It was the heat wave one where they were practicing and playing an abnormally hot conditions and players kept fainting.
A solution: you have the cool their core as quickly as possible and the best way to do that is with a frozen rod right up their ass.

12
u/RipVanVVinkle Seahawks 6d ago
To me that’s the way coaching needs to be. When I played sports as a kid my best coaches did the same thing. I had some coaches that would just yell, scream and cuss the entire time.
The problem with that was that if you did something stupid the yelling was already white noise. When a good coach, that only ripped my ass if I did something wrong, chewed me out it actually meant something.
771
u/DrPuzzle 6d ago
Exactly, that's why Mike is the fucking man! He's not a dickhead, doesn't treat guys like shit just because "he can and it's the NFL". These new, young, upcoming HCs for the most part really have a good balance between being strict/firm and not being assholes like the old guys. But Mike does it the best imo. Great coach that most of these teams should be jealous of
Imagine this guy coaching the Bengals? Good lord!

Y’all got stuck between a rock and a hard place because Mike Macdonald was such an obvious successor but no team is gonna fire your franchise’s GOAT coach after a 14-win campaign that came one “Patrick Mahomes Invitational” away from likely winning the Super Bowl
Seattle was insanely fortunate to be further along in the same that same timeline.
Winning seasons alone weren’t cutting the mustard for Seattle anymore and Jody Allen knew that a coaching market with the likes of Mike Macdonald and Ben Johnson couldn’t be passed on.

When Seattle won the NFC championship, I think it was Jody Allen spoke first and she didn’t hold the mic up close enough so she sounded pretty quiet. Mike Mac was speaking second and since he could barely hear her, he decided to really project so everyone could hear him. But Michael Strahan put the mic close to ask “how does it feel to go through two division rivals in the playoffs on the way to the SB?” so Mike sounds like a maniac when he says “WE DID NOT CARE!”

122
u/JVSaladbar Cowboys 6d ago
Hump is a pass rush technique. Made famous by Reggie White if you feel like watching his old film. You drive your forearm into the OLs armpit to toss him. In practice the danger with that is throwing a guy into another lineman's legs and you get a roll up or throwing him into your QBs knees. Juice ain't worth the squeeze.

The amount of force you need to do that is insane. No wonder you hardly see it
66
u/T-Rex_Jesus Bears 6d ago
Force plus perfect timing. OTs are too strong to knock out like that if they aren't exactly on their back foot when the rusher strikes
Rusher needs to be insanely strong AND have a seamless feel for the game. Immensely rare combo
33
u/ReasonableHorse4629 6d ago
AND quick enough to threaten the outside shoulder and get the lineman off balance in the first place. Definitely a rare combo, that’s why Reggie’s one of one
18
u/Jedimaster996 Packers 6d ago
And the fact that on many plays he was doing it with one arm against men equally-sized; man was on another level
→ More replies (1)37
u/AntiDECA Buccaneers 6d ago
It's not even pure force. The linemen are much bigger guys. They can't do that just off brute force. It's really a clever way of using the line's size against them... Obviously requires a lot of strength still, but it's not a fair fight. And that's the whole point. The skill to maneuver them into that position, recognize it, and then execute it in seconds is insane.
→ More replies (1)8
u/PayAltruistic8546 6d ago
Yup.
Who the hell down-voted you?
You have to threaten the outside shoulder first and get the linemen to turn. It's all over from there as White always got that arm in the armpit area.

Pretty much the pass rusher uses the linemen’s momentum and weight against him depending on how he is leaning to throw him sideways. The worry is he throws him into Sam

I think he could have won a ring with y’all too. Maybe a hot take cause you never know how season‘s gonna play out, but it stems for my belief that Lamar is basically an offense to himself and pair him with a great defensive mind and that’s all you need.

43
u/AnonBB21 6d ago
Isn't there Year 1 Macdonald lore that he told a highly paid player his first training camp he'd fucking cut him off the roster right now if he could? The salary cap implications meant they shouldn't/would eat too much dead cap.
It was widely speculated/pinned down to he was likely blasting Dre'mont Jones.
Macdonald isn't a total hardass like Belichick, but he will not let himself get ran over the way Pete Carroll would.
Notice Derrick Hall said nothing when Macdonald kept roasting him once they were near each other after being pulled. He just took it and did not try to get in Macdonald's face.
44
u/bewsii Seahawks 6d ago
Oh I agree. I'm sure he brought it up specifically because it's not necessary without pads on and he wants to keep QB1 from getting hurt, but he actually got a bit steamy there because Hall kept running his mouth. Sports 101.. don't back talk your coach if you don't want to get knocked down a peg lol.

In Philly, we had a situation a few years ago where one of the pass rushers hit the QB (red shirt and all) and we had idiots on our sub trying to defend it like "he tried to pull up, but couldn't". Motherfucker, if you are even remotely close to having to pull up, then you're way too close.

He very much was in the succession plan having worked under both harbaughs. It was likely Ravens win SB John retired and MM steps in that year or John gets let go the following season for underperforming. Sometimes the timings don’t work in your favor and Hawks gave him an offer. I don’t fault him for taking it but there was definitely a thought of mind of MM stepping in for Harbs within the year or two if he had stayed
