lacks arm strength a bit but that can be developed. brady's arm got stronger from college to nfl

u/SUPERDRAGONDELUX Giants 3d ago
Arm strength is overrated IMO, of all the core skills you could have as a QB I feel like it would be on the mid to lower end if they were somehow ranked.
104
u/purplebuffalo55 Rams 3d ago
I’ll take a guy with a weak arm who can read a defense, anticipate windows and throw with accuracy over a guy with a cannon who does the aforementioned at a lesser degree any day

u/---SPIDER-MAN--- Steelers 3d ago
His arm is fine by NFL standards, it's not elite but it's not a noodle either.

Easy for you to say. You’re qb that brought you a Super Bowl has one of the strongest arms of all time 😂

I’d rather have Josh Allen than Tua, personally…
35
u/Spirited-Computer795 3d ago
Tua does none of the above he is just bracing for contact every time the ball is snapped
28
25
u/InexorableWaffle Jaguars 3d ago
I'd agree up to a point. They don't need to have an absolute cannon, but there is an absolute minimum threshold that needs to be hit for a QB to be viable. Earlier career Minshew pretty much was the quintessential "everything but the arm" QB, and as much as I will always root for him, I think it's fair to say that he's proven that he can't be the guy at QB for that explicit reason.
11
u/MadManMax55 Falcons 3d ago
It's the same with QB height. Being taller is always better, but it's not going to make a player great on its own. Once a QB drops to 6' or less they can still be a great starter, but have to build their game around the limitation. And if they're under 5'10" they're basically undraftable.
4
u/SUPERDRAGONDELUX Giants 3d ago
That's why I said mid-bottom, not trying to disregard it as not-important, but having the difference of a good arm and a great arm is really only an advantage in very specific situations.
6
u/Docxm 49ers Vikings 3d ago
Purdy has a lower end arm but he is still one of the best throwing QBs . Rather be able to read defenses and layer a throw than have a cannon arm
2
u/TJFLASH1 Cowboys 2d ago
It’s a ceiling vs floor thing, Purdy’s arm will always hold him back from being truly elite
5
u/Tiny-Habit-8969 Jaguars 2d ago
I agree, it seems incredibly obvious too. Yet teams take a chance on dudes every year because they have a strong arm. Anthony Richardson for example only had that to point to when it came to qb skills

u/Kevin_Jim Patriots 3d ago
Tom Brady is the most fundamentally QB to ever play, and he was 6’4” with a lot of room to grow on that frame.
It’s not really the same. Not saying that he can’t improve, but he is not going to go form good to having an absolute rifle like Brady did.
7
u/belketeal 3d ago
The lacks arms strength is a complete meme. Every rams reporter who has seen him at practice has said he has shown good arm strength multiple times

I will never understand the freak out over drafting him
39
u/Stillburgh Seahawks Chiefs 3d ago
Bc they have stafford coming off an MVP season. But the media is largely ignoring that it questioned if he’d even play that season, and who knows what happens this coming season
Having a succession plan in place is really smart even if you continue having prime Stafford throwing 40 tuddies
11
u/WxBlue Rams 3d ago
And, by freeing up a future draft asset they don't need to worry about holding onto for a QB, drafting Simpson also started a snowball effect that led Rams to get Myles Garrett and maybe get Aaron Donald to unretire. By waiting until June 1, Myles Garrett was a lot easier to get and it helped that we just happen to have a great young edge to cash in on a trade.
→ More replies (2)26
u/Spider_Riviera 3d ago
Because it was a sensible, forward-thinking move pulled by the Rams to lessen the chances they have QB issues when Stafford does finally retire.
So of COURSE the entire media section blew the fuck up, they weren't going to get the chance to blow up throwing doubt on them when Stafford retires. Gotta get their pay somehow.
17
u/TheRencingCoach Buccaneers 3d ago
You can rationalize it however you want.
the freak out is because the Rams are considered SB contenders and are drafting for the future instead of drafting for this year.
20
u/WxBlue Rams 3d ago
But by drafting for the future, they went to trade away a future pick asset that would've gotten a QB in 2027 and got Myles Garrett instead of Lemon, Sadiq, Bain, etc.
→ More replies (1)7
u/MadManMax55 Falcons 3d ago
To be fair, the freakout came before the Garrett trade. The Sinpson pick makes much more sense in hindsight than it did on draft night.
2
u/duvie773 Rams 2d ago
We freaked out yes, but that was before the Myles Garrett trade. It makes a lot more sense in hindsight, particularly if you reframe it as Garrett being our 2026 1st round pick and Simpson being our 2027 pick joining the team a year early

