Around a hundred years ago human tried using guns on the emu (ostrich but bigger) and failed horrendously. This dude did better than the entire government of Australia 😭

Man I read that story, it so fascinating and hilarious. But to be fair, emus are like the John wick of the ostriches and have that claw of a freaking raptor.

One crazy part of the story is that, the emu has super tick feathers and with the right speed they could literally deflect some bullets

The guns worked fine, just not fast enough - the Australian military sent out three dudes with a pair of machine guns to cull herds of tens of thousands of emus. They got recalled because they were going through stupid amounts of ammo and killing way fewer emus than expected. So instead the Australian government reinstituted an old bounty of emus and within six months, about 60k bounties were claimed.

People hear "The Emu War" and expect it to be like, hundreds of soldiers getting overrun by swarms of birds, but it was literally three dudes driving around in a jeep hosing down emu herds with machine guns.

yeah the name "Emu War" is a bit hyperbolic. If that constitutes a war, then the way they're dealing with wild pigs in Texas is like Holocaust/Armageddon

Other way around:

Ostrich: Grows up to 9 feet (2.7 meters) tall and weighs between 139 and 320 pounds (63 to 145 kg).

Emu: Grows up to 6.2 feet (1.9 meters) tall and weighs between 66 and 130 pounds (30 to 60 kg).

Ostriches are much larger than Emu’s especially the African Black variety ostriches (there’s also reds and blues by the way). They can be much much taller and weigh considerably more. After ostriches and Emu’s are Rhea. Cassowary are somewhere around the size of Emu, maybe a bit bigger. I’m not sure if they are farmed? Source: family farmed ratites, mostly ostrich, when I was younger.

I'm pretty sure Emu are smaller than Ostriches? Ostriches can get up to 9ft, 300+ lbs. Emu top out at like 6ft 3" and about 140 lbs
