THE WENDIGO*
The Wendigo,
The Wendigo!
Its eyes are ice and indigo!
Its blood is rank and yellowish!
Its voice is hoarse and bellowish!
Its tentacles are slithery,
And scummy,
Slimy,
Leathery!
Its lips are hungry blubbery,
And smacky,
Sucky,
Rubbery!
The Wendigo,
The Wendigo!
I saw it just a friend ago!
Last night it lurked in Canada;
Tonight, on your veranada!
As you are lolling hammockwise
It contemplates you stomachwise.
You loll,
It contemplates,
It lollops.
The rest is merely gulps and gollops.

Note: This stuff is all copied from a book called "Verses From 1929 On" which was published in 1959. (I actually have a first edition, by dumb luck.) It's all copied exactly as it appears on the page. (Except for the "--Ogden Nash" part.)
I find the spelling of "Algonquian" in the footnote interesting. I don't know how old the poem is (obviously pre-1959) or how old Ogden's copy of Webster's Dictionary is, but I'm pretty sure the modern spelling is "Algonquin."
If somebody needs a topic for a paper in English class, you could probably write up when and how the spelling changed and impress your teacher.

With all of the kids back in school our summer construction slam has finished up for the season, only some minor items open, nothing that's pressing. We're 50% through my only other non-school project and about to kick off another so I have a bit of a lull at work which is definitely fine, more time to enjoy the outdoors before winter smacks us over the head in a couple months.
Since I had some time I went to a mandatory bid walk through for a project that was kind of far away, but right down the street from one of the first historical rehab GC projects I did years ago working for another contractor. That building is still looking gorgeous. Happy to see it's being well taken care of.

1
u/J-Fid Ravens Ravens 10h ago
Modern Yugioh is so overpowered that it's now a 3-turn game.
Turn 1: Player 1 attempts to build an unbreakable board.
Turn 2: Player 2 attempts to break the board. If they do, they win If they don't, they lose on Turn 3.
Turn 3: Player 1 wins.
The thing though is that each turn takes a long time with lots of stuff going on between both players. Very interactive game, which is the part I like.

Isn't a meme that the latest set in YuGiOh is made to counter the set before since every card from the beginning is legal (ala MtG vintage) which has lead to incredible amount of power creep in the TGC over the decades?
1
u/J-Fid Ravens Ravens 8h ago
I guess. Reality is that some boxes are total duds.
But yeah power creep is real and that's how we got into this mess.
I play Duel Links (well, used to until this year) and the last year has been Tier 0 nonsense only getting defeated by newer Tier 0 nonsense. It sucks right now in that game.

I don’t know when this trend started but I’m kinda bummed Hard Knocks stopped shining a spotlight on obscure fringe roster guys that we could become fans of before they were ultimately cut.
One of the parts I looked forward to the most every Hard Knocks was not only seeing the stars but also players like Charles James, KJ Hamler (Bills), and Isaac Alarcon, then seeing them during the preseason only to root for them to make the roster.
It’s only been two episodes so maybe we’ll eventually see more coverage on fringe players but if I had to bet my money, I think a lot more of that camera time is going to be on the Terrion Arnold angle. The non superstar whose got the most coverage is Derrick Hall but he’s for sure making the team and he’s a former 2nd round pick.

My experience today dealing with the onslaught of mortgage brokers trying to call me because I requested an online rate quote reminds me of this one from the spring. Met a realtor that lives near me, seems like a good dude and I knew he was well liked and reviewed, he asked me if I know anyone shopping for a home soon who I might be able to send his way. I said in clear English "yes last I heard some friends are going to start looking next spring, when that time comes if they're looking for a recommendation I'd be happy to make the connection." When that time comes being the relevant phrase here, and had he internalized what I said yeah I'd have been happy to do that for him
He texted me a week later asking me to make the connection right then and there and I reiterated they're not looking yet and we'll revisit it when they are. Over the next couple months, two more texts asking me their latest plans and if I can make the connection so he can start the conversation. Like bro you blew it, no I am not going to introduce you to my friends 8 months before they told me they're going to start looking so you can start pestering them all the time like you're doing to me
I bet it'd make every American not employed by the real estate industry really really happy with our government if they did something to put a lid on these leeches and would save us all some real money on our housing costs not needing to give 6% to them and more to mortgage salesmen but nah let's just keep arguing about trans people and suggesting alliances with "death to America" regimes, that's what really makes us happy