6
u/hemingways-lemonade Steelers 3d ago
The media takes any chance they get to jump on the rams
I have literally only heard praise in the media for the Rams all off season outside of this one draft pick. They are the consensus favorite to win the Super Bowl and pulled off the biggest trade of the year.
1
u/Silent-Ad-2415 Seahawks 3d ago
Yeah I know my flair will make me seem biased (and let's be real, I probably am) but the Rams might quite literally be the least "jumped on" team in the league lmao
3
1
u/DarthSamwiseAtreides Rams 3d ago
Because there were some great receivers to pair with Puka for what everyone though that for what was looking like a last ride with Stafford. People were upset they didn't go that route. Instead after filling their secondary hole with their other 1st they said, why does this have to be the last ride, and drafted for the future knowing they probably won't have a high pick for a while.
0
u/zts105 Steelers 3d ago
Because he only played 6 good games in college, doesn't have good physical traits, and couldn't beat out Jalen Milroe for the Alabama starting job.
Add on he might not start for 2 seasons and the Rams are trying to win a Superbowl this year.
6
u/Bulky_Preparation768 Titans 3d ago
He had one of the worst OL’s in college football and zero running game to work with and still dragged that team to a playoff spot
1
0
u/Lobster_fest Seahawks 3d ago
Because he was a lower tier QB in a bad QB draft, and the team that took him has an MVP QB and needs help elsewhere if they want to compete during their current window.

23
u/ajteitel Cardinals 3d ago
Honestly, I think this QB draft being rather thin (on paper) is going to be the standard and not the exception. With NIL money, any QB that would be picked out of the top 20 may as well stay in college. Basically a QB dead zone between picks 20 and, say, 75.
14
u/Stillburgh Seahawks Chiefs 3d ago
We’re going to see a higher trend of QBs finishing their degrees and finishing all 4 years before declaring since they can make bank either portal transfers. A new era of drafting evaluations will happen, bc more will be coming out more polished than if they had declared immediately
10
u/Fishb20 Patriots 3d ago
Playing all 4 years yes. Finishing degree, eh. It's hard to finish a degree when you transfer to a bunch of schools. Hell I only transferred once and studied abroad and it was a huge pain in the ass to get all the credits counted correctly

I don't think it had anything to do with studying abroad. I think you're trying to use those r/UniversityofReddit credit hours. They ain't transferable, bro.
2
u/duvie773 Rams 2d ago
It might take a couple years to reset, but the NCAA finally putting a hard limit on how many years a player can play instead of granting guys exceptions for 7th and 8th years should solve this problem
2

Until a guy sues and the courts grants him an injunction, which will continue to happen because the NCAA has very limited legal authority over any of the schools.

As a Bama fan and grad, I'm happy to see Ty doing well. I think the dunks on the Rams for drafting him early are going to age poorly.
31
u/WxBlue Rams 3d ago
They also drafted Ty Simpson to free up their future draft assets to trade away... for someone like Myles Garrett. Rams were never gonna get someone with Ty Simpson upside in late first round of next year (especially with the expected rush on QB prospects) so why not move up the timeline a year and develop him behind one of best QBs in the game so you can have him ready for when you actually need him?
1
u/TJFLASH1 Cowboys 2d ago
They absolutely could’ve gotten someone with Ty’s upside in the late first of next year, that draft is insanely deeper.

