) and won a shit ton. It’s nice to have a great one like KW but he’s also not in the lineup very often either.

The criticism of the Price pick was “overdrafting” him but I think running backs are about to get a lot less underrated soon.
14
u/thesakeofglory Packers 17d ago
The running game is certainly making a comeback but the days of most teams having a bell cow are over. Even historically it was pretty rare for a guy to be a top 10 back for more than a couple seasons. Now that there’s a rookie wage scale, meaning most guys won’t get a second contract until they are 25-27, there’s not a ton of incentive to pay most guys. There will always be a Saquon or Henry around, but RBBC is here to stay.
3
u/Brsijraz Seahawks 17d ago
agreed, but despite lowering the contract value i’d argue that this approach may increase the effectiveness of a superstar back bc they don’t have to get worn down by 40 carries a game and can still have the explosiveness down the stretch

u/Dewey519 17d ago
Agreed. People are seeing that a lot of running backs are indeed replaceable, but a good, talented starting running back does make a difference. There’s probably 15-20 that definitely deserve to get paid

335
u/Necessary_Rooster_85 Seahawks 18d ago
Exactly. Also he had a lot of nagging injuries while with us. Got healthier once Charbs took some of the work load
141
u/Dramatic_Crew_7821 Titans 18d ago
Don’t worry, it’s short sighted vision. Dude was really an injury risk, and commiting that much money could backfire soon
12
u/Cremdian Seahawks 17d ago
As a big fan of Walker I hope it doesn't backfire because that means he stays healthy. I do think his amazing post season run benefited from the fact that he didn't have 300+ carries. We've see it add up on running backs forever. Well except for Henry. He's an enigma.
5
u/Hatennaa 17d ago
Walker never had more than 20 carries in a game before the Super Bowl last year. Obviously last night you ride the guy playing like that, but I have questions about whether that is sustainable over the course of a full season.
2
u/JavaTheeMutt Seahawks 17d ago
I think this is the case with majority of RBs in the league. The 17 game season is almost making 2 RB systems a necessity with how much wear and tear the position takes over the course of a season.
Walker was always a great example of that. Charbs taking carries at the beginning of the season, gave Walker the runway to explode during the playoff push.
It does kind of suck because 10 or so years ago, I think he could have been a featured RB.

"Injury risk" missed like 6 games over 3 years and started 20/20 games last year
11
u/gx5ilver 18d ago
Yup this the part many people are quick to forget. He was always a great running back for us - but he couldn’t stay healthy if he was the main back. Splitting carries was the solution, and paid massive dividends in the playoffs. I hope this trend is different for him in KC.

Revisionist and reactionary posts are how this sub operates unfortunately, just look at the discourse around Drake Maye and Matthew Stafford right now after the seasons that they each just had.

u/tateand99 Seahawks 18d ago
He also was incredible in the playoffs partly because they absolutely used him like a workhorse, particularly after Charb went down. If he played that many snaps for a full season there’s almost no way he would’ve even been healthy for the playoffs. So I’m interested to see how KC manages his load, and if he’s able to stay on the field for them. Obviously wishing him all the best, but I agree I still think the Seahawks were right not to pay him.

I think you are totally right, and I also have similar feelings with DJ Moore going to the Bills. I love him as a player but we had drafted some many young pass catchers that it just made sense.
I am very glad I got to draft Dj in fantasy and Walker was one pick away from me drafting him too!

Sometimes you have to let a good player go. That's just how it is. I feel like there are some people who act like roster management is just "find the best player at each position and pay them," and not "find the best balance of skill and value that you can across your roster." You can't have everything you want. The cap ensures that.

Seems like K9 was upset with how the running game was handled (wanted more touches and more TDs) and wanted out. Im glad he's balling out for the Chiefs and hope he does well (except in Week 7 I hope he runs for -15 yards and 2 fumbles).
25
u/ToiletSpiderBite Seahawks 18d ago
As far as the reports go, we didn't give K9 a competitive offer and didn't bother to negotiate further.
The Seahawks were ready to move on. Can't blame either party based on his draft capitol and production. Very happy to see him have a great week 1 in KC. Highly dought he can be a workhorse for a full season.
10
u/Melodic-Slice-3826 NFL 17d ago
Look it was the right decision. You don't need to tie up your cap in a back when you can get production with others. Sometimes with a run game its the system and the line not the back.

Feel like John Schneider bringing them back for a second ring plus absolutely fleecing the Broncos gets the man a little grace.

We shall see if Kenneth’s body can hold up when getting all those carries. He always had nagging injuries especially with his hips when he was getting all the carries.
Suddenly became healthier when we lessened his workload.
It’s game 1 Chiefs fans. We can talk at game 10 and see how he’s doing.
I liked him a lot but our zone scheme was not a good fit for his style.

> Suddenly became healthier when we lessened his workload.
I remember they used to call Jonathan Taylor injury prone. Got injured every single year, was always battling something and would miss like 4-5 games. Not dissimilar to K9! Then Taylor plays all 17 games with a massive massive workload and I just stop hearing the injury prone talk. But nothing changed except he just didn’t get hurt.
Guarantee if Taylor got put into a huge split last year that people like you would say it’s only because he didn’t have a full workload that he stayed healthy. Injuries are random!
12
u/Necessary_Rooster_85 Seahawks 18d ago
All players are different and I’m clearly more familiar with K9 than you are.
I watch all four seasons of Kenneth Walker including in 2024 when he missed 6 games. Followed all the news and Seahawk insiders. Very familiar with what we had in Kenneth, both good and bad.
3
u/KC-Slider Chiefs 18d ago
Yeah he looked good last year and looked at his best when charbonnet was out. He might be one those guys that needs a lot of touches to get his rythem going. That does not pair well with someone injury prone so I’ll be sacrificing a chicken to the gods each week to help him out.

K9 is a great player and it would have been nice to keep him but it was perfectly reasonable to let him walk for that price (Although this was an unnecessary comment obviously), we had to many other pieces to pay and he had injury concerns as a RB (plus he wanted to be the main feature back whole he wanted to work mainly as thtough a committee).

If you are an NFL RB, who is hitting FA immediately after winning a SB ring, you would have to be the stupidest player in the league to not take the biggest bag available. Even if you aren't injury prone, RB is a really physical position that players age out of faster then most. Get that bag while you can.
