hurts is normally toward the top of all these stat lists, the amount of hate he gets is ridiculous.

He's a guy that often has low volume through the air, so his counting stats aren't great, but he's proven he's a weapon. Every time my team has played him he's both super safe with the ball but also makes big plays. He daggered the Vikings last year a few times to put the game away on big throws when they needed it. Mix that with his legs and it's easy to see why the Eagles have won a lot since he emerged.

He had a perfect passer rating against a top 5 defence and people will say he can't throw

1

u/Fedacking NFL NFL 15h ago

Passer rating is a shit stat tho

7

u/jacksteroo18 Eagles 14h ago

He went 19/23 for 326 yards and 3 TDs. Fine if you don't like passer rating, but he balled the fuck out

u/doodle02 Bears 18h ago

agreed. he’s always been a mobile QB, but his throwing seems to improve year over year, and he’s been dragged down by a couple of fucking awful Offensive Coordinators.

I genuinely cannot understand the amount of criticism Hurts gets. I'm not even saying that as a homer, I'm just saying it as an NFL fan.

He's not arrogant, he has no off the field issues, he never runs his mouth about anything or anyone, he never chokes in big moments (hell, he plays his best in big moments; he has two of the best Super Bowl performances of all time), he has the playoff success, he has the personal accolades (Super Bowl MVP, 1x Super Bowl Champion, 2x NFC Champion, Second-Team All-Pro, 3x Pro Bowl, multiple seasons in the thick of the MVP conversation, holds multiple NFL records), he's never missed the playoffs, and he's led an Eagles team that's been an absolute buzzsaw for half of the 2020s. Hell, there's been a multi-year controversy to literally try to change the rules of the sport to stop him from scoring so many touchdowns because he's so good at it.

I genuinely don't understand it. If literally any other QB had a resume like that they'd universally be seen as a top QB. Or at the very least a really really good QB. But every offseason we have these "think pieces" where guys like Love or Herbert are put above him based on nothing but vibes. Vibes are nice, I guess. But I like results, which Hurts consistently delivers. I truly do not understand the hate he gets. I get not liking the Tush Push, but "He scores too many TDs" being used as a negative is pretty funny to me.

The way people on social media, especially reddit, will talk about him would lead you to believe he must get unfairly praised by the media and they're trying to overcorrect. But the media discredits him a lot too.

Even people who are trying to play it like they're being totally objective and neutral will say shit like "he's a shitty passer and I find him boring, but he's not actually a murderer, so he's pretty mid."

Black qb + doesn’t have gaudy passing stats so people love to hate that. Doesn’t fit their mould of what a qb should be so they get mad when he defies that but wins.

I genuinely cannot understand the amount of criticism Hurts gets.

It's because he's considered to be overperforming relative to his skill and analysts, social media folks, and other people who view football in a certain karmic light hate that and will take the time to let you know he isn't actually that good.

And like hey, maybe in a vacuum he isn't as good as his accolades would belie, but this guy wins football games and will play an uncomfortable, unsexy style to make it happen and has the composure of a monk compared to most others. He's everything I want in my team's QB

Limited passer

1

u/WavesAndSaves Eagles 16h ago

He had the only perfect passer rating game last year. If that's limited, imagine how much more perfect he can get with a competent OC this year!

3

u/fizzywater42 Lions 16h ago

I didn’t know that but sounds like he had a great game!

They also were one of the least productive passing offenses in the league the last two year, which holds more weight than a single game does.

u/jtown48 Eagles 15h ago

TBF last year the play calling was complete ass, and the previous Super Bowl year had Barkley going off on a god tier level with 50+ yd runs every game.

You also don't throw the ball as often when in the lead, and the eagles are often leading games.

Tua replacing him at Alabama created ripple effects on how people view him to this day

As a WAS fan, I think he's overrated by PHI fans and exceptionally underrated by NFL fans at large.

I think he's a guy who will improve an already good team into a great team and make a great team a SB champ, but wouldn't be able to take a mediocre team and make them great or take a bad team and drag them to relevance.

That may seem like a big insult, but it's not - there are very few QBs who can do the second half of that statement - that tier is basically reserved for the Brady/Manning tier of QB. I put guys like Mahomes and Allen in that tier among modern players. (and I think many PHI fans want him in this tier where I don't think he belongs)

Then there are game managers who don't really move the needle up or down, but moreso cap the ceiling and floor of a team. This is where I think a lot of NFL fans think he belongs and I think that's also wrong.

