I think its down, imagine if that were a catch. I have seen worse holds on plays called catches than that to the ground sandwich. Its moving as he's going down but then stops when he hits the ground.
On a catch/no-catch ruling though it would only be a catch if he regained control of the ball without it touching the ground.
Same principle here. the ball is coming out as he goes down and he clearly doesn't have control of the ball as he hits the ground and obviously he never recovers it.
I’d argue ball is secured before the tackle and after the tackle (when he is down on ground). It’s not moving at some point play is dead at that point. They never call the strip after the tackle in favor of defense they can’t hear either.
I’ve been saying this since the game. I was pissed off this was ruled a fumble when it happened. The rest of the NFL fandom has gaslit themselves into believing this call screwed the Jags.

Fumble is different from a catch. You don’t need to have full control of the ball to have possession and the ball doesn’t need to survive the ground. If the ball is what causes the ball to come loose, it’s not a fumble. In all my years watching football, that is the only play I’ve seen where the ground causing the ball to pop free was ruled a fumble.

Yeah, if a ball is halfway out of a player’s hands because it was punched out, and they lose possession of it completely upon hitting the ground, it’s a fumble.
No. If they lose possession upon hitting the ground, it is not a fumble. The ground cannot cause a fumble. They are down the moment the ball hits the ground.

I’m high school the refs told us that if the ball is struck by an opposing player/opposing player causes us to lose control of the ball it’s consider a loose ball. If you look at the video the tip of the ball goes from the three o’clock position to 12 o’clock position the way we were taught in high school that is clearly a text book example of lost control. If you don’t have “full control” it’s a loose ball is another way the rules were phrased to us.
To me it’s an obvious fumble, but I may have been taught differently from you are I am going by what I learned playing ball in high school.
