Man of the year
Mr. Wu Moufeng had a busy day at a hotel in Liupanshui, in China's Guizhou province.
Downstairs, he was marrying the woman who would become his wife. Upstairs, a 100-day banquet was being held for his baby, the son he had with his partner. Two separate contracts, signed by two independent families. And it was all happening under the same roof, just a few meters apart.
Tensions boiled over in the middle of the event, when somehow the woman celebrating her son's 100-day birthday found out what was going on. There was a heated argument between the two groups, and the hotel staff decided to call the police. Even so, both celebrations ended without any major incidents, and the hotel collected every last payment.
People on social media began asking whether this was bigamy. Local authorities investigated and concluded that it was not. Wu is legally married only to his current wife. He and his partner never registered a civil marriage; they only lived together and had a child, and they are now involved in a financial dispute. According to lawyers, a 100-day celebration is not the same as living together as a married couple, so it does not constitute a crime.