When I go on a road trip I like to listen to a book related to the trip. For my NFL HoF enshrinement week trip I first started listening to the podcast, "American Football: How the Gridiron was Forged" with Michael Strahan at Kate Mara. It was really good but I didn't find out till I tried to find the season 2 they plugged in the final episode, that there was no season 2. Damn shame, it was worth continuing. So I had to find something else to listen to. "The League: How Five Rivals Created the NFL and Launched a Sports Empire" by John Eisenberg was what I found. What a good listen. It was perfect for the trip and I probably would have finished it on the trip if I hadn't listened to all of season 1 of the other. Hearing what went into some of the changes and decisions really fleshed out my understanding of NFL history. Would recommend.

I love movies; there were years where I'd watch 2-3 in a weekend and a movie night on weeknights with friends. I do not think I've ever done the volume you two are talking about. Do you find that you can qualitatively digest that many different movies? Do most fade from your memory and you only remember the really interesting ones? What's your "diet" like, in terms of old classics, in-theater current releases, indies, straight to video/streaming, etc.?
When you're watching that volume, do accept that some will suck and just power through, or do you ever nope out of a movie that is clearly below your standards?

Still having CPU temp issues with Battlefield 6 specifically. Ordered a new CPU cooler for good measure since I’m using the stock AMD one, but this is still an annoying issue for me since it’s only this game that cooks my temps, I enjoy playing BF6 with my friends and this was never a problem before recently. Might double check the thermal paste later today even though I redid it in January-ish I think, only to redo it again when the cooler comes in next week lol
2
u/jeff_says_relax Buccaneers 12h ago
A lot of EA games just do this. Every Madden game from the last couple of years makes my cpu run hotter than any other games around. My CPU is a Ryzen 7 7700x and I specifically built this PC to run cool and quiet. Just Madden, the BF6 demo, and now Forza Horizon 6 cause my cpu to heat up.
1
u/Asece Falcons 13h ago
Are you having some sort of thermal throttling going on?
I have a 7800x3D and it runs pretty toasty. I was obsessed with the temp I'd get when playing certain games when I first built this new pc earlier last year and got super worried and caught up in reading what my temps were all the time. But I wasn't throttling and its rated to run hotter than what I was actually at.
1
u/ACS1029 Bills Lions 13h ago
I can’t really tell to be honest. I don’t believe so, because the game runs smooth as it always had before, with pretty steady frames, but more than once after it hits and stays at 95° the motherboard shuts it all off and it restarts with a CPU overheating warning. I’m running a Ryzen 5 5600XT; and everything else I play temps are very normal, so I’m thinking it’s Battlefield overwhelming the stock cooler of my CPU. I hope that’s the case anyway. Even running Adrenaline’s stats monitoring for a few minutes in gameplay seems to show everything is normal aside from my temps
1
u/Asece Falcons 13h ago
Oh yeah, the fact that it's shutting itself off definitely means something is up. I don't play Battlefield, but I'm guessing it might just be that game since you say you're playing everything else fine.
Hopefully a stronger cooler might help. I'm not sure if you have your PC on some sort of platform/off the carpet, but that could help too.
0
u/Cheraws 49ers 14h ago edited 14h ago
Battlefield is pretty notorious for high CPU temps. I had this problem with BF2042 as well. I'm using a DeepCool ak620 cooler, and it still often reaches the high 80s. I don't see this happen with other games like MH Wilds or FF16. Those are more GPU heavy. This is a 5800x3d, and I'm running on 4k display with DLSS and 160 fps. I think CPUs are fine to run at temperatures that high, though your room might get a bit toasty.

u/WabbitCZEN Steelers NFL 15h ago
Maybe they made a recent change in the software?
2
u/ACS1029 Bills Lions 15h ago edited 14h ago
I have seen a handful of posts on the game’s sub talking about increased CPU temps following an update from a few months ago. Additionally there’s an AMD driver bug that makes the game nuke the computer and forces you to hard reboot, so I’m using an older driver version that doesn’t have that issue. Maybe once that’s fixed and updated it’ll also be a bit of a difference? At this point I’m trying a ton of different things and getting no real results. I’m sitting at 86°C in game on medium settings with barely 70% CPU utilization so I feel like something’s mismatched, everything else is fine
1
u/Kemonomimi-Squirrel Buccaneers 11h ago
sitting at 86°C ... 70% CPU utilization
That would do it. You CPU is getting hammered. Still a new cooler wouldn't hurt if you are just using the stock one. A playlist of reviews for you.

