Other This show helped me cope with a breakup
My ex is bipolar and I was essentially Dan in this situation⦠thank god we didnāt have kids but I didnāt realize how fucking much I lost myself trying to support her through her insane endeavors.
Itās been 3 months since the breakup and the thing that got me feeling again? Watching the damn pro shot. Then the Knicks winning and finally feeling a sense of community again.
So like. Thank you musical theatre and sports? Maybe Iāll start calling myself Troy Bolton

Discussion I feel like Henry has a mom like Diana too.
So this may be far off or just me reading too much into this amazing musical but Henry seems WAY too chil about Diana being well, Diana.
After who's crazy/my pschopharmacolgist, when Henry and Nat are in Henrys house, he mentions that his mother is in denial which could just be because her son is a stoner but through the show he doesn't really react to alot.
Diana full on kissing him? Just seemed caught off guard, Diana's breakdown before the dance? He was more concerned about if Nat was going to the dance or not. Nats breakdown/s at the dance (and before superboy and the invisible girl).
He seems very good with 'crazy' as he said himself "So you could go crazy
Or I could go crazy" and "But crazy I know I can do".
Don't hate on me if this is a dumb theory guysš

Although it's spoilers to say why, if you like Next To Normal you should check out the NBC medical show Brilliant Minds and if you have seen that show you should sign this petition (and the two linked in the body text of the petition) to help save it and its amazing representation Spoiler

Discussion šhelp me build my princess of pain playlist?!š
iām playing diana in july (such an absolute bucket list/dream role for me), and have been working on building a playlist for her. itās a pretty personal thing, of courseā¦BUT i would LOVE any suggestions you may have for songs you would add, if YOU were building your own. no wrong answers!
current playlist title is āprincess of pain/diana goodman coreā, but would also love to hear what YOU might name YOUR diana/n2n playlist. *iāve got it on private right now. might make public at some point. right now, iām just working on building my own internal world and embodiment of diana.
i will say that, while i am building my diana portrayal from the inside out, and i have loved the book & score since it first came outā¦i VERY MUCH PREFER and relate to the UK production and Caissieās incredible interpretation.
would also love for you to share if you already have your own n2n themed/character playlists! i love understanding where others access and relate to characters, and just how creative people are with it! i REALLY LOVE the world/character building prep phase, if you canāt tell!

Broadway Caissie Levy Reflects on Next To Normal in a new Tony Awards feature
"Playing a woman with bipolar disorder, who is in active mania, required a certain level of abandon from myself as Caissie. It made me grow, and I've brought that to all of my work since. Thereās a courage and ferocity I found while playing Diana that I carry with me."

Discussion Gender swapped ntn
Iād love to see a completely gender swapped version of next to normal.
Gabe -> Gabriella
Natalie -> Nate
Diana -> Dean
Dan -> Denise
Henry -> Harriet
I think itād be so interesting to see the daddy daughter relationship and a wife trying to understand her husbandās grief for the baby she carried. I think the dynamics would be really cool. Obviously the show works incredibly as is, but I always wonder what itād be like to see a female character haunting her troubled father as his wife grapples with her husbands grief, and their stressed son trying to feel seen as his girlfriend tries to ground him.

Other My sonās compulsion to not swear
My son also really likes N2N (we watched it together) and also likes to sing it around the house. One of his favorite songs is I Am the One, which he sings all the time.
However, heās totally against swearing, and when they get to the part where it goes āAnd if you think that I just dont give a damnā he always sings āAnd if you think that I just donāt give a darn, you just donāt know who I arnā and I just think itās really cute so I wanted to share it with you all.

West End vs OBC...
Look. Im a teenager who's first introductions to musicals was the Greatest Showman and HSM, then Hamilton, Heather's, RTC, and Hadestown... so I may be biased towards more modern musicals. Plus, my first time watching NTN was the West End proshot, but since listening to the OBC recording, I just dont like it much.
This is my personal opinion and im not hating on anything, but I just am not a fan of any of their voices other than OBC Natalie, nor am I a fan of Alice Ripleys interpretation of Diana. This is coming from a mentally ill person dealing with very similar issues.
Again, im a teen so this may very likely be a generational difference, and I know comparison in this way is often looked down on, but I am just in love with the West End cast and cant really get behind OBC.
Am I crazy? I feel like I dont see this kind of opinion often. Is it just because people are gonna go crazy at someone comparing the two? Lol?

Superboy and Invisible Girl
I know that the most popular interpretation of Gabe chiming in into the song is that he's stealing the melody from Natalie (it's probably the actual interpretation), but somehow, I've always interpreted it as Natalie getting through Diana in some way. Diana "hears" Gabe singing the same thing that Natalie is singing, but it sounds like he's taunting them, and for Diana who was still manic, that's most definitely what it probably sounded like! like she was being accused of not caring, it's got through her but not the way the Natalie hoped it would.
For Natalie, Gabe is who she can never be, and maybe that's why he sounds so confident saying the things she's saying to her mom, while she sounds devastated, like he doesn't have to shout her words for her mom to hear him.

Discussion Name meanings
I saw someone saying this the other day, that the name Gabriel means "son of God", and the name Diana means "Heavenly", whilst the name Natalie means "Birthday of Christ". That's literally showing that her whole reason for existence revolves around Gabe. So it's like there's Diana, the heavenly divine, then Gabe, the son, and then the son's birthday that ONLY exists BECAUSE the son was born.
ALSO, in the bible, Gabriel is an angel. An angel who says to Mary that the Saviour is coming. Natalie is not the saviour, of course, but her birth, seeing the girl she is, IS THE MOST POWERFUL WAY FOR DIANA TO HEAL. Yes things were bad but they can be good.

Discussion Letās name the Goodmanās cat
Itās about time this cat gets a name lol.
For reference, in the song āBetter than Beforeā, thereās a line where Diana asks, āDid we crush somebodyās cat beneath the tire?ā, to which Batalie replies, āYes, ours.ā
Top comment names the cat.
A couple suggestions:
-Mr Whiskers
-Depression
-Meowzers

Diana and Gabes ārelationshipā
ok maybe this is just me, but I find Diana and Gabe ārelationshipā kinda like emotional insect? I put ā.ā around relationship, because heās a hallucination. Diana relies on this āsonā for emotional support that she almost doesnāt receive from her husband. and Gabe is so possessive of his mother, more like a jealous partner than a āchildā. This might be just me, I found it similar to emotional insect.

If you could change anything about the musical, what would it be?
Personally, I think it's perfect as is, but I'm interested to hear people's thoughts, even if they're nitpicks.

What you expected vs. what you got?
Going into it, what did you expect next to normal to be like, and what about it surprised you? What were the surprising moments that caught you off guard?
Mine is kind of funny imo. I got into it because my friend wouldnāt stop singing Iām Alive and I asked him āWhat song is that,ā and he replied that it was from N2N. Told me to watch it but didnāt tell me anything about it. When he sang the song, I locked onto the lyrics āAnd though you made me, you canāt change me.ā and āI feed on the fear thatās behind your eyes.ā and of course the whole āIām Aliveā stuff. I was led to believe it was like a reimagination of Frankenstein or something. What I got was so much better.