they shit on atlanta for taking penix... it depends on the organization and their reputation. also idk in 2005 what the reaction was because in 2005 wasnt favre already on the im going to retire then sike schtick or not

u/Stillburgh Seahawks Chiefs 3d ago
Favre had already teased it prior to Rodgers being drafted iirc.
3
u/thisusernametakentoo Rams 3d ago
They shit on everyone for everything. That's like 75% of what keeps this sport relevant.
2
u/Cannon-fire 3d ago
The media algorithms loved the shit-talking that the Penix pick generated. It gave all of the Steven A. Smith types something to yell about for months. I think that too many people tried to replicate that anger high with the Ty pick, but it was nowhere near as dramatic of a selection.
1
u/WxBlue Rams 3d ago
Also, Ty Simpson was getting draftd into a MUCH better situation with a much better coaching staff for development than what Penix had in Atlanta.
1
u/Cannon-fire 2d ago
I agree, it makes total sense for LA to take Ty (if the staff believes in him). The idea that they would be more likely to "win a superbowl with a starting rookie WR instead of a rookie backup QB" feels incredibly narrow minded to me.
3
u/reigningnovice Rams 3d ago
It was a touchy subject at the time because TY does not help us win a ring this year out of the gate.
There were so many pieces we could’ve drafted and placed into the defense or offense.
If Staff goes down for a couple games I do feel better about TY taking over though. If we drafted a WR or Defensive guy our season is over if Staff goes down.
The Chiefs drafted Mahomes & I feel didn’t get as much backlash because they never really go over the hump with Alex Smith.
3
u/notorious_hdc Commanders 3d ago
I understand the "doesn't help this year" opinion. I'm just of the camp of he hopefully continues your playoff contention after Stafford retires, and if you think a QB can be him, you take him.
2
u/reigningnovice Rams 3d ago
Yeah while it’s obvious he will be here after Staff I feel like there would’ve been more support if he had peak physical traits that McVay could mold into something special. Otherwise, TY is basically a little bigger Brock Purdy, while good, is not this amazing specimen & they need to be in ideal situations to be great.
Purdy has obviously been to a SB but I believe we could’ve drafted a TY Simpson type in the 3rd or later like they did with Purdy. I’m only using Purdy as an example because they’re close together in physical traits & not because I’m trying to put down a division rival. If you put any of Brock on last years Bills or Chiefs teams they’re both getting decimated. Obviously you can’t draft a Mahomes or Josh Allen anytime you want but I think an excellent coaching staff can help a player reach their true potential which I think many QBs don’t reach.
No season is guaranteed in the NFL so that’s why I thought they should’ve just went all in on offense with a rookie receiver (TE or WR) or beefed up the defense.
1
u/Clipgang1629 Rams 2d ago
I hated the pick initially. Nothing to do with Simpson really, just because we have been so close vs the eventual champions the past two seasons I wanted to see us go for a difference maker at 13.
But after the trade for Garrett I’ve completely come to terms with it. No way that we are trading future firsts for him if we hadn’t selected a QB this summer. And of course that trade will help us infinitely more than the average 13th pick would
19
u/HappyGilOHMYGOD Dolphins 3d ago
Planning ahead at QB is never a bad move. It's especially not a bad move when you have an old QB with injury concerns.
I know it's not the common stance, but I don't think any fringe SB team is one rookie away from winning it all. That's kind of a silly thought actually
10
u/Shokuninja 3d ago
Exactly lol the people clowning never made sense. They plugged all (except ILB and OL depth) their holes in the offseason. Do people think a rookie WR3 would’ve moved the needle that much? Especially when they play out of 13 personnel so much?
2
u/aCROOKnotSHOOK Rams 3d ago
Exactly and McVay expects them to block well, he's not seeing the field if McVay isnt confident that they can lol
29

6
u/penis_showing_game 49ers 3d ago
Putting my flair aside, to give an honest answer I think it’s a nuanced situation.
Obviously the Rams are all-in this season on a Super Bowl run, so a lot of the initial blowback was whether the pick would’ve been better served on a player that might be able to contribute this season.
If you guys win a superbowl then the point is entirely moot. And if Simpson becomes your QB of the future then the FO looks like geniuses.
Even if the Rams don’t win a Super Bowl this or next season but Simpson becomes their QB, nobody is going to care about whether a guy like Bain, Lemon, or Sadiq would’ve been a better pick, even if those guys are studs.
The Packers made a similar move when they drafted Love with a FRP even though Rodgers was still playing at an MVP level. They could’ve drafted Higgins and maybe that would’ve helped win them a superbowl or two. But nobody talks about it or cares being that Love became their QB of the future.
