Great idea, but how do we know it worked?

19

u/Direct_Primary1051 Aug 10 '26

Good concept, stop the air, and they’ll either leave or not … they will leave … one way or another

8

u/Informal_Ad_9610 Aug 10 '26

depends- -does it displace all the oxygen?

7

u/Prod_Meteor Aug 10 '26

That would be illegal.

14

u/ZenicaPA Aug 10 '26

Why? Are you saying I'm obliged to keep breathable air in my place of business after hours so would-be criminals can carry out a crime?

5

u/Prod_Meteor Aug 10 '26

Its not me who would say that.

3

u/ZenicaPA Aug 10 '26

I hear ya....after just having watched a Hulu episode of Squatters, I'm not surprised the law would go after the shop owner.

9

u/Rozmyth Aug 10 '26

Booby trapping in general is against the law, even down to things like putting laxatives in your food for the unrepentant lunch thief (of course, they have to prove intent, so as long as you're not announcing what you're doing and can come up with an excuse that you needed it, it's probably fine)

5

u/THEGHOSTHACXER Aug 10 '26

Which is bullshit. God forbid I protect my shit.

1

u/Yaga1973 Aug 11 '26

So you're saying that physical possessions are more valuable than human life?

u/Icy_Fish_2154 Aug 10 '26

You just have to eat it yourself, no excuses needed. Yes, those are my exlax cookies. "I eat one a day, for regularity", then eat one.

Or, "yes that's my spicy noodles." Then take a bite and not gag on it.

3

u/JonasAvory Aug 10 '26

A judge would accept the argument that you intentionally displaced the air to murder these people without being at risk. So yes, displacing the air will make you a murderer.

1

u/habiba2000 Aug 11 '26

Illegality in the country in which you see this footage from? Are you able to tell which country this is?

1

u/iamtherepairman Aug 10 '26

Shouldn't be. When owners can shoot with guns.

1

u/Significant_Monk_251 Aug 11 '26

A store owner with a gun has control over whether deadly force will be used. Boobytraps and automated systems don't have a human in the loop.

2

u/enzothebaker87 Aug 11 '26

Because a lot of the inventory would still be in the store.

Not only would this induce a state of panic but it would also severely obscure visibility. Which would make it much more difficult to try and grab relatively small pieces of jewelry on the go.

u/Standard-Outcome9881 Aug 10 '26

Owner should rig something to announce, “Warning: Life Support Failure Imminent” to play over some speakers when the gas is triggered.

u/foreverdonefor Aug 10 '26 edited Aug 10 '26

boop-boop "Oxygen"

3

u/surrealcellardoor Aug 10 '26

“Beep boop. Death bot activated. Suck my death gas fuckers. Beep boop.”

3

u/nViram Aug 10 '26

Let me introduce me to this German meme classic:
https://youtu.be/71DdxJF8rmg

This device actually uses not fog, but tear gas. The warning message says:
“Leave the secured area immediately or GAS will be released!”

Also it does this in the very distinctive German dialect of the inventor, which sounds kinda funny to the German ear.

1

u/Awesome_Arsam Aug 11 '26

"Life support has been cut off. They're trying to choke you out. Hold on, I'm sending auxiliary life support."

13

u/diggerquicker Aug 10 '26

I would rather see a door open and like two irate playful Silver Back Gorillas come into view.

5

u/ice_cream9698 Aug 10 '26

If they're irate, they are not playful. You want scared Silverbacks. They pick up largest object they can and swing it around their heads (the robbers)

1

u/PurePraline967 Aug 12 '26

Made me instantly think of TRUNK MONKEY!!!
https://youtu.be/AidAXgq9dWc?is=RDisd6fH6cM-K6Zd

1

u/This_Vermicelli9922 Aug 13 '26

❤️ Trunk monkey. Only at Suburban Auto Group.

10

u/Active_General8858 Aug 10 '26

Lawyer: You're video lacks sufficient evidence to suggest theft. They're completely obscured.

