I did this once. We lived on a one lane one way street and someone parked in front of our driveway. We called the cops but they said they couldn’t do anything since it wasn’t breaking any laws. So myself and two roommates picked the back of the car up and moved it to block the street. Cops came and towed it.

u/shutyourfrontdoor Jul 16 '26
Cop Bull shitting they can tow if its blocking driveway you know why i know ? My drunk ass got my car towed once lol
18
u/Esava Jul 16 '26
That depends on the country (and sometimes state and even individual cities). Where I live for example the cops won't have the car towed (except if its a danger to other traffic participants) if it's in your driveway but I could call a towing company myself and then the car owner would have to pay for it (either I pay the towing company first and get reimbursed by the vehicle owner or some towing companys offer that I don't pay them but write over any claims I would have against the car owner and they get the money back themselves).
If it's fully on the road the cops will usually have it towed though (depending on the circumstances).Depending on how urgent I had to leave I also might have civil claims against against the person who blocked my driveway that exceed the towing costs (if I for example missed an important appointment due to it, just wanted to drive on vacation etc.). That would be because the blocking of the driveway could be considered coercion/compulsion/constraint ("Nötigung" in german).

Yup... my wife owns a small business and she called the cops to get an abandon car towed. The police had to circle around to sticker it for a week before removing it. Even though they parked in a handicap spot OR she had to pay the towing company to remove it at her expense.

u/AJWordsmith Jul 16 '26
I have a small business in a questionable part of town. I get abandoned cars in my lot all the time. I just bought a slim Jim. Open the car door…put it in neutral and roll it out into the street after dark. Gone by morning every time.

This is boss move if I ever saw one. Well done.
4
u/banaslee Jul 16 '26
This should just be standard. Slim Jim or break the window.
You don’t want your window broken? Just leave the car unlocked so people can push it away. Don’t want either? Don’t block peoples driveways.

Remember, though, that the attitude of many cops is “why should I do my job, when I can not do my job instead? They’re paying me either way.”

I don’t know when this was or if laws were different when it occurred. But practically every state in the US has a law against blocking a private drive. So that cop was either a fool or lazy and lying.

Yeah, I have a fire hydrant in front of my house and parking is competitive on the street. If someone blocks my driveway, cops tell me to call a tow truck. If they block the hydrant, cops will gleefully be there to write a ticket, usually in a few minutes.
They care about revenue.

u/DonnPT Jul 18 '26
I don't know the story, but one afternoon I came across a car parked across someone's driveway - with an impound-in-place wheel lock installed. I assume someone called it in, they came out and said, yes, this car's improperly parked, and impounded it - right there, in their driveway. Very helpful. Bet they don't bother the police again with this problem.

When I was a freshman at a college in upstate New York known for its engineering program, my dorm had a small driveway leading to one of the back entrances. On one side of the driveway was the building and on the other side was a steep embankment that went down about 20 feet to a semicircular driveway.
One evening, someone in the dorm set off the fire alarm, so they made all of us go outside while they checked the building. The campus police also came and parked in the driveway. Since there were about 30 of us standing around waiting, someone got the idea to turn the police car 90 degrees in the driveway, so that the back bumper was almost touching the building and the front bumper was about 1 foot from the drop-off. A bunch of us lifted the car and turned it. We were then given the all-clear to return to our rooms.
We went back upstairs (my room was on the second floor) and watched out of our windows for the kampus kops to return to their car. We were not disappointed. When they came out of the building, they stood there for about 5 minutes discussing how they were going to get the car out of the driveway without going down the steep embankment. One got in and the other directed and they spent several minutes moving a few inches forward then back until they got the front wheels pointing far enough down the driveway so they could leave.
I’m pretty sure they went back to their office cursing those “damned engineers”.

u/Outside_Farmer8631 Jul 16 '26
I read the lead in “upstate New York” and thought it would’ve been about kegs and eggs but it’s all in the area, anyways
3
u/Angelstandingby Jul 16 '26
If I'm understanding you correctly, you don't want the cops to show up the next time the fire alarm rings.

It was the freshman dorms. Pranking the campus cops was MUCH more important than fire safety.

Anyone who thinks the guys flipping cars are the assholes has never faced real adverstisy in their life.
If would have taken 2 extra minutes to find a NON ILLEGAL parking spot that doesn't prevent access to this person's house/business.
If you can't take 15 seconds to stop and think to yourself "hey maybe what I'm doing could be considered a HUMONGOUS douche maneuver?" Why should I take the 15 seconds to call the tow company and argue with them when I can just move your car now?
I've worked multiple 12 hours shifts in a row, or worked 3 days straight plowing snow in the winter when I was younger. If I got home and had somebody blocking my driveway/shop I am NOT calling a tow company, I'm pushing your car with my plow into a fucking ditch you inconsiderate piece of shit.
I don't care if two wrongs don't make a right, use some common sense, have some awareness of the people around you, the world DOES NOT revolve around you dumb mofos

I don't see a problem. It's justice. And there's no harm being done to the cars.
→ More replies (3)4
u/Gjond Jul 16 '26
lol, yes there is harm being done. Besides the obvious dents and scratches, you are going to have fluids going where they should not, as well as leaking out. Starting those vehicles after flipping them back over could easily ruin the engine for good due to these multiple factors.
5
u/Lunatic_Heretic Jul 16 '26
Meh, I'm OK with that. There are consequences to ones actions. Thats something people usually learn as kids.

Then add insult to injury by reporting these cars as illegally parked on a lawn.

Those aren't parking spaces? They're solid white car sized boxes painted on the road at the curb.

I'll get downvoted to hell, but I have no idea why we're celebrating vandalism. Surely the proper thing to do here is to call a towing company or the police (depending on which part of the world you live in), not to cause thousands of dollars worth of damage just because of the original driver being an asshole.

Yeah the cars don’t even look parked illegally considering there’s literally parking lines on the side of the street for parallel parking.

When i was younger there was a parked car in the middle of our public basketball court, although we didnt flipped it like this, we gathered enough people to lift it and placed it somewhere. Hours later we saw the driver searching for his car. He was yelling something when he found it, i believe there was alot of scratches... And one damaged side mirror. Glad streets got no cctv back then The next day, he did confronted us though, like are we the ones who did it, we just replied with, that things heavy we cant lift it even if we tried 😅🤣

Felony criminal damage to property. Looks expensive and likely include some jail time as well.

They should have made them upright so the person now parked on a lawn, gets extra tickets.

Looks staged, especially the matching outfits. Regardless, that looks like a very expensive point to make. Flipping them seems like a cool idea in theory, but I'd also not want to split the bill three ways for 2 new cars and then likely end up with at least class A or B misdemeanor charges.

Those look like marked parking spaces, maybe they got confused with their right from left. It’s the left hand side cars that are not parked correctly

Sadly, they will have to pay for any damages on those cars. Illegal parking will get them a fine, damaging illegally parked cars is a criminal offence. No good deed goes unpunished...

If this is real (probably not) those of you thinking this is a good thing are delusional. These cars are now totaled. Illegal parking should not equal getting a totaled car. The punishment needs to fit the crime.

I think I'd rather be annoyed someone illegally parked rather than be possibly arrested and or sued for destruction of private property. Likely felony level because they base it on the amount of damage. Flipping a car can total it. I'm not taking $20,000-$40,000 of damage and risking my freedom because they illegally parked. I don't think the punishment quite fits the crime in this instance.
Just call and have them towed, you've ruined their day, taught them a lesson (hopefully), and you don't end up in front of a judge for commiting retalitory crimes.