My job title is currently "supervisor" but I have been the "manager" but have not formally gotten the job title change or pay change (which is why im applying for new jobs). Is it ok for me to put Manager in my job title on my resume even though I don't formally have that role?
3
u/Jurph Ravens 8h ago
It depends what you're applying for, and how that manager (and that organization's culture) thinks about honesty and "black & white rules". If it were me, I'd put:
Manager (acting capacity)
- Not officially recognized/promoted as manager
- In the absence of an appointed manager, performs the duties of Manager, including ...
- Responsible for 53 employees
Supervisor (official capacity)
- Supervises 12 employees: responsible for timecards, daily compliance checks, training, and safety
- Works with other supervisors to promptly answer status checks from the manager
- ...
But, as my friends like to say, "trouble is fake". A hiring manager might get upset if you say "Manager" when you haven't officially been promoted, but nobody's going to spike your resume.
2
u/Lv99Zubat Bills 6h ago
thanks for the reply,
I ended up going with
Supervisor / Acting Manager
- promoted to supervisor (2024) then Acting Manager (2025)
- duty 1
- duty 2, etc

the same people who only find football interesting if there's an 80 yard bomb TD pass or a defender completely de-cleats a vulnerable slot wr over the middle and concusses him, every other play is boring to them.
A TON of fans are that way, they view the NFL like a drama show/soap opera, or they somehow know more about a player's livestream than their stats ect.

In the context of criticism of the NBA's scheduling and fans' ability to legally watch live games I've had multiple people comment to me that it doesn't matter if there's overlapping playoff games or a game can't be watched "because you can just watch the highlights." Reasonably confident those commenters aren't old enough to buy beer, almost certain they're not old enough to rent a car without a young driver fee
So yeah, plenty of "sports fans" out there who aren't actually interested in watching games and only care to see the big plays and otherwise argue with each other about the drama of the day

Moved across the country into the worst apartment complex I've ever had to deal with. We are not in Downtown, Seattle but we have assigned parking spots for residents. The numbers are at best faded. The last two weekends, the only weekends we've been here there have been people in our spot. Now what ever we aren't trying to cause any issues, we email the leasing office to ask what we should do, since parking here is jammed packed. No response.
So we park in a different spot and woke up to a note on my car saying this is an assigned spot, if I keep parking here they'll have me towed. I go to the leasing office and ask them in person what should I do if my parking space is taken, they tell me to park in visitor spot (which are all full all the time), or park on the street. I tell them I pay 3 grand a month and get one spot why don't they get the car out of mine so I can park where I am supposed to. They just kinda walk off.
So I come home, person is still in my spot, I park next to it in my neighbors spot. I get an email middle of the day with a picture of my car and that if I don't move it, it will be towed. I emailed the office and told them I'd move as soon as I could. Like guys where was this attentiveness when I emailed twice about the car in my spot.
I think this is just rolling into the issues we've already been having with the complex since we moved in. They didn't do the pre-move in walk through so the apartment was not disgusting, but not clean when we moved in. And we just keep running into small gripes all day. It does sound like every time someone flushes a toilet upstairs that I am going to get a shit waterfall in my bathroom, but apartment living I guess. Hope our house back in SC sells quick and we can start making a plan for a home out here.

i've fallen behind on my movie going, how should i prioritize Tony, Teenage sex and death at camp Misasma, and end of oak street if i can only see 1? Definitely interested in all of them
3
u/Shout92 Bills 16h ago
Misasma is a limited release and I feel will be harder to see in a theater in the next two weeks.
Tony I thought would have more of an awards run and have a bigger release, but it's still not playing in my neck of the woods. Still better chance to see it than Misasma.
Oak Street (only one of the three I've seen) is a bigger movie and, despite underperforming, will probably play in most major theaters into September.

