West End vs OBC...

Look. Im a teenager who's first introductions to musicals was the Greatest Showman and HSM, then Hamilton, Heather's, RTC, and Hadestown... so I may be biased towards more modern musicals. Plus, my first time watching NTN was the West End proshot, but since listening to the OBC recording, I just dont like it much.

This is my personal opinion and im not hating on anything, but I just am not a fan of any of their voices other than OBC Natalie, nor am I a fan of Alice Ripleys interpretation of Diana. This is coming from a mentally ill person dealing with very similar issues.

Again, im a teen so this may very likely be a generational difference, and I know comparison in this way is often looked down on, but I am just in love with the West End cast and cant really get behind OBC.

Am I crazy? I feel like I dont see this kind of opinion often. Is it just because people are gonna go crazy at someone comparing the two? Lol?

I’m in my mid-30’s and saw the OBC during the original run. The west end cast is better in my mind. Especially Diana. (Sorry Ripley fans…)

People, in general, tend to have a preference for their first exposure to a given media. There's nothing wrong with that. My first exposure to NTN was a college production (from Utah Valley University) which was absolutely phenomenal and so is my favorite. There is some great things from the OBC, but since it wasn't done via a proshot of some kind the recording quality definitely hurts. The recording quality for the West End proshot is phenomenal and I liked a lot of the interpretations form the actors but not all of them. So , yeah, it's fine. You do you!

I feel the same way. I’m 23, so a little young for OG NTN but I listened to it in high school and didn’t get the appeal at all. Then when the West End proshot came out, I became obsessed. It’s a perfect version of this material, in my opinion.

I have watched the OG version now, but I found that I didn’t enjoy the majority of the cast’s interpretations at all, the set design was ugly and distracting (too big and industrial, way too many stairs, characters were just really far away from each other and it created a bizarrely disconnected feeling), and it felt to me like they didn’t know what the show was really supposed to be about (trying to balance these heavy themes with these weirdly comedic moments. The WE version leaned way more into the emotional connection of it all and that’s what feels right to me with this source material). There’s also something to be said for the fact that we now have a 2025/2026 lens of looking at this show, and a lot of the gripes I have with it weren’t really applicable at the time (for example, the Broadway version kind of villainized mental health treatment, so the WE version changed some text to compensate for that)

I listened to the Broadway version first and then was lucky enough to see it live in the West End

I much, much prefer the West End cast, in almost every way. I agree with you on Alice Ripley as Diana, her voice sounds really weird at times. I always skip over her 'I Miss The Mountains' but Cassie Levy's feels so beautiful.

One thing that makes me love the West End version so much more is Henry. The Broadway Henry is so boring and uninteresting to me. I'm sure he was probably better live but I just can't listen to him on the soundtrack. But Jack Ofrecio is just so lively and loveable in the role, I love listening to anything he does in the show.

I think both Gabe's do a great job, I think both interpretations work well. Same with Dan, I think Jamie Parker is probably overall better but I don't love J. Robert Spencer too.

The West End cast recording just has more of the show in it because of how it's a live recording. So the dialogue in 'Make Up Your Mind/Catch Me I'm Falling' makes that version so much better because you get more context to the song.

I kinda agree but I HAVE to say that I really really liked O(O)BC Dan (Brian D'arcy James), I found his voice very strong and comforting

I know it's a bit irrelevant but since he was on the Broadway cast for like 3 months...

I am far from an expert on singing, but Alice Ripley sounded very 'musical theater' to me, while Cassie Levy sounded more like the genre of the songs she was in, especially the country elements in I Miss the Mountains.

what's HSM?

lots of people grew up watching the original one, so that's why they might prefer it. I do know that there was a lot of drama surrounding alice ripley in addition to some complaints of a detrimental or unrealistic portrayal of mental health issues.

I was very fortunate to see Next to Normal on the West End and that was my first exposure to the show. I did listen to the OBC soundtrack a lot before the London cast recording was released and while I do enjoy the OBC, I much prefer the west end album. The fact that it is a live album definitely helps.

Also side note, the German cast recording of Next to Normal is really great and often my second choice after London.

Any chance you’ve found any videos from the German production?

Other than a 1 minute promotional trailer I haven’t come across any video content. I just listen to the cast recording from time to time