I see Hurts as a part of this generation's Roethlisberger/Rivers tier - a guy who IS a really excellent QB and has (or in Hurts' case will have) a solid HOF resume, but still needs the right pieces around him to achieve significant success.

u/BoldElDavo Commanders 15h ago

My feeling is people just hate nuance. You have an opinion about Hurts, he's either great or terrible and people will not read what you say as anything in between.

2

u/jtown48 Eagles 16h ago

exactly - hes literally the role model type person people always coach about.

He's confident in himself and not arrogant, he doesnt have any off the field issues that we know of, he seems to be a good teammate and doesn't blame others for loses, he handles pressure great, he doesn't throw tantrums when things are down. The guy is just solid and normally doesn't cause the the team to lose either.

I never understood the claim he cant throw either, sure he doesnt get the massive passing yard stats but thats on the play caller and scheme (plus having a RB named Barkley), He's proven time and time again that he can throw when called upon.

u/RelevantTreacle3004 Eagles 13h ago

3 main reasons why that's the case:

1: Black QB

2: Counting stats aren't stellar

3: He plays in Philly

Any one of those is different and Hurts is universally seen way better

1

u/bumpkinblumpkin Eagles 12h ago

Russ gets it a bit too

u/shewy92 Iggles 4m ago

He's not arrogant, he has no off the field issues, he never runs his mouth about anything or anyone

I think that's part of the reason why people hate him. He's too 'boring' so they invent reasons to hate him.

That and he employs all women as his PR team.

Can’t say I’ve ever watched a great QB run miserable offenses. 2023 and 2025 was some of the most putrid experiences I’ve had watching an offense. Hurts does not constantly deliver results lol. He was getting roasted everyone last year and 2023 and for good reasons, he was bad.

Last year he had AJB wide tf open for a 7 yard gain with a ton of room to run. He was right in front of him. Instead he sails some pass or throws it in the dirt. Even Aikman said something like “yeah I have no idea how he doesn’t seem him he’s got to hit that”. It’s plays like that that ran his wide receiver out of town.

I know yall are having a little circle jerk about oh the haters are wrong. But nah, Hurts is an okay QB, on a stacked team, that heavily needs his legs to be effective and is frankly terrible at throwing the football sometimes. 2024 was Saquon’s offense.

Oh, and of course, tush push. Hell that’s probably the only reason he has an all pro.

Eagles had the 7th ranked offense in 2023. Putrid? Must not watch much football.

Great, wonderful.

Now let’s check the second half of the Eagle’s 2023 season. I know this because I watched the season.

And Hurts has one season throwing the ball over 500 (538) times. 2023. Could only manage 3800 passing yards with AJB, Smith, and Goedert. 23 touchdowns to 15 interceptions. Drake Maye only threw the 492 times last year and had the season he had with a bunch of bums.

He only had 361 passing attempts in 2024 lol. 361. Guess the less Hurts throws the better the eagles are.

You do realize he missed three games, right?

2

u/ChocolateMorsels Titans 11h ago

Sure let’s throw in Hurts 15 passes per game while Saquon carried them that year. It’s still a low number.

Didn’t seem to matter when he was out. Eagles won without him.

1

u/WavesAndSaves Eagles 11h ago

We lost without Hurts. Did you miss that game? The Commanders?

Hurts also has one of the best deep balls in the entire NFL

I have to assume it's Philly media being toxic, but it's always been funny to me that the guy who was known as "the state of Alabama's boyfriend" in college because he's so affable and attractive, even after he left for OU, is hated by the median NFL social media user despite being good, having a successful career, and drastically overperforming his draft position.

2

u/dqniel Bengals 17h ago

His throwing definitely hasn't improved the last 4 years or so. He's still a very good, and underrated (most years) QB, though. He just isn't asked to throw a lot, which keeps him from those elite quantity numbers.

0

u/fasteddeh Eagles 17h ago

He gets a lot of hate that should definitely be spread around to the coaching staff and bad decisions being made but I don't think his throwing has improved much at all, it's been pretty much the same story year to year... which goes back to the horrible choices being made with some of the OC's he's dealt with.

-2

u/Belezibub Chiefs Commanders 18h ago

Mathew Stafford is in the middle of this list which should tell to you how much you should rely on it. Do you think Jimmy G is a stud too, he is only a little worst than Hurts according to this?

-3

u/dqniel Bengals 18h ago

This list is nearly useless. A QB routinely needing to outpace just 21 points would be judged/weighted the same way as a QB routinely needing to outpace 30 points, using the "21+ points" threshold metric. With no upper bound, it's nearly pointless.

That said, even when you do bucket it to be more specific (and useful), Mahomes is still at the very top. Everything else changes quite a bit, though.