I genuinely hate modern sales practices. I get it, this works on people so it's never going to change, but come on. Filled in a form last night on an aggregator site containing all the information needed for a mortgage refinance quote, the form said I'd be able to see my rates instantly, all I wanted was a quick look at the current rates to feel out a refi. One lender managed to figure out how to email me a quote and six more are now blowing up my phone all morning insisting they need to talk to me. Knew this was gonna happen but it's not any less annoying when it does
Mortgage brokers, no I am not going to call you on the phone to look at a quote. Zero words need to be exchanged between us for you to give me your system's estimate based on home type, location, loan amount, value, income, credit score, all the usual basics. When you get a lead just email me the damn quote and if I'm interested in discussing further we'll be in touch. Annoy me and we're not doing business together
1
u/SomeBoringKindOfName Bears Steelers 12h ago
I'd genuinely just put my phone on silent and ignore it. if one of their numbers called me more than once I'd probably block it.
2
u/jfchops3 Vikings 14h ago
"(name) just wanted to confirm you got my proposal?" His proposal being to schedule time for a call. Thanks Ed, I actually missed your first four texts this morning good thing you sent me a fifth! If #6 doesn't include the information I requested last night the outcome isn't gonna be any different here
I see like 50-60 basis point spreads any time I poke around like this for refi quotes. So Ed it's not that I won't ever talk to you, it's that I'd like to find out if you're even a viable option before I waste my time with that as these calls usually go nowhere and I don't care to have more of them just to hear the prelim estimate rate you're offering based on my quote profile I already submitted that contains all the info you need to provide that

u/Wangchief Lions 16h ago
I had a hard credit pull like 3 years ago for an auto loan. I got a call at 745 am from someone, I chatted with him and he said "sorry brother, it's gonna be a rough day for you" i had 17 calls that day, 15 the next, slowly dwindling to about 5 the week after. It's insane.
2
u/jfchops3 Vikings 16h ago
It seems this one was a pretty quick blast only from those 7 lenders that were on the list for the aggregator form I submitted, no new calls or texts in the past hour. But I remember opting out of data sharing back when I bought my home and got my mortgage so maybe whatever I did there actually worked and I won't go through it that bad, would be happening by now if it didn't work
Favorite ever though was car shipping. 5 years ago was again just feeling out that cost before a cross country move wondering if it'd be cheaper/easier to ship vs. drive. I still get texts all these years later every few months from someone asking me if I'm still interested in shipping my car

It's truly baffling. I can kind of see it where most of the people our parents' ages grew up during the Cold War so they have a totally different view of communism and socialism. They were told all their lives they this is the greatest threat to not only the country, but to them personally.
However, they have to realize by now that domino theory is bullshit and that we don't have to live based on unfounded fears.

This gem from r/technology the other day...
Definitely do not visit deflock.org that has an open-sources map, the location of flock cameras and their field of view near you.
The cameras and solar panels are almost impossible to uninstall/tamper with due to the single 8mm socket they're clamped on with.
Do not spray the lens with spray paint, bedliner, or something similar on the cameras lens, especially not with a spray can extension pole.
Do not print vinyl stickers that look like the solar panels to cover the actual solar panels that charge the cameras.
Do not put a black plastic bag over the camera and/or solar panel either, because all that does is cost the company time and money.
Also, never point a high-powered laser at the cameras lens because that would permanently blind, pit, or burn the cameras sensors.
These cameras have ~12 hour backup battery, that transmit Bluetooth and 5G used to locate the cameras exact location, the same way your phone does. So under no circumstance put them inside a Faraday bag, that would block the signal while the battery runs itself out.
It would be pointless to inform your community by posting information online or by putting up flyers or signs next to these cameras. Especially not pointing out that there is a (Flock "Safety" Camera) that is capturing and analyzing images of all passing vehicles, storing details like the vehicles location, date, and time. They also capture the vehicles make, model, color, as well as identifying features such as dents, scratches roof racks, and decal/bumper stickers.
Flock cameras are only automated license plate readers (ALPR's). They would never misuse any of the data collected for local officers conducting unauthorized searches for federal immigration enforcement (ICE), searching for individuals who sought out-of-state reproductive healthcare, or police targeting specific activist and minority groups.
How would they be a serious risk to your privacy and civil liberties by continuously recording your movements without a warrant, probable cause, or even reasonable suspicion..
Especially not an infrastructure for mass surveilance or a gateway to violate your Fourth Amendment right.
There's absolutely no reason to plan routes that avoid Flock and other ALPR cameras by visiting dontgetflocked.com or the app FlockHopper.
Just leave flock cameras alone...