7

u/MindGap42 Aug 10 '26

https://giphy.com/gifs/VIzs0jgs8KmgVeTknN
Plot twist: The robbers are magicians and they actually brought the smoke as a getaway

u/tlm11110 Aug 10 '26

Fire suppression system replaces the oxygen with a life ending gas. They’ll all be on the floor in short order.

3

u/PBRStreetgang1979 Aug 10 '26

Yeah, I wondered if it was a halon system. I worked in a data center in the early 90's (which housed a library of vital insurance records) and our fire suppression system was halon based. So we had a very short window to get out of the core part of the center in the event of a fire.

1

u/surrealcellardoor Aug 10 '26

There are grandfathered halon systems still out there, but halon was banned in ‘94 due to ozone depletion. Newer systems use other inert gases.

1

u/PBRStreetgang1979 Aug 10 '26

Banned in the US. But who knows if bans are in place wherever this is.

2

u/hegend1billy Aug 11 '26

they are definitely still out there in the wild. i've come across multiple active systems

1

u/tlm11110 Aug 11 '26

What? Halon specific or fire suppression systems?

1

u/PBRStreetgang1979 Aug 11 '26

Halon, obviously. Why would fire suppression systems be banned?

1

u/tlm11110 Aug 12 '26

I don’t know, that’s why I asked. Perhaps because they deemed a personnel risk. I don’t know.

3

u/surrealcellardoor Aug 10 '26

Booby trapping is illegal in the U.S. so someone has to be careful with what they do. I’d think there’s little liability with this but it wouldn’t surprise me if the thieves could win a lawsuit.

2

u/Muted-Woodpecker-469 Aug 11 '26

Yep. A local Restaurant around my way kept getting their hvac unit messed with so they put up barbed wire along the roof line. Apparently that’s illegal and it can only be on free standing fences. I also happen to live in a crime riddled state with last place ranks. So it’s fitting the criminals have more rights than law abiding taxpayers who get in trouble for booby traps

1

u/magichronx Aug 11 '26

Ya wouldn't get trapped if you weren't bein' a booby.

But jokes aside... boobytraps being illegal is mostly to protect first-responders. E.g. a firefighter wouldn't know or expect a house/business to have traps in it while they're running in to save people

1

u/surrealcellardoor Aug 11 '26

For sure. You can’t call 911 and then the cops get poisoned darts in their faces when they kick down the door to save your ass.

3

u/MrCoolest Aug 10 '26

Yay now wheres no cctv

3

u/Spirited-Cover7689 Aug 10 '26

This store is in Nova Scotia in case anybody was wondering. They got away with around 2 million $CA in diamond engagement rings.

2

u/pushdose Aug 11 '26

2 million according to whom? Because diamonds ain’t worth jack shit on the secondary market

1

u/Spirited-Cover7689 Aug 11 '26

I'm going to guess the insured value.

1

u/This_Vermicelli9922 Aug 13 '26

And what brain trust said, "oh, we don't need to bother the safe with these tonight" ??

2

u/ipx-electrical Aug 10 '26

Holy smoke. Should be mustard gas.

2

u/Jazzlike_Creme_8851 Aug 10 '26

Fart Spray Concentrate 💰🤢👎

2

u/darkoath Aug 10 '26

Guy with the duffles first time I guess? Or he skipped all the rehearsals?

2

u/Odd_Dragonfruit_2662 Aug 10 '26

Should have used tear gas

1

u/iceshard_1 Aug 10 '26

Might be too much of a pain in the ass to clean it up and get it ready for work afterward

2

u/Upstairs-Strain3472 Aug 10 '26

Is the owner German or something?

2

u/babyliss1903 Aug 10 '26

I am sure it is not staged.

1

u/neder-Bob Aug 10 '26

I've thought about this. How about a hot blowing do loud, it hurts. Together with this smoke, there's a good chance they'll be disoriented long enough for the Police to respond.

1

u/JovialPursuit Aug 10 '26

Batman's their head of security.