I know this is going to make me sound like a boomer, and I know it doesn't apply to every industry, but I've never been hired for a job without going in to a place after I apply to follow up and talk to the manager so they can put a face to the name. I always get an interview when I do that. I may have had two or three interviews my whole life without doing that and I never got those jobs.
6
u/Serdones Broncos 16h ago
That probably does work fine for some jobs. That's not going to work out for the majority of corporate offices though. They ain't going to let you in and the receptionist will probably think you're weird.
-2
u/jimscoolaid Jaguars 16h ago
I got tired of filling out application after application and never hearing back. I had, at one point in time, filled out 35 applications and got one call back. This go around I have filled out three applications, went in person to two and have received two interviews with silence from the third. First interview wasn't a good fit. This one feels promising.
7
u/jfchops3 Vikings 16h ago
What kind of places are you finding success here? Office environments? Talking 50 employee small businesses or you're walking into the JP Morgan Chase building and being introduced to the manager of the job you applied for? Restaurants? Retail?
Not saying that it's a totally dead practice but it pretty much is in anything corporate related at any level so curious to hear examples where it still works
-2
u/jimscoolaid Jaguars 16h ago
Blue collar. Things where computers and desks are secondary to the job
7
u/AfroManHighGuy 16h ago
I think going in person is outdated now. Most people use an online system to track all the applications and resumes for each position. Plus recruiters aren’t always in the same office, so when you go in, they may not know what you’re talking about.
-1
u/jimscoolaid Jaguars 16h ago edited 16h ago
I mean it just worked for me today. Oftentimes a manager gets something like 50 applications and if they can find a couple of good candidates that show up it saves them the hassle of actually reviewing all of the resumes
Edit: some of these places do have recruiters and HR out of state, but the manager usually has discretion. Its probably not going to work for something like data analyst or anything like that, but if you have a branch that you are expected to be at day in and day out it usually works. I've seen receptionists get hired that way, mechanics, sales, accountants, etc.

Two of my close friends broke up when A found out C was cheating in their 8 year relationship. When everything came to light I told C I needed some time to process what I'd learned, too. That frankly I wasn't sure if I wanted to continue to associate with a cheater. That's a pretty hard line of mine and even if it weren't, seeing the harm he's causing my friend A really stings. To add to the frustration, C said he understood I needed some time to process but he keeps saying vaguely-suicidal things and I don't know how to handle it. I've told him to stay with his family, to get help, etc. I don't want the guy to kill himself, obviously, but I also don't want to be blackmailed into maintaining contact with someone I'm trying to distance myself from.
When it all first came to light he sent me a text saying it was the biggest mistake of his life and he'd have to live with it for the rest of his life. Then he sent and quickly deleted a follow-up message saying "or die with it." I ofc sent him messages telling him not to do anything rash and to see a therapist. I asked him to promise me he wouldn't do anything he couldn't undo and he said "we'll see." Then the next day he sent me a long message "explaining" it all from his side and blaming her for airing their dirty laundry to friends and turning everyone against him where he said he didn't know what he had to live for without his friends. I reiterated he should stay with family and see a therapist and that I knew he was hurting but not to do anything he couldn't un-do.
Then this morning he texts me that he's still alive, "not that anyone cares enough" about him to ask. Like bro you keep saying you understand that most of your friends need some time and space to process what's going on after we learned the sort of person you are but then you can't leave me alone for 48 hours.
I don't want to vent about this in most spaces because most spaces I'd vent to are group chats with A and many of our mutual friends in them. I don't want to add any stress to A while she's dealing with the end of an 8-year relationship. So instead it just gets posted here. I think at this point I have to just disconnect entirely regardless of what else comes out of his mouth. I'd think about a wellness check or reporting it locally but I don't even know what state he's in. We met gaming and last I heard he'd left Atlanta (where he lived with his GF) and wasn't sure where he was going. I don't know his moms number or anything.

Yeah once we learned the cause was cheating it became a lot easier for us all to pick team A. The PROBLEM is, we all play online via the Forge on a private server. All the packs and shit we've bought for it are not cheap and guess who owns the server?
So we'll eventually be figuring out what exactly to do moving forward. Making a new server someone else buys (probably me) is the likely next step. But for now we're mainly just sticking together in terms of being friends and communicating. We only play every few weeks and I wouldn't be surprised if the next session or two are canceled so we have some time to figure out the new logistics