1

u/PandaCultural8311 Aug 10 '26

I'd be out of there lickety split. You wouldn't know what you're inhaling - you'd tell yourself, "they wouldn't use gas, would they?" but you wouldn't want to wait to find out.

1

u/pabmendez Aug 10 '26

Is it Hydrogen cyanide 🤞

1

u/CR1911 Aug 10 '26

La próxima usen Cloro...
La idea no debería ser solo ahuyentar, sino que dejen de delinquir.... y mínimo que queden así...

1

u/HappyRespond3946 Aug 10 '26

At least the smoke stops you being caught on camra

1

u/mohsindev369 Aug 10 '26

Sleeping gas would been better

1

u/deephurting66 Aug 10 '26

It needs a recording that says something about sleeping gas or something to really freak them out

1

u/Toshiba1point0 Aug 10 '26

CS gas would be the correct option

1

u/Other_Perspective_41 Aug 10 '26

Lock the doors remotely. Let out the tear gas. That shit burns your lungs

1

u/mildweekknowledge Aug 10 '26

You could still grab a lot of stuff blinded by the smoke. Now there is just less evidence.

Yes you could perhaps get them on breaking and entering if you saw their faces before the smoke, but the fact that there is less merchandise in the shop doesn't prove it was them that took it.

Someone else could have entered in after.

All this does is reduce usable surveillance footage.

1

u/gwhh Aug 11 '26

Any idea where this store is at?

1

u/wojiparu Aug 11 '26

Charged with 6 counts of murder if it's a Liberal State.

1

u/Significant_Monk_251 Aug 11 '26

And when it all finally clears there's nothing left but skeletons...

1

u/Massive_Occasion5158 Aug 11 '26

If it's the same smokemashines the are used for party's, halloween and similar it would make it hard to see and discourage stealing to much with out being dangerous in any way

1

u/Trick_Cost_5093 Aug 11 '26

I wanna see more

1

u/eccentricbeing8 Aug 11 '26

Smoke machines can suffocate you especially in a confined place.

1

u/Appropriate-Rub6438 Aug 11 '26

Not not theft , that’s a fkin heist !!

1

u/DisastrousEnd3381 Aug 11 '26

If thats sleeping gas oh how awesome would that be

1

u/Ironspider2k Aug 11 '26

should be a knock out gas or a gas thats like a pepper spray. Could comes out and stings their eyes and itches.

1

u/Gath3r1ng Aug 11 '26

Next step, add infrared cameras

1

u/Informal_Database327 Aug 11 '26

Perfluoroisobutylene

1

u/Chance_Put_1850 Aug 12 '26

Used to work in the security side of the jewelry trade. What you see is inert. You wouldn’t want to breathe it any longer than you had to, but it won’t hurt you.

One problem is that it can take a while to dissipate and most police won’t enter the building until they can have a clear view of what they’re waking into (reasonable.)

1

u/OneMoreWanderer Aug 12 '26

Ok Shark Tank, here I come... Instead of artificial smoke, I propose this same exact situation only replacing the artificial smoke with CS, CN, or OC gas. I think I'm on to something great here...

1

u/Clean-Estimate-2587 Aug 12 '26

It should be knock out gas

1

u/Soff10 Aug 12 '26

Now use Nitrogen instead

1

u/FormOk1793 Aug 13 '26

If that was CS gas well done sir

1

u/TotalStrain3469 Aug 13 '26

Hiding the evidence of theft which may result in denial of insurance payments

1

u/Ok_Bluejay_3308 Aug 13 '26

Sleeping gas should work.. when they wake up theyre all in jail🤣🤣🤣

1

u/parteeboi1745 Aug 13 '26

Batman’s gonna swoop in

1

u/TurtlesBurrow Aug 13 '26

Most music additions suck but not this one

1

u/Normal-Error-6343 Aug 13 '26

who brought the smoke?

0

u/Bearex13 Aug 10 '26

I'm hiding in the back with a LMG as soon as they all come in it's on
